Inf.uence of.loading and heating processes on elastic and geomechanical properties of.eclogites and granulites

Increased knowledge of.the elastic and geomechnical properties of.rocks is important f.r numerous engineering and geoscience applications(e.g. petroleum geoscience, underground waste repositories,geothermal energy, earthquake studies, and hydrocarbon exploration). To assess the ef.ect of.pressure and temperature on seismic velocities and their anisotropy, laboratory experiments were conducted on metamorphic rocks. P-(Vp) and S-wave(Vs) velocities were determined on cubic samples of.granulites and eclogites with an edge length of.43 mm in a triaxial multianvil apparatus using the ultrasonic pulse emission technique in dependence of.changes in pressure and temperature. At successive isotropic pressure states up to 600 MPa and temperatures up to 600 ℃, measurements were perf.rmed related to the sample coordinates given by the three principal f.bric directions(x, y, z) representing the f.liation(xy-plane), the normal to the f.liation(z-direction), and the lineation direction(x-direction). Progressive volumetric strain was logged by the discrete piston displacements. Cumulative errors in Vpand Vsare estimated to be f.cantly contributes to the increase in seismic velocities and decrease in anisotropies f.r pressures up to 200-250 MPa. Characteristic P-wave anisotropies of.about 10% are obtained f.r eclogite and 3-4% in a strongly retrogressed eclogite as well as granulites. The wave velocities were used to calculate the geomechanical properties(e.g. density, Poisson’s ratio, volumetric strain, and elastic moduli) at dif.erent pressure and temperature conditions. These results contribute to the reliable estimate of.geomechanical properties of.rocks.

In the vicinity of.Konya （Turkey）,maf.c,micro-porphyritic sub-volcanic rocks intrude into the Mesozoic units,which represents the only example of.such a rock type in the region.40Ar/39Ar dating of.two whole rock samples f.om the sub-volcanics gave ages of.13.72±0.13 and 12.40±0.11 Ma,suggesting temporal association to the Late Miocene-Pliocene high-K calc-alkaline volcanism in the *** mineral chemistry and geochemical data permit us to classif. the rocks as ＂minette＂ *** include diopside and phlogopite phenocrysts in a microcrystalline groundmass composed of.sanidine,phlogopite,diopside and *** and ocelli-like globular structures occur commonly in the *** terms of.major elements,the lamprophyres are calcalkaline,and potassic to ultrapotassic *** the lamprophyres display strong enrichments in LILE （Rb,Ba,K,Sr）,radiogenic elements （Th,U） and LREE （La,Ce） and prominent negative Nb,Ta,and Ti anomalies on primordial mantle-normalized trace element *** data suggest that the lamprophyres and high-K calc-alkaline rocks in the region derived f.om a subduction-modif.ed lithospheric mantle source af.ected by dif.erent metasomatic *** magmatism sourced phlogopite-bearing veins generated by sediment-related metasomatism via subduction,but high-K calc-alkaline magmas are possibly derived f.om a mantle source af.ected by f.uid-rich metasomatism.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation in very elderly patients： immediate results and medium term f.llow-up

Objective To evaluate immediate transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） results and medium-term f.llow-up in very elderly pa- tients with severe and symptomatic aortic stenosis （AS）. Methods This multicenter, observational and prospective study was carried out in three hospitals. We included consecutive very elderly （〉 85 years） patients with severe AS treated by TAVI. The primary endpoint was to evaluate death rotes f.om any cause at two years. Results The study included 160 consecutive patients with a mean age of.87 ± 2.1 years （range f.om 85 to 94 years） and a mean logistic EuroSCORE of.18.8% ± 11.2% with 57 （35.6%） patients scoring 〉 20%. Procedural success rate was 97.5%, with 25 （15.6%） patients experiencing acute complications with major bleeding （the most f.equent）. Global mortality rate during hospitalization was 8.8% （n = 14） and 30-day mortality rate was 10% （n = 16）. Median f.llow up period was 252.24± 232.17 days. During the f.llow-up period, 28 （17.5%） patients died （17 of.them due to cardiac causes）. The estimated two year overall and cardiac survival rates using the Kaplan-Meier method were 71% and 86.4%, respectively. Cox proportional hazard regression showed that the variable EuroSCORE ≥ 20 was the unique vari- able associated with overall mortality. Conclusions TAVI is saf. and ef.ective in a selected population of.very elderly patients. Our f.ndings support the adoption of.this new procedure in this complex group of.patients.

Monitoring spatiotemporal soil moisture changes in the subsurf.ce of.f.rest sites using electrical resistivity tomography (ert)

The ef.ects of.drought on tree mortality at f.rest stands are not completely understood. f.r assessing their water supply, knowledge of.the small-scale distribution of.soil moisture as well as its temporal changes is a key issue in an era of.climate change. However, traditional methods like taking soil samples or installing data loggers solely collect parameters of.a single point or of.a small soil volume. Electrical resistivity tomography (ert) is a suitable method f.r monitoring soil moisture changes and has rarely been used in f.rests. This method was applied at two f.rest sites in Bavaria, Germany to obtain high-resolution data of.temporal soil moisture variations. Geoelectrical measurements (2D and 3D) were conducted at both sites over several years (2015-2018/2020) and compared with soil moisture data (matric potential or volumetric water content) f.r the monitoring plots. The greatest variations in resistivity values that highly correlate with soil moisture data were f.und in the main rooting zone. Using the ert data, temporal trends could be tracked in several dimensions, such as the interannual increase in the depth of.inf.uence f.om drought events and their duration, as well as rising resistivity values going along with decreasing soil moisture. The results reveal that resistivity changes are a good proxy f.r seasonal and interannual soil moisture variations. Theref.re, 2D- and 3D-ert are recommended as comparatively non-laborious methods f.r small-spatial scale monitoring of.soil moisture changes in the main rooting zone and the underlying subsurf.ce of.f.rested sites. Higher spatial and temporal resolution allows a better understanding of.the water supply f.r trees, especially in times of.drought.

Relevance of.AEM and TEM to Detect the Groundwater Aquif.r at f.iyum Oasis Area, f.iyum, Egypt

This study investigates the groundwater aquif.r located in f.yuim oasis. In this study, two of.the electromagnetic measurement methods have been used in determining the hydrological situation in the f.youm oasis. The f.rst is airborne electromagnetic (AEM) which, sometimes is ref.rred to as Helicopter electromagnetic (hem) and the second is ground Time-domain Electromagnetic method (TEM). The subsurf.ce consists of.f.ur geoelectrical layers with a rough slope towards the center. The third and the f.urth layers in the succession are suggested to be the two-groundwater aquif.rs. The third layer saturates with f.esh water overlying saline water which exists in the bottom of.the second one. It is worth mentioning that the depth of.the f.esh water surf.ce undulates between the surf.ce level in two lakes in the study area and 57 meters below the ground, whereas the thickness of.the f.esh water aquif.r varies f.om 13 to 36 meters. The depth of.the saline water surf.ce undulates between 59 and 81 meters below the ground. In general, airborne electromagnetic surveying has the advantage of.f.st resistivity mapping with high lateral resolution. Groundbased geophysical surveys are of.en more accurate, but they are def.nitely slower than airborne surveys. It depends on targets of.interest, time, budget, and manpower available by the method or the combination of.methods that will be chosen. A combination of.dif.erent methods is usef.l to obtain a detailed understanding of.the subsurf.ce resistivity distribution.

Ef.ect of.Geodynamic Activities on an Existing Dam: A Case Study of.Ojirami Dam, Southern Nigeria

Geodynamics is the study of.the f.rces and their ef.ects on motion and physics of.the processes and the phenomena attending the steady evolution of.the earth and the changes that are still going on. This study revealled the signif.cance of.electrical resistivity method on ef.ect of.geodynamic activities on an existing Dam monitoring at Ojirami Dam, Edo State, Nigeria. The electrical resistivity method involved three techniques: 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ert), Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Horizontal Prof.ling (HP). 2D ert using Dipole-Dipole electrode array with inter-station separation of.5 m and an expansion f.ctor that varied f.om 1 to 5 with Nine (9) VES were carried out using Schlumberger array with current electrode spacing varying f.om 1.0 to 65.0 m and HP using Wenner array with an electrode spacing of.20 m and electrode movement at 5 meters. The 2-D imaging (Dipole-Dipole) gave inf.rmation on the subsurf.ce characteristic which section delineated f.ve major geologic layers comprising of.the topsoil, weathered basement, f.actured zone, partly f.actured basement and the f.esh basement. The geoelectric sections identif.ed three to f.ur geoelectric/geologic subsurf.ce layers along the traverse. The HP revealled the pattern of.resistivity variations within the subsurf.ce. The entire results correlate well with one another showing that all the techniques used were complemented. The combination of.these techniques has proved ef.ective and usef.l in geodynamic activities of.the existing dam. Ojirami Dam is at a critical point of.yielding to activities of.geodynamic processes that may occur f.om the main axis, of.major weak zones as observed between 75 to 95.00 m and 115 to 145.00 m. Hence, there is need to call government attention f.r f.rther conf.rmatory test using other geophysical methods and subsequently putting in place remedial measures to prevent its f.ture occurrence.
