Application of a new reagent for analysis of oxygen presence in a lowcarbon steel wire rod

A microstructural analysis was performed to determine the presence of oxygen in a wire rod section of AISI 1008 steel with a surface mechanical failure produced during wire drawing.The failure zone was analyzed by comparison using three different attack reagents:alkaline sodium chromate(ASC),ASC with hydrogen peroxide and amyl alcohol,and a solution of nitric acid in ethyl alcohol.The reagents were applied in samples in the failure zone,showing different types of zones in regions with internal and superficial defects such as carbides,pores,cracks,deformation,and detachment zones,indicating the possible presence of oxygen.The areas identified were observed by means of an optical microscope and were correlated with the content of elements that were present in the region using a scanning electron microscope and a scattered X-ray energy spectrometer,which determined that the areas identified by chromate sodium correspond to regions with a high concentration of oxygen and slag-forming elements such as silicon,aluminum,and iron;this is associated with the presence of oxygen in the oxide form.It was also observed that the ASC and the modified ASC solution with hydrogen peroxide and amyl alcohol could identify areas with a high presence of oxides,while the nitric acid solution only identified the steel microstructure.The modified ASC solution is an alternative to identify the presence of chemical variants of oxygen because the conventional formulation is unstable and has a too short shelf life,and therefore,its application must be carried out at the time of preparation.

Hydrological Processes in a Small Research Watershed under forest Coverage in the Coast of Chiapas, Mexico

In the hydrological watershed, some natural processes take place in which the interaction of water, soil, climate and vegetation favors the capture of water. The present study aimed to evaluate preliminary information regarding the hydrological response and the water balance in a small research watershed with tropical forest cover (15°01'44''n and 92°13'55''W, 471 m, 2.3 has). Events of precipitation, direct runoff, infiltration rate and baseflow were performed. The amount, duration and intensity of rainfall events were recorded with the use of a pluviograph. Surface runoff was quantified with an established gauging station, an H-type gauging device and a horizontal mechanical gauging limnograph. Runoff base flow was measured at the gauging station using the volume-time method. Infiltration was measured using a triple ring infiltrometer, taking two measurements in the upper part and two in the lower part of the microbasin. Evapotranspiration was measured with the amount of rainfall entering and runoff leaving the watershed. In the study period, annual rainfall of 4417.6 mm distributed over 181 events were recorded;about 70% of the storms showed lower intensities at 20 mm·h-1. The total runoff was 345.8 mm caused by half of the rainfall events, which represents 7.8% of the total rain;77% of runoff events showed lower sheets of 5 mm and an average specific rate of 20.7 L·s-1·ha-1 with a maximum of 113.6 L·s-1·ha-1. Three runoff events were greater than 20.1 mm and caused the 22.5% of the total runoff depth in the study period showing the equilibrium conditions in the hydrological response of the forest. Water outputs like baseflow was 669.5 mm. In this way, 90% of the rainfall is infiltrated every year in the micro-watershed, which shows the importance of the plant cover in the hydrological regulation and the groundwater recharge.

Detection of Antinuclear Antibodies in Canine Serum by Immunoperoxidase in MDCK and Indirect Immunofluorescence in HEp2 Cells

Antinuclear antibodies are found in animals suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and some other diseases, their presence in the blood is determined by antinuclear antibody (AnA) test using indirect immunofluorescence (If) with HEp2 cells as a substrate. In this work, an immunoperoxidase (IP) assay was developed to evaluate the AnAs in canine sera, using canine kidney cell lines (MDCK) and compared with a commercial immunofluorescence test on Hep2 cells for this system, a fluoresceinated anti-canine Ig antibody was standardized. The study was performed on 50 sera from dogs submitted to the laboratory with different clinical diagnoses of autoimmune-associated diseases. The procedures on both cells were unified to perform comparisons of the reactions, direct sera or at different dilutions were added to a monolayer of permeabilized MDCK cells, followed by a peroxidized anti-canine IgG conjugate, and a substrate for the IP reaction. The same sera were tested on the commercial If assay on Hep2 cell system. In 22/50 cases, the presence of LE cells in peripheral blood was determined. A high correlation was found in the detection of antinuclear antibodies between both cell lines and techniques, however there were differences in the reaction patterns in the nucleus and cytoplasm between cell lines. The diffuse nuclear pattern observed in MDCK cells was more related to the presence of high percentages of LE cells in peripheral blood. The differences found in the results were possibly associated with the presence of homologous antigens between the MDCK cells and the dog. In addition, the methodology and standardization for the use and interpretation of a reference serum was developed to unify the interpretation criteria in the laboratory.

Effect of Cardioxane and Selenium on Lipoperoxidation and Levels of Dopamine in Rat Brain and Heart

Background: Cardioxane has been probed in patients with advanced malignancies to protect the heart. Selenium, an essential micronutrient exerts varieties of functions such as antioxidant. The aim of this study was to test if cardioxane (CDX) and selenium (Se) have additive antioxidant protective effect on brain and heart, and their relation with dopamine levels. Methods: Thirty-six male Wistar rats divided in groups of 6 animals each, were treated as follows: G1, saline solution 0.9% (control);G2, 100 mg/kg of CDX;G3, 60 μg/kg of Se;G4, 20 mg/kg of 3-nitropropionic acid (3nP);G5, 3nP + CDX and G6, 3nP + Se. 3nP was used as an oxidative stress inducer. Drugs were administered intraperitoneally for 5 days. The animals were sacrificed on the last day of treatment and the brain and heart were extracted and used to measure lipid peroxidation, dopamine, glutathione (GSH), ATPase, calcium, and H2O2. Results: In G2 and G5, dopamine decreased in cortex and striatum while GSH increased in heart, cortex and cerebellum/medulla oblongata. ATPase activity increased in heart and cortex of groups 2, 3, 5 and 6. Lipoperoxidation and H2O2 increased in cortex of animals treated with 3nP. Conclusion: These results suggest that CDX increases antioxidant capacity in the brain and heart while selenium promotes alteration in dopamine metabolism in view of the capacity of 3nP to generate free radicals.

Introduction: Degeneration of the cervical spine (CDSD) prevalence is nearly 90% by the 7th decade. This is the first research that compares the outcomes between the Anterior Approach (AA) and Posterior Approach (PA) to cervical myelopathy (CM) in the elderly. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational study of electronic health records at the Hospital Central Sur de Alta Especialidad (HCSAE), PEMEX from January 2010 to May 2020 with patients older than 60 years submitted to cervical surgery. For the analysis we elaborated two groups according to the surgical approach: AA vs PA;we analyzed the trans-operative behavior, the immediate outcome, and after 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Results: n>As a total of 145 patients, the prevalence of CM in elderly was the 63.8% with a median age of 69 (64 - 75) years. We found statistical differences in strength outcome only in the P3m (p = 0.011), for sensitivity we found major prevalence of affection in the PA group. In this work, a modification of the sugarcane bagasse is performed, in order to obtain organic catalysts. The bagasse analysis is performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (fTIR), which indicated that characteristic peaks determined its chemical compounds. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is used to know the morphology. finally, a discoloration test is conducted on an azo compound (methylene blue) in an aqueous medium, obtaining an efficiency of 98.6%.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components.Dendritic cells(DCs)play a key role in the defense against viral infections,for instance plasmacytoid DCs(pDCs),have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha(Ifn-α).In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and Ifn-αproduction,which has been associated with disease severity.In this work,we described that in addition to the DC deficiency,several DC activation and homing markers were altered in acute COVID-19 patients,which were associated with multiple inflammatory markers.Remarkably,previously hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients remained with decreased numbers of CD1c+myeloid DCs and pDCs seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection.Moreover,the expression of DC markers such as CD86 and CD4 were only restored in previously nonhospitalized patients,while no restoration of integrinβ7 and indoleamine 2,3-dyoxigenase(IDO)levels were observed.These findings contribute to a better understanding of the immunological sequelae of COVID-19.
