Biodegradable implants are critical for regenerative orthopaedic procedures,but they may suffer from too fast corrosion in human-body *** necessitates the synthesis of a suitable coating that may improve the corrosion resistance of these implants without compromising their mechanical *** this study,an AZ91 magnesium alloy,as a representative for a biodegradable Mg implant material,was modified with a thin reduced graphene oxide(RGO)-calcium carbonate(CaCO_(3))composite *** analytical and in-vitro electrochemical characterization reveals that this coating significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity,and thus has the potential to greatly extend the related application field.

Despite the non-contact underwater explosion phenomena(UNDEX)have been studied for decades and several numerical methods have been proposed in literature,its effects on military structures,especially composite ones,are even nowadays matter of *** early design phases,it is not always possible to verify the shock resistance of hull structures modelling the whole phenomenon,in which fluid,gas and solid properties must be properly set in a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction(fSI)numerical *** ones are extremely complex to set,computationally demanding and certainly not suitable for everyday design *** this paper,a simplified finite element(fE)model,easy to use in an early design phase,is ***,the structure and the fluid are *** this approximation,the fluid behaviour is simplified,using special finite elements,available in a commercial software *** choice reduces the computational time and numerical efforts avoiding the problem of combining computational fluid dynamics(CfD)and fE domains and equations in a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model.A typical parallel body block of a minesweeper is modelled,using two-dimensional multi-layered shell elements to properly account for the composite materials *** the fluid instead,three dimensional volumetric elements,directly coupled to the structural elements,are *** addition,the same calculation is performed,modelling separately fluid in the CfD environment and structures in the finite element ***,realizing a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction *** results obtained by applying both numerical models are compared with the structural response measured on board of a composite ship during a full-scale shock *** simplified proposed procedure provides results in satisfactory agreement with experiments,allowing the validation of the *** are discussed and differences with the real phenomenon and fully coupled CfD+

Dear editor,Vaccines are the most efficient and effective means to prevent infectious diseases,but improving the long-term protective efficacy is still a major challenge in contemporary vaccine development.1 The waning immunity varies depending on the diversification of the pathogen and the number of booster doses.1 Strategies to overcome this warrant is using adjuvants that amplify the immune response,and drive the production of memory B and T cells or long-lived plasma cells that recognize the pathogen for durable protection.2–4 Although existing adjuvants have achieved promising results,research on generating durable protective immunity is lacking in promoting vaccine development and staying ahead of global pandemics such as coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The precisely designed nanoadjuvants can enhance lymph node targeting and increase antigenpresenting cell(APCs)uptake,achieving the co-delivery of adjuvants and antigens and activating innate and adaptive immune responses.5 Previously,we reported a manganese nanoadjuvant(MnARK)and receptor-binding domain(RBD)monomer antigen formulated nanovaccine.6 MnARK transported antigens to lymph nodes,activated the STING pathway,elicited strong neutralizing abilities and increased immune memory T cell percentage against the infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2).6 Regarding the long-term protection potential of MnARK for subunit vaccine development,we further explored the durable immune regulation abilities of MnARK to a SARS-CoV-2 RBD dimer antigen,which has been used in an approved COVID-19 subunit vaccine Zf2001 with aluminum adjuvant(alum).7,8 TEM result revealed that RBD dimer could interact with BSA on MnARK surface and epitope can be well preserved(Supplementary fig.1a).The size and zeta potential of MnARK-RBD dimer nanovaccine was~58 nm and-14 mV,respectively(Supplementary fig.1b,c).

D-transposition of the great arteries(d-TGA)is surgically repaired with the arterial switch operation(ASO)with excellent results,however short and long-term morbidities still develop including neurocognitive *** significant central sleep apnea is uncommon in non-premature infants,but when present indicates immature autonomic control of respiration likely due to a neurologic *** report the unanticipatedfinding of central sleep apnea in four-term neonates with d-TGA after uncomplicated ASO,with the short-term complication of delayed hospital discharge and long-term concerns regarding this early marker of brain immaturity and its hindrance to normal *** this report,we will review each patient’s clinical course and then examine the literature on pediatric central sleep apnea,neurodevelopmental outcomes after ASO,and the important overlap of these entities in the care of patients going forward.

The generation of ultrashort high-power light sources in the mid-infrared(mid-IR)to terahertz(THz)range is of interest for applications in a number of fields,from fundamental research to biology and *** conventional laser technology,photon deceleration in plasma wakes provides an alternative approach to the generation of ultrashort mid-IR or THz ***,we present a photon deceleration scheme for the efficient generation of ultrashort mid-IR or THz pulses by using an intense driver laser pulse with a relatively short wavelength and a signal laser pulse with a relatively long *** signal pulse trails the driver pulse with an appropriate time delay such that it sits at the front of the second wake bubble that is driven by the driver *** to its relatively long wavelength,the signal pulse will be subjected to a large gradient of the refractive index in the plasma wake ***,the photon deceleration in the plasma wake becomes faster and more efficient for signal pulses with longer *** greatly enhances the capacity and efficiency of photon deceleration in the generation of ultrashort high-power light sources in the long-wavelength IR and THz spectral ranges.

Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals,including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy ***,being weak in nature,metal luminescence remains poorly understood,its microscopic origin strongly debated,and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely ***,we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold ***,we present experimental evidence,supported by first-principles simulations,to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin(i.e.,radiative emission from electron/hole recombination)when exciting in the interband *** model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is ***,such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness,associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the fermi *** qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling,thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this *** study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

Learning from imbalanced data is one of the greatest challenging problems in binary classification,and this problem has gained more importance in recent *** the class distribution is imbalanced,classical machine learning algorithms tend to move strongly towards the majority class and disregard the ***,the accuracy may be high,but the model cannot recognize data instances in the minority class to classify them,leading to many *** methods have been proposed in the literature to handle the imbalance problem,but most are complicated and tend to simulate unnecessary *** this paper,we propose a simple oversampling method based on Multivariate Gaussian distribution and K-means clustering,called *** new method aims to avoid generating noise and control imbalances between and within *** experiments have been carried out with six classifiers and four oversampling *** results on different imbalanced datasets show that the proposed GK-Means outperforms other oversampling methods and improves classification performance as measured by f1-score and Accuracy.

Over the past few decades,face recognition has become the most effective biometric technique in recognizing people’s identity,as it is widely used in many areas of our daily ***,it is a challenging technique since facial images vary in rotations,expressions,and *** minimize the impact of these challenges,exploiting information from various feature extraction methods is recommended since one of the most critical tasks in face recognition system is the extraction of facial ***,this paper presents a new approach to face recognition based on the fusion of Gabor-based feature extraction,fast Independent Component Analysis(fastICA),and Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA).In the presented method,first,face images are transformed to grayscale and resized to have a uniform *** that,facial features are extracted from the aligned face image using Gabor,fastICA,and LDA ***,the nearest distance classifier is utilized to recognize the identity of the ***,the performance of six distance classifiers,namely Euclidean,Cosine,Bray-Curtis,Mahalanobis,Correlation,and Manhattan,are *** results revealed that the presented method attains a higher rank-one recognition rate compared to the recent approaches in the literature on four benchmarked face datasets:ORL,GT,fEI,and ***,it showed that the proposed method not only helps in better extracting the features but also in improving the overall efficiency of the facial recognition system.

Water-soluble copolymers of p-methacrylamidobenzoic acid(MABA)with neutral comonomers(N-vinylpyrrolidone(VP),N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide(MVAA),N-methacryloyl glucosamine(MAG))and anionic comononer sodium styrene sulfonate(NaSS)were synthesized by radical *** interactions between the prepared copolymers and Tb^(3+)ions in aqueous solutions were studied;the significant influence of chemical structure of a comonomer on luminescence intensity of Tb^(3+)complexes with the copolymers was *** luminescence intensity of Tb^(3+)complexes with the copolymers containing N-vinylamide units(VP,MVAA)is three times more intense than that observed for the complexes between Tb^(3+)and MAG-containing *** the case of NaSS-containing copolymers,the luminescence intensity is controlled by the values of binding constants between Tb^(3+)and MABA and the content of MABA units in a *** studied copolymers and their complexes with Tb^(3+)have low cytotoxicity and a pronounced antiviral activity against human respiratory syncytial virus.
