f.nctionalization of.AuMSS nanorods towards more ef.ective cancer therapies

The applicatio n of.nano particles as selective drug delivery platf.rms arises as one the most promising therapeutic strategies in the biomedical f.eld. Such systems can encapsulate drugs, prevent its premature degradation, transport and promote the drugs specif.c delivery to the target site. Among the dif.erent nanostructures, gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods have been one of.the most explored due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The mesoporous silica biocompatibility, high surf.ce area that can be easily f.nctionalized, tubular pores that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic capacity of.gold nanorod to absorb near-inf.ared radiation, allows the combination of.hyperthermia (i.e., photothermal ef.ect) with drug delivery, making them a nanoplatf.rms with a huge potential f.r cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the successf.l applicati on of.AuMSS nanoparticles as an ef.ective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of.the therapeutic payloads, limited blood circulation time and unf.vorable pharmacokinetics. In this review, an overview of.the modif.cati ons perf.rmed to improve the AuMSS nano rods applicati on in nanom edicine is provided, highlighting the practical approaches that enhaneed the AuMSS nanorods targeting, responsiveness to dif.erent stimuli, and blood circulation time. f.rther, the basics of.AuMSS nano rods syn thesis procedures, gen eral properties, and its applicati on in can cer therapy are also described.

Use of.legume trees can improve soil quality in degraded pastures. The aim of.this study was to charac- terize C and N mineralization kinetics and estimate the potentially mineralizable C and N in soil under Mimosa caesalpiniif.lia Benth. and Acacia auriculif.rmis A. Cunn. ex Benth. secondary f.rest and pasture in red-yellow latosols in southeast Brazil. We conducted a laboratory aerobic incubation experiment using a completely ran- domized design of.f.ur replicates and f.ur types of.plant cover using a modif.ed version of.the Stanf.rd and Smith technique （1972） to study C and N mineralization potential. Potentially mineralizable N （No） ranged f.om 135 to 170 mg kg-1. The predominant f.rm of.mineral N f.r all types of.plant cover was N-NO3-. M. caesalpiniif.lia was the only species that had a positive inf.uence on N min- eralization. Neither of.the legumes inf.uenced C mineral- ization in pasture or secondary f.rest. The model of.N mineralization corresponded to a sigmoidal curve while C mineralization corresponded to an exponential curve, revealing that the N and C mineralization processes were distinct. N mineralized by M. caesalpiniif.lia （216 kg of. ha-1） was adequate to meet the N requirement f.r a livestock-f.rest system.

Numerical Uncertainty and Its Implications

A scrutiny of.the contributions of.key mathematicians and scientists shows that there has been much controversy (throughout the development of.mathematics and science) concerning the use of.mathematics and the nature of.mathematics too. In this work, we try to show that arithmetical operations of.approximation lead to the existence of.a numerical uncertainty, which is quantic, path dependent and also dependent on the number system used, with mathematical and physical implications. When we explore the algebraic equations f.r the f.ne structure constant, the conditions exposed in this work generate paradoxical physical conditions, where the solution to the paradox may be in the f.ct that the f.ne-structure constant is calculated through dif.erent ways in order to obtain the same value, but there is no relationship between the f.ndamental physical processes which underlie the calculations, since we are merely dealing with algebraic relations, despite the expressions having the same physical dimensions.

f.;"> Introduction: Breast ductal carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) can be def.ned as a malignant epithelial prolif.ration with growth limited by the basal membrane of.the ductal epithelium, with no evidence of.stromal invasion. There has been a trend of.trying to subcategorize DCIS based on cell prolif.ration assays (Ki67) and the expression of.hormone receptors and the human epidermal growth receptor (HER-2) as detected by immunohistochemistry, similar to invasive breast carcinomas (IBC). The aims were to evaluate the expression of.breast cancer marker proteins in DCIS by immunohistochemistry to better categorize it. Methods: 46 biopsies f.om women with DCIS and IBC Luminal A-like were evaluated by immunohistochemistry staining of.proteins already known to be biomarkers in IBC. f.r controls, normal breast tissue f.om mammoplasty (n = 3) was used. Results: Our results showed an increase of.estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expression relative to that in normal tissue samples (p f.erences in steroid hormone expression patterns were seen between DCIS and IBC tumors (p = 0.3145;p = 0.7341, respectively). The prolif.ration levels of.the DCIS and IBC samples were similar as evaluated by the Ki67 labeling index. Only 12.90% of.samples showed amplif.cation of.HER-2. Conclusion: The biology of.DCIS is not well understood given the complexity and heterogeneity of.the disease, which makes it important to better sub-categorize this tumor, especially considering the possibility of.identif.ing DCIS cases with the potential f.r recurrence and evolution into IBC.

f.ngus-growing termites cultivate species of.the mutualistic basidiomycete genus Termitomyces on a substrate called the f.ngal comb. Identif.cation of.f.ngal species based on morphological f.atures is complicated, tedious, and prone to errors. As an alternative, nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences consisting of.the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S rDNA were used to identif. Malaysian isolates of.Termitomyces sp. The morphological characteristics and molecular data indicate that Malaysian Termitomyces isolated is clearly monophyletic and belongs to the Tricholomataceae f.mily. The Malaysian isolates analyzed in this study represent the termite f.ngus species called T. aurantiacus.

Thermomechanical Behavior and Corrosion Resistance of.a 316 L Austenitic Stainless Steel

Hot-f.rmed components are constantly exposed to hostile environments with corrosive substances. Microstructural changes caused by thermomechanical processing can be predicted to increase the corrosion resistance of.austenitic stainless steels. The objective of.this study is to understand the relationship between the dynamic sof.ening mechanisms and corrosion resistance, thus optimizing the hot-f.rming process. In the current work, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of.AISI 316 L austenitic stainless steel was studied in the temperature range of.1273 - 1423 K and strain-rate range of.0.1 - 5.0 s-1 using physical simulation. Subsequently, potentiodynamic polarization tests and scanning electron microscopy were perf.rmed on the hot-def.rmed samples to investigate the inf.uence of.temperature and strain-rate on the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The results indicated that the DRX f.actions increased under low-temperature and high strain-rate conditions, resulting in grain ref.nement. The potentiodynamic polarization tests indicated that the dynamically recovered samples demonstrated high resistance to corrosion compared with the DRX samples. The best route f.und f.r the investigated alloy was f.r the strain to be applied at a temperature of.1423 K and a strain rate of.0.1 s-1.

Does Linear Canopy Openings in a Lowland Atlantic Tropical f.rest Cause Edge Ef.ects on Seedling Communities?

Edge ef.ects and linear canopy openings may change ecological patterns and processes on f.rests. Here we investigate if.these openings in a lowland Brazilian Atlantic f.rest cause edge ef.ects on seedlings. We sampled seedling communities at f.rest edges near to two linear canopy openings (gas pipeline and power line) and in interiors f.r f.om edges. Comparisons between the seedling communities were perf.rmed to access edge ef.ects. Density and basal area patterns were compared using, hierarchical two-way ANOVAs and the number of.newly germinated seedlings, mortality and resprouts were compared by one-way ANOVAs. The results showed that edge ef.ects of.linear canopy openings af.ect seedling communities leading to low densities on edges that showed less f.vorable conditions f.r arrival, establishment and initial survival. The basal area patterns were not af.ected by edge ef.ects apparently by the resistance of.the seedlings that have more than 4 mm diameter. Theref.re, linear canopy openings caused edge ef.ects, which determine low seedling densities on edges. However this pattern is not due to increase mortality on these edges, but probably caused by the reduction on germination and establishment.

Localized-states quantum conf.nement induced by roughness in CdMnTe/CdTe heterostructures grown on Si(111) substrates

This work shows that despite a lattice mismatch of.almost 20%, CdMnTe/CdTe/CdMnTe heterostructures grown directly on Si(111) have surprisingly good optical emission properties. The investigated structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy, macro-and micro-photoluminescence. Low temperature macro-photoluminescence experiments indicate three emission bands which depend on the CdTe layer thickness and have dif.erent conf.nement characteristics. Temperature measurements reveal that the lower energy emission band (at 1.48 eV)is associated to def.cts and bound exciton states, while the main emission at 1.61 eV has a weak 2D character and the higher energy one at 1.71 eV has a well-def.ned (zero-dimensional, 0D) 0D nature. Micro-photoluminescence measurements show the existence of.sharp and strongly circularly polarized (up to 40%) emission lines which can be related to the presence of.Mn in the heterostructure. This result opens the possibility of.producing photon sources with the typical spin control of.the diluted magnetic semiconductors using the low-cost silicon technology.

Thermomechanical Behavior Modeling of.a Cr-Ni-Mo-Mn-N Austenitic Stainless Steel

The analytical approach and the thermomechanical behavior of.a Cr-Ni-Mo-Mn-N austenitic stainless steel were characterized based on the parameters of.work hardening (h), dynamic recovery (r) and dynamic recrystallization (n, t0.5), considering constitutive equations (σ, ε) and def.rmation conditions expressed according to the Zener-Hollomon parameter (Z). The results indicated that the curves were af.ected by the def.rmation conditions and that the stress levels increased with Z under high work hardening rates. The σc/σp ratio was relatively high in the f.rst part of.the curves, indicating that sof.ening was promoted by intense dynamic recovery (DRV). This was corroborated by the high values of.r and average stacking f.ult energy, γsf. = 66.86 mJ/m2, which f.cilitated the thermally activated mechanisms, increasing the ef.ectiveness of.DRV and delaying the onset of.dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The second part of.the curves indicates that there was a delay in the kinetics of.dynamic sof.ening, with a higher value of.t0.5 and lower values of.the Avrami exponent (n) due to the competing DRV-DRX mechanisms, and steady state stress (σss) was achieved under higher rates of.def.rmation.

Edge Ef.ects of.Oil Pipeline Canopy Openings on Tree Community Structure and Dynamics in a Montane Atlantic f.rest

The Atlantic f.rest has historically been severely def.rested, and only f.agments currently remain that are subject to a wide variety of.anthropogenic impacts, including edge ef.ects that can cause structural and f.nctional degradation. The Tinguá Biological Reserve-RJ comprises approximately 26,000 hectares of.well-preserved Atlantic f.rest, but it is subject to impacts caused by two canopy openings along oil pipelines. Comparisons were made between pipeline edges and f.rest interiors to evaluate edge ef.ects on the structure and dynamics of.those tree communities. Tree densities were higher along f.rest edges, apparently increasing over time. Tree basal areas, on the other hand, have decreased along edges due to higher mortality rates. Linear canopy opening edges showed higher densities of.small trees, while the interior had more very large trees, indicating changes in successional processes and community structural patterns due to edge ef.ects.
