Neurotoxicity of the pesticide rotenone on neuronal polarization: a mechanistic approach

Neurons are the most extensive and polarized cells that display a unique single long axon and multiple dendrites, which are compartments exhibiting structural and functional differences. Polarity occurs early in neuronal development and it is maintained by complex subcellular mechanisms throughout cell life. A well-defined and controlled spatio-temporal program of cellular and molecular events strictly regulates the formation of the axon and dendrites from a non-polarized cell. This event is critical for an adequate neuronal wiring and therefore for the normal functioning of the nervous system. Neuronal polarity is very sensitive to the harmful effects of different factors present in the environment. In this regard, rotenone is a crystalline, colorless and odorless isoflavone used as insecticide, piscicide and broad spectrum pesticide commonly used earlier in agriculture. In the present review we will summarize the toxicity mechanism caused by this pesticide in different neuronal cell types, focusing on a particular biological mechanism whereby rotenone could impair neuronal polarization in cultured hippocampal neurons. Recent advances suggest that the inhibition of axonogenesis produced by rotenone could be related with its effect on microtubule dynamics, the actin cytoskeleton and their regulatory pathways, particularly affecting the small RhoGTPase RhoA. Unveiling the mechanism by which rotenone produces neurotoxicity will be instrumental to understand the cellular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases influenced by this environmental pollutant, which may lead to research focused on the design of new therapeutic strategies.

Probing intensity-field correlations of single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman-scattered light

In the context of the quantum-mechanical description of single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering,intensity-field correlation measurements of photons emitted from a plasmonic cavity are explored,theoretically,using the technique of conditional homodyne *** inelastic interplay between plasmons and vibrations of a diatomic molecule placed inside the cavity can be manifested in phase-dependent third-order fluctuations of the light recorded by the aforesaid technique,allowing us to reveal signatures of non-classicality(indicatives of squeezing)of the outgoing Raman photons.

A survey of static and dynamic potential games

Potential games are noncooperative games for which there exist auxiliary functions, called potentials,such that the maximizers of the potential are also Nash equilibria of the corresponding game. Some properties of Nash equilibria, such as existence or stability, can be derived from the potential, whenever it exists. We survey different classes of potential games in the static and dynamic cases, with a finite number of players, as well as in population games where a continuum of players is allowed. Likewise, theoretical concepts and applications are discussed by means of illustrative examples.

Magnetostriction Dependence of the Relaxation frequency in the Magnetoimpedance Effect for Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Ribbons

The magnetoimpedance effect and changes of the relaxation frequency fx are studied in CofeSiB and CofeMoSiB amorphous and feCuNbSiB nanocrystalline ribbons. The evolution of the magnetostriction constant λs and relaxation frequency is analysed for the states with different magnetic anisotropies induced in the same ribbons. A monotonic decrease of the relaxation frequency is observed for shifting of λs towards positive values.

Separation and recovery of critical metal ions using ionic liquids

Separation and purification of critical metal ions such as rare-earth elements （REEs）, scandium and niobium from their minerals is difficult and often deter- mines if extraction is economically and environmentally feasible. Solvent extraction is a commonly used metal-ion separation process, usually favored because of its sim- plicity, speed and wide scope, which is why it is often employed for separating trace metals from their minerals. However, the types of solvents widely used for the recovery of metal ions have adverse environmental impact. Alternatives to solvent extraction have been explored and advances in separation technologies have shown commer- cial establishment of liquid membranes as an alternative to conventional solvent extraction for the recovery of metals and other valuable materials. Liquid membrane transport incorporates solvent extraction and membrane separation in one continuously operating system. Both methods con- ventionally use solvents that are harmful to the environ- ment, however, the introduction of ionic liquids （ILs） over the last decade is set to minimize the environmental impact of both solvent extraction and liquid membrane separation processes. ILs are a family of organic molten salts with low or negligible vapour pressure which may be formed below 100 ~C. Such liquids are also highly thermally stable and less toxic. Their ionic structure makes them thermody- namically favorable solvents for the extraction of metallic ions. The main aim of this article is to review the current achievements in the separation of REE, scandium, niobium and vanadium from their minerals, using ILs in eithersolvent extraction or liquid membrane processes. The mechanism of separation using ILs is discussed and the engineering constraints to their application are identified.

The Internet of Moving Things(IoMT)takes a step further with respect to traditional static IoT *** this line,the integration of new eco-friendly mobility devices such as scooters or bicycles within the Cooperative-Intelligent Transportation Systems(C-ITS)and smart city ecosystems is crucial to provide novel *** this end,a range of communication technologies is available,such as cellular,vehicular Wifi or Low-Power Wide-Area Network(LPWAN);however,none of them can fully cover energy consumption and Quality of Service(QoS)***,we propose a Decision Support System(DSS),based on supervised Machine Learning(ML)classification,for selecting the most adequate transmission interface to send a certain message in a multi-Radio Access Technology(RAT)set *** ML algorithms have been explored taking into account computing and energy constraints of IoMT enddevices and traffic ***,a real implementation of a decision tree-based DSS for micro-controller units is presented and *** attained results demonstrate the validity of the proposal,saving energy in communication tasks as well as satisfying QoS requirements of certain urgent *** footprint of the real implementation on an Arduino Uno is 444 bytes and it can be executed in around 50µs.

National assessment of the evolution of forest fragmentation in Mexico

This paper presents assessments of the fragmentation of the temperate and tropical forests in Mexico at the national level for two dates 1993 and *** study was based on land use and vegetation cover data sets scale 1：250,*** broad forest types（Temperate forests and Tropical forests） and five more specific forest types（Broadleaf forests,and Coniferous forests;Tropical Dry Deciduous forests,Tropical Sub-evergreen forests,and Tropical Evergreen forests） were defined to conduct the *** 3.3 was used to estimate nine metrics of the spatial pattern of the forests for each forest type and date *** results indicate that the land cover transitions that have occurred between 1993 and 2002 have resulted in more isolated forest patches with simpler shapes in both the Temperate and Tropical *** remaining Tropical forest patches have become smaller and more *** contrast,the remaining Temperate forest patches are fewer and on average *** the more specific forest types defined in this study,the Broadleaf forests have the highest indicators of *** these forests are usually embedded or adjacent to Coniferous *** more concern for conservation purposes are the high values of fragmentation metrics found for the Tropical Evergreen forests and Tropical Dry Deciduous forests,because these forest types are usually surrounded by non-forest land covers or anthropogenic land uses.

A Nb-Cr-V-W-Ta high entropy alloy has been subjected to annealing treatment at 600,700 and 800℃in air for 6 *** different phases have been identified based on their composition in the as received *** annealing treatment does not alter the phase analysis and compositions except for the W-rich phase where minor changes in the composition have been *** is considered as an experimental evidence of sluggish diffusivity associated with *** of phase transformation during the heating and the minimal changes in observed compositions of the phases is an indication of the resistance to diffusion offered by the elements of the high entropy *** electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)and color X-ray elemental mapping have been used to conduct this research.
