Understanding brain structure and function,and the complex relationships bet ween them,is one of the grand challenges of contemporary *** to their fexiblity,optical techniques could be the key to explore this complex *** this manuscript,we briefly review recent adv ancements in optical methods applied to three main issues:anatomy,plasticity and *** describe novel implement ations of light-sheet microscopy to resolve neuronal anat-omy in whole fixed brains with cellular *** to liv ing samples,we show how real-time dynamics of brain rewiring can be visualized through two-photon microscopy with the spatial resolution of single synaptic *** plasticity of the injured brain can also be dissected through cut ting edge optical methods that specifically ablate single neuronal ***,we report how nonlinear microscopy in combination with novel voltage sensitive dyes allow optical registrations of action potential across a population of neurons opening promising prospective in understanding brain *** knowledge acquired from these complementary optical methods may provide a deeper comprehension of the brain and of its unique features.

Cardiovascular diseases in general and atherothrombosis as the most common of its individualdisease entities is the leading cause of death in the developed ***,visualizationand characterization of inner arterial plaque composition is of vital diagnostic interest,especilly for the early recognition of vulnerable *** clinical techniques provide valuablemorphological information but cannot deliver information about the chemicai composition ofindividual ***,spectroscopic imaging techniques have recently drawn consider-able *** on the spectroscopic properties of the individual plaque components,as forinstance diferent types of lipids,the composition of atherosclerotic plaques can be analyzedqualitatively as well as ***,we compare the feasibility of multimodal nonlinearimaging combining,two-photon fluorescence(TPf),coherent anti-stokes Raman scatering(CARs)and second-hamonic generation(sHG)microscopy to contrast composition and mor-phology of lipid deposits against the surrounding matrix of connective tissue with diffractionlimited spatial *** this contribution,the spatial distribution of major constituents of the arterial wall and atherosclerotic plaques like elastin,collagen,triglycerides and cholesterol can be simultaneously visualized by a combination of nonlinear imaging methods,providing a powerful label-free complement to standard histopathological methods with great potential forin vivo application.

BACKGROUND In recent years,minimally invasive liver resection has become a standard of care for liver *** the need to treat increasingly fragile patients,general anesthesia is sometimes avoided due to respiratory ***,surgical treatment with curative intent is abandoned in favor of a less invasive and less radical *** anesthesia has been shown to reduce respiratory complications,especially in elderly patients with pre-existing lung *** sUMMARY A 77-year-old man with hepatitis-C-virus-related chronic liver disease underwent robotic liver resection for hepatocellular *** patient was suffering from hypertension,diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary *** National surgical Quality Improvement Program score for developing pneumonia was 9.2%.We planned a combined spinal–epidural anesthesia with conscious sedation to avoid general *** modification of the standard surgical technique was *** were stable and bleeding was *** postoperative course was *** Robotic surgery in locoregional anesthesia with conscious sedation could be considered a safe and suitable approach in specialized centers and in selected patients.
