Ballistic response of armour plates using Generative Adversarial Networks

It is important to understand how ballistic materials respond to impact from projectiles such that informed decisions can be made in the design process of protective armour systems. Ballistic testing is a standards-based process where materials are tested to determine whether they meet protection, safety and performance criteria. for the V50ballistic test, projectiles are fired at different velocities to determine a key design parameter known as the ballistic limit velocity(BLV), the velocity above which projectiles perforate the target. These tests, however, are destructive by nature and as such there can be considerable associated costs, especially when studying complex armour materials and systems. This study proposes a unique solution to the problem using a recent class of machine learning system known as the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN). The GAN can be used to generate new ballistic samples as opposed to performing additional destructive experiments. A GAN network architecture is tested and trained on three different ballistic data sets, and their performance is compared. The trained networks were able to successfully produce ballistic curves with an overall RMSE of between 10 and 20 % and predicted the V50BLV in each case with an error of less than 5 %. The results demonstrate that it is possible to train generative networks on a limited number of ballistic samples and use the trained network to generate many new samples representative of the data that it was trained on. The paper spotlights the benefits that generative networks can bring to ballistic applications and provides an alternative to expensive testing during the early stages of the design process.

Aspects of forest restoration and hydrology:linking passive restoration and soil–water recovery in Brazilian Cerrado

Although the scientific knowledge about some associations between physical parameters of the soil is consolidated,studies focused on investigating the dynamics of forest restoration processes and the structure of soils remain *** study area is located in Cerrado and is called as Private Natural Heritage Reserve(RPPN)Águas Perenes forest(perennial water forest)and was selected as a“High Conservation Value forest”,provides scope to investigate the soil physical properties recovery on passive restoration sites,with different ages but with the same land use ***,the aim was to investigate the soil density,moisture,penetration resistance and infiltration rate with long-term from old(fA,46 year-old),medium(fB,11 year-old)and young(fC,8 year-old)passive restoration *** was observed differences in soil density,as well as in soil moisture,resistance to penetration and infiltration *** densities recorded for fA,fB and fC were 1.38,1.48 and 1.53 g cm^(-3),*** recorded higher mean soil moisture(14.9%)than fB(11.5%)and fC(10.0%),whereas mean soil resistance to penetration was increased from fA(0.87 MPa)to fB(0.91 MPa)and fC(1.10 MPa).The average infiltration rate was almost similar in fA and fB(fA=76.43 mm h^(-1);fB=77.48 mm h^(-1))and approximately 39%higher than fC(55.79 mm h^(-1)).Thus,although soil density and moisture were different in each passive restoration site,11 year-old passive restoration site showed similar resistance to penetration and infiltration rate to the old(46 years)passive restoration *** features allowed seeing improvements in hydrological maintenance in the soil and revealed that passive restoration in Cerrado is able to improve the physical features on a soil presenting similar texture,climate and management history.

A RANS-Vof Numerical Model to Analyze the Output Power of An OWC-WEC Equipped with Wells and Impulse Turbines in A Hypothetical Sea-State

Wave energy is a renewable source with significant amount in relation to the global demand. A good concept of a device applied to extract this type of energy is the onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter(OWC-WEC). This study shows a numerical analysis of the diameter determination of two types of turbines, Wells and Impulse, installed in an onshore OWC device subjected to a hypothetical sea state. Commercial software fLUENT?,which is based on RANS-Vof(Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and Volume of fluid technique), is employed. A methodology that imposes air pressure on the chamber, considering the air compressibility effect, is used. The mathematical domain consists of a 10 m deep flume with a 10 m long and 10 m wide OWC chamber at its end(geometry is similar to that of the Pico's plant installed in Azores islands, Portugal). On the top of the chamber, a turbine works with air exhalation and inhalation induced by the water free surface which oscillates due to the incident wave. The hypothetical sea state, represented by a group of regular waves with periods from 6 to 12 s and heights from 1.00 to 2.00 m(each wave with an occurrence frequency), is considered to show the potential of the presented methodology. Maximum efficiency(relation between the average output and incident wave powers) of46% was obtained by using a Wells turbine with the diameter of 2.25 m, whereas the efficiency was 44% by an Impulse turbine with the diameter of 1.70 m.

Mortality Trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases in the State of Sergipe,Brazil,1980-2013

Background:Neglected Tropical Diseases are a set of communicable diseases that affect the population so low socioeconomic status,particularly 1.4 billion people who are living below the poverty *** study has investigated the magnitude and mortality time trends for these diseases in the state of Sergipe,Northeast Region of ***:We conducted an ecological study of time series,based on secondary data derived from the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of *** mortality rates(crude,age-standardized rates and proportional ratio)were calculated from the deaths due to Neglected Tropical Diseases in the state of Sergipe,from 1980 to *** time trends were obtained using the Joinpoint regression ***:Three hundred six thousand and eight hundred seventy-two deaths were certified in the state and Neglected Tropical Diseases were mentioned as the underlying cause in 1,203 certificates(0.39%).Mean number of deaths was 35.38 per year,and crude and age-standardized mortality rates were,respectively:2.16 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.45-2.87)and 2.87 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.93-3.82);the proportional mortality ratio was 0.41%(95%CI:0.27-0.54).In that period,Schistosomiasis caused 654 deaths(54.36%),followed by Chagas disease,with 211(17.54%),and by Leishmaniases,with 142(11.80%)*** other diseases totalized 196 deaths(16.30%).There were increasing mortality trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases,Schistosomiasis and Chagas disease in the last 15 years,according to the age-standardized rates,and stability of the mortality trends for ***:The Neglected Tropical Diseases show increasing trends and are a real public health problem in the state of Sergipe,since they are responsible for significant mortality *** following diseases call attention for showing greater number of deaths in the period of study:Schistosomiasis,Chagas disease and *** finally suggest that public managers take appropri
