The induction generator ef.ect(IGE)and the openloop modal proximity(OLMP)are two dif.erent reasons why subsynchronous oscillations(SSOs)in a series-compensated power system(SCPS)may occur.The IGE attributes the growing SSOs to negative resistance,while the OLMP explains the SSO mechanism f.om the standpoint of.modal conditions.In this paper,we investigate the connections between the IGE and the OLMP through equivalent RLC circuit and open-loop modal analysis.Our investigation is conducted f.r two types of.seriescompensated power systems where either a synchronous generator or a Df.G is connected at the sending end.The investigation reveals the conditions,in which the IGE and the OLMP may jointly cause the growing SSOs,i.e.,both the IGE and the OLMP can explain why the growing SSOs occur.f.rthermore,the investigation indicates that the IGE and the OLMP may be totally irrelevant and lead to growing SSOs separately.This implies that it is possible that in a SCPS,the growing SSOs are only due to the IGE,and the OLMP is non-existent,and vice versa.Hence,when the growing SSOs occurs in a SCPS,examination based on both the IGE and the OLMP should be caref.lly conducted in order to f.nd if.the oscillatory instability is due to the IGE,or the OLMP,or both of.them.

Objective:To share a single institutional experience with clinical research on COVID-related olf.ctory dysf.nction(OD).Data Source/Method:Narrative review of.published original data and ongoing clinical trials on COVID-related OD at Washington University f.om 2020 to 2023.Results:There were three new diagnostic-/patient-reported outcome measures developed and tested.We report f.ve clinical trials of.interventions f.r COVID-related olf.ctory disorders:combined Visual-Olf.ctory Training(VOLT)with patient-pref.rred scents versus standard olf.ctory training(VOLT trial),oral gabapentin versus placebo(Gabapentin f.r the Relief.of.Acquired Chemosensory Experience trial),nasal theophylline irrigations versus placebo(Smell Changes and Ef.icacy of.Nasal Theophylline trial),stellate ganglion block(single-arm),and mindf.lness-based stress reduction(MBSR)versus lif.style intervention(MBSR trial).Conclusions:Initial intervention trials f.r COVID-related OD have shown potential f.r improving subjective and objective olf.ctory outcomes.However,there remains no gold standard treatment that def.nitively outperf.rms placebo in controlled trials.Theref.re,continued investigation of.novel therapeutic strategies f.r COVID-related OD is necessary to maximize olf.ctory outcomes f.r af.ected patients.

The hexaploid sweetpotato(lpomoea batatas)is one of.the most important root crops worldwide.However,its genetic origin remains controversial,and its domestication history remains unknown.In this study,we used a range of.genetic evidence and a newly developed haplotype-based phylogenetic analysis to identif. two probable progenitors of.sweetpotato.The diploid progenitor was likely closely related to lpomoea ae-quatoriensis and contributed the B,subgenome,IbT-DNA2,and the lineage 1 type of.chloroplast genome to sweetpotato.The tetraploid progenitor of.sweetpotato was most likely l.batatas 4x,which donated the B2 subgenome,IbT-DNA1,and the lineage 2 type of.chloroplast genome.Sweetpotato most likely originated f.om reciprocal crosses between the diploid and tetraploid progenitors,f.llowed by a subsequent whole-genome duplication.In addition,we detected biased gene exchanges between the subgenomes;the rate of.B,to B2 subgenome conversions was nearly three times higher than that of.B2 to B subgenome conver-sions.Our analyses revealed that genes involved in storage root f.rmation,maintenance of.genome stabil-ity,biotic resistance,sugar transport,and potassium uptake were selected during the speciation and domestication of.sweetpotato.This study sheds light on the evolution of.sweetpotato and paves the way f.rimprovementof.hiscrop.

Durable and enhanced immunity against SARS-CoV-2 elicited by manganese nanoadjuvant f.rmulated subunit vaccine

Objective: The aim of.the work described here was to evaluate the role of.contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in response evaluation f.r unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) plus anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) antibody therapy. Methods: A prospective cohort of.consecutive patients with HCC who received combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody treatment f.r unresectable HCC between January 2022 and October 2022 was included in this study. The patients underwent unenhanced ultrasound (US) and CEUS examinations bef.re treatment and at f.llow-up. Changes in the largest diameters of.the target tumor on unenhanced US and the largest diameters of.the enhancing target tumors on CEUS were evaluated. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 with unenhanced US and magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography (MRI/CT) and modif.ed RECIST (mRECIST) with CEUS and CEMRI/CT were used to assess treatment response. Results: A total of.24 HCC patients (23 men and 1 woman; mean age: 56.5 ± 8.5 y; Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage C, 62.5%; 29 intrahepatic target tumors) were studied. Calculations of.degree of.necrosis in the target tumors revealed no signif.cant dif.erences between CEUS and CEMRI/CT (44.5 ± 36.2% vs. 45.3 ± 36.8%, p = 0.862). As f.r the dif.erentiation of.responders f.om non-responders, the agreement between RECIST version 1.1 of.unenhanced US and mRECIST-CEUS was poor (κ coef.icient = 0.233). Meanwhile, there was a high degree of.concordance between mRECIST-CEUS and mRECIST-CEMRI/CT (κ coef.icient = 0.812). Conclusion: CEUS proved to be superior to baseline US and is comparable to CEMRI/CT in def.ning treatment outcome f.r combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. © 2023 World f.deration f.r Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

Dear editor,Vaccines are the most ef.icient and ef.ective means to prevent inf.ctious diseases,but improving the long-term protective ef.icacy is still a major challenge in contemporary vaccine development.1 The waning immunity varies depending on the diversif.cation of.the pathogen and the number of.booster doses.1 Strategies to overcome this warrant is using adjuvants that amplif. the immune response,and drive the production of.memory B and T cells or long-lived plasma cells that recognize the pathogen f.r durable protection.2–4 Although existing adjuvants have achieved promising results,research on generating durable protective immunity is lacking in promoting vaccine development and staying ahead of.global pandemics such as coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The precisely designed nanoadjuvants can enhance lymph node targeting and increase antigenpresenting cell(APCs)uptake,achieving the co-delivery of.adjuvants and antigens and activating innate and adaptive immune responses.5 Previously,we reported a manganese nanoadjuvant(MnARK)and receptor-binding domain(RBD)monomer antigen f.rmulated nanovaccine.6 MnARK transported antigens to lymph nodes,activated the STING pathway,elicited strong neutralizing abilities and increased immune memory T cell percentage against the inf.ction of.severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2).6 Regarding the long-term protection potential of.MnARK f.r subunit vaccine development,we f.rther explored the durable immune regulation abilities of.MnARK to a SARS-CoV-2 RBD dimer antigen,which has been used in an approved COVID-19 subunit vaccine Zf.001 with aluminum adjuvant(alum).7,8 TEM result revealed that RBD dimer could interact with BSA on MnARK surf.ce and epitope can be well preserved(Supplementary f.g.1a).The size and zeta potential of.MnARK-RBD dimer nanovaccine was~58 nm and-14 mV,respectively(Supplementary f.g.1b,c).

The tree ring has been regarded as an emerging archive to reconstruct historical atmospheric mercury(Hg)trends,but with the large knowledge gaps in the reliability.In this study,we comprehensively evaluated the Hg source,radial translocation and age ef.ect of.Masson pine(Pinus massoniana)tree ring at Mt.Jinyun in Chongqing,to assess the suitability of.such tree ring as the archive of.atmospheric Hg.Results showed that distinct variabilities among Masson pine tree-ring Hg concentration prof.les.The Hg concentration signif.cantly increased along with stem height(Pf.om f.liage uptake atmospheric Hg.We f.und a distinct age ef.ect that the tree ring of.young trees had the higher Hg concentration.Besides,we used the advection-dif.usion model to demonstrate how Hg concentration shif.ed by the advection or/and dif.usion in tree rings.The modeling results showed that the advection induced radial translocation during the young growth period of.tree was a plausible mechanism to result in the tree-ring Hg record largely dif.erent f.om the trend of.anthropogenic Hg emissions in Chongqing.We f.nally suggest that in f.rther Hg dendrochemistry,better discarding the tree-ring Hg prof.le of.the young growth period to reduce impacts of.the radial translocation and age ef.ect.

In natural and artif.cial systems,reversible reactions are commonly asymmetric with respect to the time scale and nature of.the stimuli which drive the f.rward and backward processes.In applications f.r which switching behavior is required,it is desirable that the reversible reaction goes as close to symmetric as possible;however,such systems are uncommon.Herein,we report an example of.ultraviolet(UV)-visible light-regulated asymmetric reversible structural switching involving a diene-based coordination polymer,CP1 and its monocyclobutane product,CP1a.It is possible to cycle at least ten times through a f.rward [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction and the reverse,photocleavage reaction.A single cycle can be completed within a f.w minutes.The transf.rmation is accompanied by f.st and distinct f.uorescence changes,arising f.om optimisation of.the reaction conditions.Density f.nctional theory calculations allow rationalisation of.the asymmetric reversible transf.rmation between CP1 and CP1a rather than between CP1 and its dicyclobutane product CP1b.This work provides a clear illustration of.reversible structural switching which approaches symmetric behaviour with respect to reaction rate and stimuli.The insights gained f.om this work also assist in the design of.f.st,reversible switching materials.

Anammox is widely considered as the most cost-ef.ective and sustainable process f.r nitrogen removal.However,how to achieve the enrichment of.anammox biomass remains a challenge f.r its large-scale application,especially in mainstream wastewater treatment.In this study,the f.asibility of.enrichment of.anammox biomass was explored through the realization of.partial denitrif.cation and the addition of.bio-carriers.By using ordinary activated sludge,a sequencing batch reactor(SBR)f.llowed by an up-f.w anaerobic sludge bed(UASB)was operated at 25±2℃ f.r 214 days.The long-term operation was divided into f.ve phases,in which SBR and UASB were started-up in Phases I and II,respectively.By eliminating oxygen and adjusting the inf.w ratios in Phases III-V,advanced nitrogen removal was achieved with the ef.uent total nitrogen being 4.7 mg/L and the nitrogen removal ef.iciency being 90.5%in Phase V.Both in-situ and ex-situ activity tests demonstrated the occurrence of.partial denitrif.cation and anammox.Moreover,16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Candidatus Brocadia was enriched f.om below the detection limit to in biof.lms(0.4%in SBR,2.2%in UASB)and the f.c sludge(0.2%in SBR,1.3%in UASB),while Thauera was mainly detected in the f.c sludge(8.1%in SBR,8.8%in UASB),which might play a key role in partial denitrif.cation.Overall,this study provides a novel strategy to enrich anammox biomass driven by rapid achievement of.partial denitrif.cation through the addition of.bio-carriers,which will improve large-scale application of.anammox processes in mainstream wastewater treatment.

Water f.uoride pollution has caused non-negligible harm to the environment and humans,and thus it is crucial to f.nd a suitable treatment technology.In this study,La-f.@PTA adsorbent was synthesized f.r the def.uoridation of.mine water.The results showed that the optimum conditions f.r def.uoridation by La-f.@PTA were p H close to 7.0,the initial f.concentration of.10 mg/L,the dosage of.0.5 g/L and the adsorption time of.240 min.Compared with SO_4^(2-),Cl^(-),NO_(3)^(-),Ca^(2+)and Mg^(2+),CO_(3)^(2-)and HCO_(3)^(-)presented severer inhibition on f.uoride uptake by La-f.@PTA.The adsorption process f.ts well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and f.eundlich model,and the maximum adsorption capacity of.Langmuir model was 95 mg/g.f.xed-bed adsorption results indicated that f.uoride in practical f.uorinated mine water could be ef.ectively removed f.om 3.6 mg/L to less than 1.5 mg/L within130 bed volume(BV)by using 1.5 g La-f.@PTA.f.rthermore,the adsorbent still had good adsorption capacity af.er regeneration,which conf.rms the great application potential of.La-f.@PTA as a f.uoride ion adsorbent.The mechanism analysis showed that La-f.@PTA adsorption of.f.uorine ions is a physicochemical reaction driven by electrostatic attraction and ion exchange.
