Intracerebral Microdialysis in Neurosurgery for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Report of 2 Preliminary Cases

Neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders, notably for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), was initiated in Venezuela in the decade of 1970, and consisted since that time in the classic stereotactic anterior cingulotomy. In order to know further about the physiopathology of this disorder, we performed intracerebral microdialysis in 2 patients who were operated on. The aim was to measure changes in extracellular neurotransmitters within the basal ganglia. The microdialysis probes were stereotactically placed in the right caudate nucleus and in the dorsomedial nucleus of the right thalamus. The microdialysis was done before the left cingulotomy, during the pause and after the right cingulotomy. Glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) changes were similar in the caudate nucleus of both patients, whereas in the dorsomedial nucleus the changes were opposite among the 2 patients. Although this study does not bring enough data to explain such differences yet, the existence of dynamic changes in the neurochemistry of the basal ganglia during cingulotomy shows that intracerebral microdialysis can help in the understanding of the pathophysiology of OCD and eventually in the design of new surgeries with better results.

New Indicators of the Technological Impact of Scientific Production

Purpose:Building upon pioneering work by francis Narin and others,a new methodological approach to assessing the technological impact of scientific research is ***/methodology/approach:It is based on the analysis of citations made in patent families included in the PATSTAT database that is to scientific papers indexed in ***:An advanced citation matching procedure is applied to the data in order to construct two indicators of technological impact:on the citing(patent)side,the country/region in which protection is sought and a patent family’s propensity to cite scientific papers are taken into account,and on the cited(paper)side,a relative citation rate is defined for patent citations to papers that is similar to the scientific paper-to-paper citation rate in classical *** limitations:The results are limited by the available data,in our case Scopus and PATSTAT,and especially by the lack of standardization of references in *** required a matching procedure that is neither trivial nor *** implications:Results at the country/region,document type,and publication age levels are *** country/region-level results in particular reveal features that have remained hidden in analyses of straight *** notable is that the rankings of some Asian countries/regions move upwards when the proposed normalized indicator of technological impact is applied as against the case with straight counts of patent citations to those countries/regions’published ***/value:In our opinion,the level of sophistication of the indicators proposed in the current paper is unparalleled in the scientific literature,and provides a solid basis for the assessment of the technological impact of scientific research in countries/regions and institutions.

Effect of Cambering on the Aerodynamic Performance of Heaving Airfoils

In the present work,a parametric numerical study is conducted in order to assess the effect of airfoil cambering on the aerodynamic performance of rigid heaving *** incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in their velocity-pressure formulation using a second-order accurate in space and time finite-difference *** tackle the problem of moving boundaries,the governing equations are solved on overlapping structured *** numerical simulations are performed at a Reynolds number of Re=1100 and at different values of Strouhal number and reduced *** results obtained show that the airfoil cambering geometric parameter has a strong influence on the average lift coefficient,while it has a smaller impact on the average thrust coefficient and propulsive efficiency of heaving airfoils.

Integrating Electronic Systems for Requesting Clinical Laboratory Test into Digital Clinical Records: Design and Implementation

Clinical laboratory tests are basic elements that support healthcare tasks such as disease detection, diagnosis and monitoring of response to treatments. Current laboratory information systems focus on the patient database, tests and results, with multiple modules available, connecting with the various analytical systems or work areas. However laboratory information systems functioned as “islands of information”, because their design was fundamentally inward-looking and disconnected from other healthcare computer applications. Actually, the Electronic Health Register (EHR) is considered by clinicians as a tool with great potential healthcare benefits. The EHR, in the sense of a unique and complete record of a patient’s healthcare and state of health, regardless of the healthcare level used, is a real attempt to eliminate these “islands of information” and need modules to act as “bridges” with the laboratory information systems. This type of module, which in generic terms may be referred to as a laboratory test request module, has become an essential feature of the EHR. These modules need to use a laboratory coding system as a common language for exchanging information, ensuring that tests and results are unequivocally identified. The development of the laboratory test request module requires the commitment of professionals and political authorities, being necessary time for their design and an adequate pilot phase. The laboratory professionals have to assume a leadership role in the whole process of design, development and implementation of these modules, integrating in the equipment of information technologies of healthcare providers. In our manuscript we review the elements that may prove electronic systems for requesting clinical laboratory test into digital clinical records and the key elements to move from theory to practice.

Recent Advances to Understand Morphology Stability of Organic Photovoltaics

Organic photovoltaic devices are on the verge of commercialization with power conversion efficiencies exceeding 10 % in laboratory cells and above 8.5 % in modules. However, one of the main limitations hindering their mass scale production is the debatable inferior stability of organic photovoltaic devices in comparison to other *** donor/acceptor morphology of the active layer is required to provide carrier separation and transport to the electrodes. Unfortunately, the beneficial morphology for device performance is usually a kinetically frozen state which has not reached thermodynamic equilibrium. During the last 5 years, special efforts have been dedicated to isolate the effects related to morphology changes taking place within the active layer and compare to those affecting the interfaces with the external electrodes. The current review discusses some of the factors affecting the donor/acceptor morphology evolution as one of the major intrinsic degradation pathways. Special attention is paid to factors in the nano- and microscale *** example, phase segregation of the polymer and fullerene domains due to Ostwald ripening is a major factor in the microscale domain and is affected by the presence of additives, glass transition temperature of the polymers or use of crosslinkers in the active layer. Alternatively, the role of vertical segregation profile toward the external electrodes is key for device operation, being a clear case of nanoscale morphology evolution. for example, donor and acceptor molecules actually present at the external interfaces will determine the leakage current of the device, energy-level alignment, and interfacial recombination processes. Different techniques have been developed over the last few years to understand its relationship with the device efficiency. Abc-frame complex-coefficient filter and controller based current harmonic elimination strategy for three-phase grid connected inverter

Current quality is one of the most important issues for operating three-phase grid-connected inverter in distributed generation systems. In practice, the grid current quality is degraded in case of non-ideal utility voltage. A new control strategy is proposed for the three-phase gridconnected inverter. Different from the traditional method,our proposal utilizes the unique abc-frame complex-coefficient filter and controller to achieve the balanced, sinusoidal grid current. The main feature of the proposed method is simple and easy to implement without any frame transformation. The theoretical analysis and experimental test are presented. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Greenhouses Gases, Carbonyls, and Volatile Organic Compounds Surface flux Emissions at Three final Waste Disposal Sites Located in the Metropolitan Area of Costa Rica

The surface flux emissions for volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) (alcohols and aromatic species), priority carbonyls and greenhouse gases, were measured in three different final disposal sites for urban solid waste located in the metropolitan area of Costa Rica, between July and October 2014. The emissions fluxes were determined using the static sampling chamber technique coupled to two different adsorption tubes: active charcoal (Supelco, ORBO 32) to capture BTEX and alcohols;and 2,4-DNPH coated silica gel (SKC, 226-119) for carbonyls. As for the VOCs, the BTEX, Alcohols, and Carbonyls total fluxes were in the range of 3 to 258, 1 to 318 and 0.4 to 8.5 mg/(m2día), respectively. The magnitudes per site were in the following order La Carpio > El Huaso > Rio Azul. Ethanol and BTEX presented a high correlation in all the cases because possibly they are sharing the same sources or formation mechanisms. The emission fluxes spatial distributions among the sites were very variable and dependent on the location of the active cells and their age. Only La Carpio showed a more homogeneous distribution due to its middle age.

Group theory(GT) provides a rigorous framework for studying symmetries in various disciplines in physics ranging from quantum field theories and the standard model to fluid mechanics and chaos theory. To date, the application of such a powerful tool in optical physics remains limited. Over the past few years however, several quantum-inspired symmetry principles(such as parity-time invariance and supersymmetry) have been introduced in optics and photonics for the first time. Despite the intense activities in these new research directions, only few works utilized the power of group theory. Motivated by this status quo, here we present a brief overview of the application of GT in optics, deliberately choosing examples that illustrate the power of this tool in both continuous and discrete setups. We hope that this review will stimulate further research that exploits the full potential of GT for investigating various symmetry paradigms in optics, eventually leading to new photonic devices.

A conserved arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal core-species community colonizes potato roots in the Andes

Plant-symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMf)are of high global ecological and economic importance,but describing environmental communities of AMf at the species level remains a challenge,despite the need to understand AMf-plant preferences and to apply AMf in sustainable ***,the potato-associated AMf species community composition was assessed for three Andean countries along an altitudinal gradient and at different plant stages,by using 454 GS-fLX+sequencing of a 760 bp LSU rRNA gene PCR *** methods were compared:defining OTUs based on a simple sequence similarity threshold,or affiliating reference sequences to species based on a high throughput phylogenetic annotation approach using an evolutionary placement algorithm(EPA).The EPA-based approach was not only more precise,but also fundamental to robustly unveil the AMf species community *** principal advantage of this approach was also demonstrated by using artificially constructed datasets based on validated public database *** affiliation of sequence reads to species using phylogenetic annotation revealed a surprisingly conserved AMf core-species community structure in Andean potatoes,regardless of different plant stages and environmental *** total,41 species were detected and in some cases more than 25 species were found colonizing an individual root *** species were identified as dominant colonizers,co-occurring with Cetraspora nodosa and certain Claroideoglomus and Rhizophagus species in most potato root samples.
