Background:Venous ulcer represents the most advanced stage of chronic venous *** is an important public health problem and has a significant impact on patients’quality of life due to chronic pain,inability to work,need for hospitalization and frequent outpatient ***:We investigated the treatment benefits of far-infrared ceramic(cfIR),in a 90-day study of lower limb venous ulcers and looked at ulcer healing scores,quality of life,serum bio-markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense ***,setting,participants and interventions:This is a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study conducted in the Vascular Surgery Service of a hospital located in the northwest region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul,*** included patients with lower limb venous ulcers who were randomized to use either a bioceramics wrap or a placebo wrap for 90 *** outcome measures:The following evaluations were conducted at baseline and after 15,30,60 and90 days:ulcer healing score,quality of life,and serum markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme ***:Patients(n=24)with lower limb venous ulcers were randomized into two treatment *** decreased the ulcer size on day 30(P=0.042)and 90(P=0.034)and the total ulcer healing scale scores on day 30(P=0.049)and 90(P=0.02)of the treatment,when compared to ***,cfIR improved tissue type(epithelial tissue)on day 60(P=0.022)when compared to baseline ***:cfIR clinically improved ulcer healing in patients with lower limb venous *** registration:RBR-8c7xzn on ReBEC.

Comparison of morphological and functional outcomes of mouse sciatic nerve repair with three biodegradable polymer conduits containing poly (lactic acid)

Poly（lactic acid）（PLA）-containing nerve guidance conduits（NGCs） are currently being investigated for nerve repair as an alternative to autograft, which leads to permanent functional impairment in the territory innervated by the removed nerve. Combination of polymers modifies the physical properties of the conduits, altering their nerve-guidance properties. Conduits made from PLA-only or combined with other polymers have been used successfully for nerve repair, but their efficiency has not been compared. We compared the morphological and functional outcomes of peripheral nerve repair by using NGCs made of poly（lactic acid） and combined or not with polycaprolactone（PLA/PCL） or polyvinylpyrrolidone（PLA/PVP）. To assess the functional recovery, we employed a mechanical hyperalgesia analysis, sciatic functional index（SfI）, and electroneuromyography. The mechanical hyperalgesia analysis showed that the PLA group improved more rapidly than the PLA/PVP and PLA/PCL groups; similarly, in the electroneuromyography assay, the PLA group exhibited higher amplitude than the PLA/PCL and PLA/PVP groups. However, the SfI improvement rates did not differ among the groups. Morphologically, the PLA group showed more vascularization, while the nerve fiber regeneration did not differ among the groups. In conclusion, the PLA-only conduits were superior to the other NGCs tested for nerve repair.

The Current and future Role of Drugs and Probiotics in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other auto-inflammatory disorders are conditions caused by chronic and persistent intestinal inflammation, which is mainly represented by Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Crohn’s Disease (CD), both of which typically arise as chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Doctor’s main focus for treating IBD is the decrease on inflammation processes when the disease is active and promotes the maintenance of inflammation at normal levels. However, to deal with these two parameters is not easy, because the drugs usually used are related to several side effects and they are not totally effective to reduce inflammation and to keep the remission. Authors agree that the therapy approach should include drugs, dietary intervention and use of alternative substances as probiotics. The standard treatment approach for patients with CD and UC is traditionally done with the use of anti-inflammatory agents, like corticosteroids, mesalamine, immunomodulators such as azathioprine and methotrexate, and biologic agents such as infliximab and others. Probiotics are known as viable micro-organisms (or live microorganisms or live microbial dietary supplements) that may promote beneficial physiologic or therapeutic properties when used correctly. The interest in the role of these substances in improving human health is the reason of several researches. They may be used to help the immune system, to control gastro-intestinal infections and to prevent several diseases. Prebiotics, symbiotics, and probiotics may be helpful as adjuvants in the treatment of IBD. Probiotics are normally well-tolerated and are associated with few side effects which are undoubtedly important in the treatment of any disease.

Allelopathic Effect of the Coffee Residue in Emergency and Urochloa brizantha Growth

Weed management is important for the increase of agricultural crops, since they have a negative influence on yield and harvest quality. To optimize the management it is possible to use the coffee infusion residues, which has caffeine contents, a substance that has an allelopathic effect to some plants. Thus, the goal was to evaluate the allelopathic effect of coffee residues in the emergence and growth of Urochloa brizantha under product doses, gathering and application seasons in pre- and post-emergence. The experiment was carried out at UfLA, in a greenhouse with potting, with Urochloa brizantha seeds, cultivar Piata, in DBC with three replicates in the factorial (3 × 4 × 2): time of gathering (A, B, C);concentration of ground (0, 20, 50 and 100 (% W/V)) and pre- and post-emergence application. The height, fresh and dry weight, Emergence Speed Index—ESI and phytotoxicity were evaluated. It was verified the significance for pre-emergence treatments, reducing plant height, increasing phytotoxicity and reducing fresh weight. for the ESI, it was identified that only for gathering season obtained a significant result. In the phytotoxicity evaluations, it obtained interaction for the season of application with residue gathering season. for product doses and applications in pre- and post-emergence interaction was observed for phytotoxicity. It is concluded that the residue has allelopathic effect reducing growth and increasing phytotoxicity up to a maximum dose of 55.83 and 86.76 for pre- and post-emergence applications of Urochloa brizantha.

Oxidation of lipids in various products,along with the growth of medically important pathogens,has led to a search for medicinal plants with antioxidant and antimicrobial *** a result,the aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus(EO-Eg).Antioxidant activity was assessed by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate(DPPH)assay *** components were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)*** activity and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)were assessed by using the broth microdilution method with standard multidrug-resistant bacterial *** main EO-Eg compounds identified by GC-MS were isopulegol,citronellal,and citronellol,which are primarily used in the industrial ***-Eg demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity with an effective concentration(EC50)of 4.48μL/mL owing to the presence of phenolic *** antibacterial activity,the EO-Eg displayed a broad antimicrobial spectrum of antimicrobial activity across the different resistance phenotypes *** most notable antibacterial activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus 169 MRSA(MIC=0.0625%).As a result,our findings suggest that EO-Eg has antioxidant and antibacterial potential against hospital-acquired multidrug-resistant pathogens,which may be correlated with its major components.

forest-grassland mosaics comprise a major component of tropical landscapes,hosting invaluable biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services to hundreds of millions of people *** open biomes often benefit from disturbance,forests can particularly be susceptible to structural changes resulting from such *** we evaluate the influence of fire on the structure and landscape properties within natural forest islands immersed in a matrix of megadiverse montane *** conducted this study in 15 forest islands located in southeastern Brazil,assessing its fire frequency,intensity,and post-fire time over an eleven-year period from January 2012 to December *** results show that fire frequency is linked to soil characteristics and the percentage of herbaceous cover within the forest *** also found that the post-fire time is related to the percentage cover of the forest islands’associated herbs and ***,neither fire frequency,intensity,nor post-fire time was connected to significant changes in plant species richness,abundance,or in the upper vegetation strata(tree species richness and abundance,and canopy cover)in the interior of the forest ***,these fire-related variables did not result in temporal changes in the forest island’s canopy variation or landscape *** results underscore a low fire frequency and intensity within our study area,potentially explaining the limited fire-associated impact,and primarily on the lower vegetation *** acknowledging the relative stability of these forest islands under current fire regimes,we suggest further studies that can experimentally manipulate not only fire but also other anthropic disturbances for understanding the temporal dynamics of the forest islands and,consequently,their *** perspective is indispensable for comprehensively understanding the ecological consequences of anthropogenic disturbances in natural forest islands.

Dermatomycoses are a group of diseases worldwide distributed and affect skin, hair and nails. Several fungal species can be envolved and keratinophilic fungi belonging to the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton are very common. These infections are globally distributed and their incidence has progressively increased. Despite their high incidence, few studies have been carried out in HIV-infected patients, regarding frequency, clinical presentations, and species identification. This study aimed to evaluate some epidemiological and clinical aspects of dermatophytosis in HIV-infected patients and to attempt phenotypical and molecular characteristics of their agents. Of 398 patients included, 306 were HIV-infected. Clinical data and samples of skin, hair and nail lesions were simultaneously obtained. The dermatophytes yielded in culture were phenotypically identified and evaluated by ITS-RfLP and ITS (Internal Transcribed Space) sequencing. Dermatophytes frequency in HIV-infected patients with cutaneous lesions was 11.76% similar to the 15.22% observed in non-HIV individuals. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common isolated species in both groups. Throught ITS-RfLP, 29/32 (90.63%) of dermatophytes isolates were identified at the species level. from the 10 isolates randomly selected for ITS sequencing, seven confirmed the ITS-RfLP results while three Trichophyton sp. were not identified as dermatophytes. The identification of these species in HIV-infected patients is highly desirable in order to improve the knowledge of their frequency, geographical distribution and relation to clinical presentation.
