The role of soil-borne fungi in driving the coexistence of Pinus massoniana and Lithocarpus glaber in a subtropical forest via plant-soil feedback

Aims Plant–soil feedback(PSf)is a key mechanism that can facilitate tree species coexistence and *** evidence suggests that species-specific soil-borne pathogens around adult trees limit the performance of home(conspecific)seedlings relative to foreign(heterospecific)***,the underlying mechanism remains largely *** Here,we conducted a reciprocal transplant pot experiment using seedlings and from two tree species,Pinus massoniana and Lithocarpus glaber that are dominant and coexist in a subtropical,evergreen,broad-leaf.forest in Gutianshan,Zhejiang Province of eastern *** examined how seedlings from the two tree species responded to soils originating from underneath their own versus the other tree species,using a full-factorial ***,we added a fungicide(benomyl)to half of the pots to evaluate the role of soil-borne fungi on seedling *** findings We found that the seedlings from *** grew better in soils that were collected from beneath the canopy of ***,while seedling growth of *** was not affected by soil *** addition of.fungicide benomyl resulted in a shift towards more positive PSf effects for ***,indicating that *** seedlings performed better in their own soils than in soils from *** in the absence of *** findings highlight the importance of soil-borne pathogenic and ectomycorrhizal fungi in driving PSf,and indicate that PSf may promote the coexistence of two subtropical tree species by reducing the performance of *** in own soils.

A Re-containing Ni-base single crystal superalloy was used to investigate the elementary processes associated with stress-rupture behavior at different temperatures where theγʹrafting *** 900°C,the rupture behavior is mainly determined by the multiplication of dislocations within the wideningγchannels,which is closely linked with the propagation of microcracks along the inherentγ/γʹ*** rapid formation of lamellaγ/γʹraft structure,along with the developed-well interfacial dislocation networks,and its elastic instability are primarily responsible for the rupture behavior at 1100°*** is a clear curvature tendency in the Larson-Miller plot of stress-rupture lifetime in relation to stress at high *** indicates that the influence extent ofγʹrafting on stress-rupture behavior is sensitive to the acting conditions of temperature and stress.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Immunological Properties of LPS-Based Vaccines Composed of O-Polysaccharides Conjugated with Recombinant Exoprotein A from Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains one of the major pathogens affecting immunocompromised patients. LPS-based monovalent (MV) and polyvalent (PV) conjugate vaccines were prepared from the most prevalent strains of P. aeruginosa International Antigenic Typing Scheme (IATS) 6, 10, 11 and 20 to evaluate their immunogenicity and protective capacities from infection by the pathogens. Conjugation of the O-polysaccharide (O-PS) antigens of P. aeruginosa strains to the common immunogenic recombinant Exotoxin A (rEPA) supports the multi-antigenic approach for the development of a vaccine that provides cross protection against various strains of the pathogen. The O-PSs were indirectly conjugated through adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) to rEPA by carbodiimidemediated condensation reaction. Mice were immunized with the conjugates emulsified with monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) or freund's adjuvant compared with conjugates without adjuvant, unconjugated mixture of rEPA and O-PS emulsified with MPL, and sterile saline. The MV and PV vaccines emulsified with MPL adjuvant elicited the highest anti-O-PS IgM and IgG antibodies. Immunization of mice with MV vaccines derived from IATS 10, 11, and 20, emulsified with MPL adjuvant provided a high level of protection against the homologous bacterial strain. Similarly, high protection was obtained when mice were immunized using PV and challenged separately with bacterial strains 10, 11, and 20, but lower protection against the IATS 6 strain. Also, high cross protection of MV vaccine derived from O-PS of IATS 10 and 20 was obtained against P. aeruginosa IATS 11 strain. The in vivo protection correlated with the level of anti-O-PS IgG in the mice serum.

As promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries,metal sulfides ubiquitously suffer from low-rate and high-plateau issues,greatly hindering their application in ***,exemplifying carbon nanotubes(CNTs)-stringed metal sulfides superstructure(CSC)assembled by nano-dispersed SnS_(2) and CoS_(2) phases,cocktail mediation effect similar to that of high-entropy materials is initially studied in ether-based electrolyte to solve the *** high nano-dispersity of metal sulfides in CSC anode underlies the cocktail-like mediation effect,enabling the circumvention of intrinsic drawbacks of different metal *** utilizing ether-based electrolyte,the reversibility of metal sulfides is greatly improved,sustaining a long-life effectivity of cocktail-like *** such,CSC effectively overcomes low-rate flaw of SnS_(2) and highplateau demerit of CoS_(2),simultaneously realizes a high rate and a low *** half-cells,CSC delivers an ultrahigh-rate capability of 327.6 mAh g^(−1) anode at 20 A g^(−1),far outperforming those of monometallic sulfides(SnS_(2),CoS_(2))and their *** with CoS_(2) phase and SnS_(2)/CoS_(2) mixture,CSC shows remarkably lowered average charge voltage up to ca.0.62 ***-assembled CSC//Na1.5VPO4.8f0.7 full-cell shows a good rate capability(0.05~1.0 A g^(−1),120.3 mAh g^(−1) electrode at 0.05 A g^(−1))and a high average discharge voltage up to 2.57 V,comparable to full-cells with alloy-type *** analysis verifies that the cocktail-like mediation effect largely boosts the charge transfer and ionic diffusion in CSC,compared with single phase and mixed *** mechanism study reveals that alternative and complementary electrochemical processes between nano-dispersed SnS_(2) and CoS_(2) phases are responsible for the lowered charge voltage of *** electrolyte/structure-dependent cocktail-like mediation effect effectively enhances the practicability of metal sulfide anodes,which will boost the developm

Solution of transient heat conduction by the Monte Carlo method is presented for anisotropic media. Although the utility of the Monte Carlo method in radiation heat transfer has been well established, not as much attention is given to its use in the conduction heat transfer problems [1]. This is despite the fact that the use of the Monte Carlo method has shown to be very convenient for computer programming multi-dimensional bodies with complicated geometries and to have this very attractive feature that the solution at a specific point may be obtained without the need for solving the whole domain [1]. This latter feature of the Monte Carlo method is of great value in inverse heat conduction problems [2]. Monte Carlo method is a perfect for parallel computations as processors do not need to communicate until the random walk steps are complete. Recently Deng and Liu [3] utilized the Monte Carlo method in bio-heat transfer applications. The use of the Monte Carlo method for solving the steady heat conduction problem in an anisotropic medium was addressed by Kowsary and Arabi [4]. However, its use for solving the unsteady heat conduction problems in anisotropic media has not yet been discussed. The present paper addresses this issue. The probability coefficients derived from finite differencing of transient heat conduction equation are presented and are used subsequently in a fixed-step random walk procedure. Results for a test case having Robin and adiabatic boundary condition types are presented and validated against results of the existing numerical methods.
