Low-Cost Tiled Display System Architecture with Dynamic Web-Based Management

In this paper, a scalable hardware and software architecture for tiled display systems (a.k.a. videowalls), which can be implemented by using low-cost devices, together with a dynamic web-based management and configuration service are proposed. It has been designed to support both stored and live broadcast/broadband content, in mosaic or warp distributions. The displays and devices can be dynamically configured via web in different ways: the displays can create a single display of a larger size;or they can be configured in a customized way in order to playout different media contents in different display combinations. As display renderers, low-cost devices are proposed as the main hardware element to obtain affordable videowall systems. As a proof of concept, two prototypes have been implemented, including an accurate synchronization mechanism based on a Master/Slave control scheme and aggressive and smooth playout adjustment techniques. To evidence the good performance of the prototypes and configuration service, both objective and subjective evaluations have been conducted regarding synchronization accuracy and usability. On the one hand, the mean values of the asynchronies between the video playout processes in each display are kept below 25ms (i.e., frame accuracy). On the other hand, the obtained usability score in the System Usability Scale (SUS) test has been 88.65, which is considered as excellent.

Dynamic risk assessment refers to a risk management framework where frequent updates of risk evaluation information are used to evaluate risk exposure,as close as possible to real-time.In this paper,we present the incident object description exchange format extended model for dynamic risk assessment.This format attempts to overcome the absence of integration and real-time communication between security systems and risk assessment tools.Our model is based on the incident object definition exchange format,which is commonly used in the computer security incident response teams community.This data model aims to facilitate a global vision of information systems risk by supplying real-time security events data to risk assessment tools based on renowned methodologies.We present a proof-of-concept scenario to demonstrate the usefulness of this integration and the proposed data model,and discuss the expected improvements.

Stainless steel is a basic raw material used in many industries.It can be customized by generating laser-induced periodic surface structure(LIPSS)as subwavelength gratings.Here,we present the capabilities of an LIPSS on stainless steel to modify the polarization state of the reflected radiation at the IR band.These structures have been modeled using the finite element method and fabricated by femtosecond laser processing.The Stokes parameters have been obtained experimentally and a model for the shape has been used to fit the simulated Stokes values to the experimental data.The birefringence of the LIPSS is analyzed to explain how they modify the polarization state of the incoming light.We find the geometry of the subwavelength grating that makes it work as an optical retarder that transforms a linearly polarized light into a circularly polarized wave.In addition,the geometrical parameters of the LIPSS are tuned to selectively absorb one of the components of the incoming light,becoming a linear axial polarizer.Appropriately selecting the geometrical parameters and orientation of the fabricated LIPSS makes it possible to obtain an arbitrary pure polarization state when illuminated by a pure linearly polarized state oriented at an azimuth of 45°.The overall reflectance of these transformations reaches values close to 60%with respect to the incident intensity,which is the same reflectivity obtained for non-nanostructured stainless steel flat surfaces.

Bispecific sigma-1 receptor antagonism and mu-opioid receptor partial agonism:WLB-73502,an analgesic with improved efficacy and safety profile compared to strong opioids

Opioids are the most effective painkillers,but their benefit-risk balance often hinder their therapeutic use.WLB-73502 is a dual,bispecific compound that binds sigma-1(S1R)and mu-opioid(MOR)receptors.WLB-73502 is an antagonist at the S1R.It behaved as a partial MOR agonist at the G-protein pathway and produced no/unsignificantβ-arrestin-2 recruitment,thus demonstrating low intrinsic efficacy on MOR at both signalling pathways.Despite its partial MOR agonism,WLB-73502exerted full antinociceptive efficacy,with potency superior to morphine and similar to oxycodone against nociceptive,inflammatory and osteoarthritis pain,and superior to both morphine and oxycodone against neuropathic pain.WLB-73502 crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds brain S1R and MOR to an extent consistent with its antinociceptive effect.Contrary to morphine and oxycodone,tolerance to its antinociceptive effect did not develop after repeated 4-week administration.Also,contrary to opioid comparators,WLB-73502 did not inhibit gastrointestinal transit or respiratory function in rats at doses inducing full efficacy,and it was devoid of proemetic effect(retching and vomiting)in ferrets at potentially effective doses.WLB-73502 benefits from its bivalent S1R antagonist and partial MOR agonist nature to provide an improved antinociceptive and safety profile respect to strong opioid therapy.

AIM: To assess whether the addition of a customized, active immunotherapy to standard of care including fluorescence-guided surgery, may provide hints of an improved survival for patients with poor-prognosis, incurable glioblastoma multiform. METHODS: Preliminary to our ongoing, phase-Ⅱ clinical trial, we conducted a small pilot study enrolling five consecutive patients with resectable glioblastoma. In terms of Recursive Partitioning Analysis, four patientswere class Ⅴ and one was class Ⅳ. In all five cases, fluorescence-guided surgery was employed, followed by rapid steroid discontinuation. Patients were then treated with a combination of standard radio-chemotherapy with temozolomide and tumor lysate-pulsed, mature dendritic cell-based vaccinations.RESULTS: Though all five patients ultimately progressed, with any further treatment left to the sole decision of the treating oncologist, active immunotherapy was very well tolerated and induced specific immune responses in all three patients for whom enough material was available for such an assessment. Median progression-free survival was 16.1 mo. Even more important, median and mean overall survival were 27 mo and 26 mo, respectively. Three patients have died with an overall survival of 9 mo, 27 mo and 27.4 mo, while the other two are still alive at 32 mo and 36 mo, the former receiving treatment with bevacizumab, while the latter has now been off therapy for 12 mo. four of five patients were alive at two years.CONCLUSION: Active immunotherapy with tumor lysate-pulsed, autologous dendritic cells is feasible, safe, well tolerated and biologically efficacious. A phase-Ⅱ study is ongoing to possibly improve further on our very encouraging clinical results.

Background: A number of strategies exist for the implementation of clinical practice guides (CPGs). Aim: To assess the efficacy of implementing a cardiovascular risk CPG based on an educational method involving opinion leaders, and the habitual method of dissemination among primary healthcare teams. Design and Setting: Controlled, blinded, community intervention trial randomised by clusters. Methods: 21 primary healthcare centres were randomly assigned to either the intervention arm (n = 11) or the control arm (n = 10). The study subjects were patients aged ≥45 years assigned to the centres. The overall impact of the intervention was measured as the difference between the increase in the proportion of patients whose medical records showed the recording of all the variables necessary to calculate cardiovascular risk in both arms. Analyses were performed with Generalized Lineal Model on an intention-to-treat basis. Results: 917 subjects were included at the beginning of the trial (437 in the intervention arm and 480 in the control arm). 826 subjects were included in the final evaluation (436 in the intervention group and 390 in the control arm). At the end of the trial, the recording of the variables necessary for the calculation of the cardiovascular risk in the intervention group had increased more than in the control group (difference between increases 7.49% (95% CI 4.62 - 10.35)) after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusions: Compared to the habitual method of dissemination, the implementation of this CPG using an educational method involving opinion leaders, improved the recording of the variables needed to calculate patients’ cardiovascular risk.
