Diet and microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease: The gut in disharmony

Bacterial colonization of the gut shapes both the local and the systemic immune response and is implicated in the modulation of immunity in both healthy and disease states. Recently, quantitative and qualitative changes in the composition of the gut microbiota have been detected in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, reinforcing the hypothesis of dysbiosis as a relevant mechanism underlying inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) pathogenesis. Humans and microbes have coexisted and co-evolved for a long time in a mutually beneficial symbiotic association essential for maintaining homeostasis. However, the microbiome is dynamic, changing with age and in response to environmental modifications. Among such environmental factors, food and alimentary habits, progressively altered in modern societies, appear to be critical modulators of the microbiota, contributing to or co-participating in dysbiosis. In addition, food constituents such as micronutrients are important regulators of mucosal immunity, with direct or indirect effects on the gut microbiota. Moreover, food constituents have recently been shown to modulate epigenetic mechanisms, which can result in increased risk for the development and progression of IBD. Therefore, it is likely that a better understanding of the role of different food components in intestinal homeostasis and the resident microbiota will be essential for unravelling the complex molecular basis of the epigenetic, genetic and environment interactions underlying IBD pathogenesis as well as for offering dietary interventions with minimal side effects.

Thermo-analytical study on stainless steelmaking dust

Thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to determine the thermal behavior of stainless steelmaking dust and fTIR was used to detect the components of off-gas. The TGA results indicate that three mass loss/gain stages exist in the thermal process. The mass loss of the dust in the first stage results from the evaporation of moisture and the reaction between dissociated carbon and metal oxides in the dust. The evaporation of moisture within the dust happens at 90-350 ℃ and the formation of carbon dioxide happens at 250-470 ℃. The mass gain of the dust in the second stage results from the oxidation of metals in the dust by the oxygen at 470-950 ℃. The third stage is a slow mass loss process, and some metals in the dust are evaporated into the atmosphere in this stage. The evaporation of metals is carried out mainly at 900-1 200 ℃ and the dust is sintered at high temperature over 1 200 ℃.

Steroidal glycoalkaloids（SGAs） are nitrogen-containing secondary metabolites of the Solanum species,which are known to have large chemical and bioactive diversity in *** recent effort and development on LC/MS techniques for SGA profiling have elucidated the main pathways of SGA metabolism in tomato,the problem of peak annotation still remains due to the vast diversity of chemical structure and similar on overlapping of chemical *** we provide a case study of peak classification and annotation approach by integration of species and tissue specificities of SGA accumulation for provision of comprehensive pathways of SGA *** order to elucidate natural diversity of SGA biosynthesis,a total of 169 putative SGAs found in eight tomato accessions（Soianum lycopersicum, ***, ***, ***, ***,***,***,***） and four tissue types were used for correlation *** results obtained in this study contribute annotation and classification of SGAs as well as detecting putative novel biosynthetic branch *** such this represents a novel strategy for peak annotation for plant secondary metabolites.

Trends in the hyperfine interactions of magnetic adatoms on thin insulating layers

Nuclear spins are among the potential candidates prospected for quantum information technology.A recent breakthrough enabled to atomically resolve their interaction with the electron spin,the so-called hyperfine interaction,within individual atoms utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy(STM).Intriguingly,this was only realized for a few species put on a two-layers thick ***,we systematically quantify from first-principles the hyperfine interactions of the whole series of 3d transition adatoms deposited on various thicknesses of MgO,Naf,NaCl,h–BN,and Cu2N *** identify the adatom-substrate complexes with the largest hyperfine interactions and unveil the main trends and *** reveal the core mechanisms at play,such as the interplay of the local bonding geometry and the chemical nature of the thin films,which trigger transitions between high-and low-spin states accompanied with subtle internal rearrangements of the magnetic *** providing a general map of hyperfine interactions,our work has immediate implications in future STM investigations aiming at detecting and realizing quantum concepts hinging on nuclear spins.

Although the high diversity of plant species in the rupestrian fields has been primarily attributed to the existence of a set of distinct habitats, few studies support this assertion. The present study aimed to further investigate the relationship between physical and chemical attributes of soils with the diversity of plant species in this unique ecosystem. The rupestrian field is a unique vegetation formation that covers some of the southeastern Brazilian mountains in the transition of the Atlantic rain forest and the Cerrado(savanna). Different habitats occur according to soil characteristics(e.g., presence of rocks, sand, fertility, hydrology, etc.). These attributes ultimately influence the vegetation that is highly adapted to the harsh edaphic and climatic mountain conditions. five distinct habitats were studied by us: rocky outcrops, peat bogs, sandy bogs, quartz gravel fields, and "cerrado"(savanna). A floristic survey indicated that four families are found at greater frequency: Poaceae, Asteraceae, Cyperaceae, and Leguminosae. The greatest diversity of plant species was found in the rocky outcrops habitat, followed by cerrado, peat bog, quartz gravel grassland, and sandy bogs, respectively. The main difference in the floristic composition among these habitats was related to the dominant species. Trachypogon spicatus(Poaceae) was the most dominant species in the rocky outcrops, Axonopus siccus(Poaceae) in the peat bogs, Lagenocarpus rigidus(Cyperaceae) in the sandy bogs, Schizachyrium tenerum(Poaceae) in the cerrado, while Vellozia sp. 8(Velloziaceae) dominated the vegetation in the quartz gravel grassland. This study demonstrated that physical and chemical soil properties strongly related the diversity of plant species occurring in the different habitats of rupestrian fields.

Acromyrmex ameliae sp. n. （Hymenoptera： formicidae）： A new social parasite of leaf-cutting ants in Brazil

The fungus-growing ants （Tribe Attini） are a New World group of〉 200 species, all obligate symbionts with a fungus they use for food. four attine taxa are known to be social parasites of other attines. Acromyrmex （ Pseudoatta） argentina argentina and Acromyrmex （Pseudoatta） argentina platensis （parasites of Acromyrmex lundi）, and Acromyrmex sp. （a parasite of Acromyrmex rugosus） produce no worker caste. In contrast, the recently discovered Acromyrmex insinuator （a parasite of Acromyrmex echinatior） does produce workers. Here, we describe a new species, Acromyrmex ameliae, a social parasite of Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus and Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus in Minas Gerais, Brasil. Like A. insinuator, it produces workers and appears to be closely related to its hosts. Similar social parasites may be fairly common in the fungus-growing ants, but overlooked due to the close resemblance between parasite and host workers.
