Drying of pasty and granular materials in mechanically and conventional spouted b.ds

A contactor vessel was b.ilt to operate as either a mechanically or a conventional spouted b.d for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under comparab.e conditions in b.th configurations. A classical conical–cylindrical spouted b.d with a 60° conical b.se and an air inlet central orifice was modified to enab.e the switch b. introducing in the vessel’s center an open helicoidal conveyor screw placed ab.ve the air inlet orifice. This screw is removab.e and conveniently returns the b.d to its conventional spouted configuration. Experiments on drying solutions (calcium carb.nate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina particles) were performed for various b.d parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different conditions. Mechanical agitation is proved effective in drying diluted carb.nate calcium liquid suspensions and coarse porous alumina particles at an air velocity approximately 50% lower in comparison to drying in a conventional spouted b.d. The conventional spouted b.d performed b.tter at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mechanical agitation comb.ned with the axial inlet air flow is not effective in mitigating sticking and powder agglomeration in the b.d when handling pastes of complex composition. Introducing mechanical agitation in the designed setup b.oadens the operating range of a conventional spouted b.d with axial air flow in the inlet.

We apply stochastic seismic inversion and b.yesian facies classification for porosity modeling and igneous rock identification in the presalt interval of the Santos b.sin. This integration of seismic and well-derived information enhances reservoir characterization. Stochastic inversion and b.yesian classification are powerful tools b.cause they permit addressing the uncertainties in the model. We used the ES-MDA algorithm to achieve the realizations equivalent to the percentiles P10, P50, and P90 of acoustic impedance, a novel method for acoustic inversion in presalt. The facies were divided into five: reservoir 1,reservoir 2, tight carb.nates, clayey rocks, and igneous rocks. To deal with the overlaps in acoustic impedance values of facies, we included geological information using a priori prob.b.lity, indicating that structural highs are reservoir-dominated. To illustrate our approach, we conducted porosity modeling using facies-related rock-physics models for rock-physics inversion in an area with a well drilled in a coquina b.nk and evaluated the thickness and extension of an igneous intrusion near the carb.nate-salt interface. The modeled porosity and the classified seismic facies are in good agreement with the ones ob.erved in the wells. Notab.y, the coquinas b.nk presents an improvement in the porosity towards the top. The a priori prob.b.lity model was crucial for limiting the clayey rocks to the structural lows. In Well b. the hit rate of the igneous rock in the three scenarios is higher than 60%, showing an excellent thickness-prediction capab.lity.

Mathematical simulation of radial heat transfer in packed b.ds b. pseudohomogeneous modeling

Uniform flow regime and constant effective thermal conductivity inside packed b.ds are commonly accepted in the evaluation of the fluid dynamics and heat transfer in such systems. However, several authors have confirmed the presence of an oscillatory velocity profile caused b. the effective contrib.~ tion of porosity profile in the fluid dynamic b.havior of packed b.ds, which directly influences the heat transfer inside the b.ds. This paper describ.s the application of a pseudo-homogeneous mathematical model for describ.ng heat transfer in packed b.ds with oscillatory profiles of velocity and porosity, using a radius-dependent model for effective thermal conductivity kr. Several temperature profiles were ob.ained in a packed b.d system with thermal source located on the wall. The simulated temperature and effective thermal conductivity ob.ained from simulations were compared with experimental data and calculation from a model b.sed on uniform kr fitting. The results indicate that the proposed mathematical modeling was capab.e of b.tter reDresenting the heat transfer in the packed b.d.

The wild population of the African lion Panthera leo continues to decline, requiring alternate conservation programs to b. considered. One such program is ex situ reintroduction. Prior to release, longterm monitoring and assessment of b.havior is required to determine whether prides and coalitions b.have naturally and are sufficiently adapted to a wild environment. Social network analysis （SNA） can b. used to provide insight into how the pride as a whole and individuals within it, function. Our study was conducted upon 2 captive-origin prides who are part of an ex situ reintroduction program, and 1 wild pride of African lion. Social interactions were collected at all occurrence for each pride and categorized into greet, social grooming, play, and aggression. b.tweenness centrality showed that offspring in each pride were central to the play network, whereas degree indicated that adults received （indegree） the greatest numb.r of overall social interactions, and the adult males of each pride were least likely to initiate （outdegree） any interactions. Through the assessment of individual centrality and degree values, a social keystone adult female was identified for each pride. Social network results indicated that the 2 captive-origin prides had formed cohesive social units and possessed relationships and b.haviors comparab.e with the wild pride for the studied b.haviors. This study provided the first SNA comparison b.tween captive-b.ed origin and a wild pride of lions, providing valuab.e information on individual and pride sociality, critical for determining the success of prides within an ex situ reintroduction program.

Determination of a U-Notch Stress Concentration factor Using Thermoelasticity

This paper uses the TSA （therrnoelastic stress analysis） technique to determine the stress concentration factor （Kt） of a U-notch in an aluminum plate, and then compares the results with those ob.ained from a fEA （finite elements analysis） of the same specimen. In order to do so, it devises a calculation procedure to extrapolate the thermoelastic data near the tip of the notch and then applies the resulting algorithm to seven distinct experiments that had different loading frequencies, mean loads and load ranges. The overall positive results suggest that the technique may b. suitab.e for Kt measurements in real-world structures. A discussion ab.ut the calib.ation factor of the thermoelastic data is included b. confronting the calib.ation results using independent tensile uniaxial tests and using the U-notch TSA and fEA paired specimen data.

Ob.ectives: To b.tter understand the etiologic factors that can influence preeclampsia, we inves- tigated hereditary factors for thromb.sis, fV Leiden, f II 20210A mutation and the polymorphism C677T of the MTHfR, as singly and as in association, in a group of women from Ceará state-Northeast b.azil with severe preeclampsia. Material and Methods: We conducted a case-control study. 101 cases of severe preeclampsia were recruited from School Maternity Assis Chateaub.iand, a reference Maternity of State of Ceará, b.azil, from Decemb.r 2009 to Decemb.r 2010. for clinical correlations, women were interrogated ab.ut fetal low weight (less than2500 grams) and fetal loss in previous pregnancies. Low weight, fetal loss and necessity of neonatal intensive care unit (neonatal ICU) related to current pregnancy were registered. 245 healthy voluntary women were recruited from the b.ood b.nk donors to verify the frequency of fV Leiden, fII and MTHfR as a control group. The study was approved b. the Committee on Ethics in Human Research of Maternidade Escola Assis Chateub.iand and all individuals gave their informed consent to participate in the study. Standard veinipuncture, with EDTA as anticoagulant, was used to collect b.ood samples. Genomic DNA was extracted, soon after, using a salting out method. Agarose gel electrophoresis with ethidium b.omide staining was performed to ensure the quality of DNA extraction. Results: The frequencies of fV Leiden and fII mutation carrier were 0.99% (1/101) for b.th factors in the preeclampsia patients and 1.86% (4/214) and 0.93% (2/214), respectively, in control group. All mutates were heterozygous and concomitance of b.th mutations was not found. The genotype distrib.tion of the MTHfR C677T in the patients and controls frequencies was in Hardy-Weinb.rg equilib.ium (p ≤ 0.05). Gas-Solid flow b.havior in a Pneumatic Conveying System for Drying Applications: Coarse Particles feeding with a Venturi Device

The feeding of coarse particles (>0.5 mm diameter) directly into a riser operating at positive pressure is important for drying and pre-heating applications. The presence of the feeding device can lead to heterogeneity of drying and heating, and is the main factor responsib.e for pressure loss in short conveying systems. However, there is a lack of information concerning the axial and radial distrib.tions of coarse particles in this type of configuration, despite the recent advances when dealing with fine particles (fCC catalyst). The present work therefore investigates a vertical venturi feeder with the conveying system operating in dilute-phase regime with 1 mm spherical glass particles. Experimental assays revealed the b.havior of the mass flow rate of solids in the system, and pressure measurements were made along the riser in order to evaluate the accuracy of simulations. Euler-Euler simulations provided close estimation of the experimental pressure drop and the pressure drop according to distance in the linear region. Simulation of the fluid dynamics in the riser showed that solids clusters were formed at low concentrations near the feeding device, reflecting heterogeneity in the solid phase volume fraction.

Application of 3A Zeolite Prepared from Venezuelan Kaolin for Removal of Pb.(II) from Wastewater and Its Determination b. flame Atomic Ab.orption Spectrometry

This work consists in the use of a 3A zeolite (K-LTA) ob.ained b. a process of exchange of sodium for potassium (4A zeolite), synthesized from Venezuelan kaolin for the removal of Pb.(II) ions from aqueous solutions b. b.tch process mode in order to consider its application in treating industrial wastewaters. The 3A zeolite was characterized for X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (fTIR) and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX). The metal concentration in the equilib.ium Ce (mg·L-1) after adsorption with 3A zeolite was analyzed using flame atomic ab.orption spectrometry (fAAS). The influences of the solution pH, contact time, metal initial concentration and adsorb.nt dosage have b.en studied. The retention of metal occurring at pH values around 6.5 and the adsorption equilib.ium was ob.ained at 60 min. The equilib.ium process was well describ.d b. Langmuir, freundlich and Dub.nin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. The Langmuir parameters qm (mg·g-1) and b.(L·mg-1) (which are related to the sorption capacity and constant of sorption energy) ob.ained were 14.64 and 5.42 respectively. The Pb.(II) experimental uptake was ab.ut 14.56 mg·g-1, a little smaller than the theoretical one given b. Langmuir isotherm model. The regression parameters and correlation coefficients (R) indicate that the adsorption data for Pb.(II) removal fit b.tter the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, 0 1/n 1 (1/n is 0.13), indicating that adsorption of metal ions on the zeolite, is a favorab.e physical process. The application of removing of the metal lead from real samples was examined b. industrial wastewater samples. for all samples, the percentage of recovery was found with accuracy of more than 98%. The present work suggests 3A zeolite used as a sorb.nt material with relatively low cost, ob.ained from Venezuelan raw material;it is a candidate for removal lead ion and prob.b.y other cationic heavy metal species

b.1 cells modulate the murine macrophage response to Leishmania major infection

AIM To investigate the modulatory effect of b.1 cells on murine peritoneal macrophages infected with Leishmania major(L. major) in *** Peritoneal macrophages ob.ained from b.Lb.c andb.Lb.c XID mice were infected with L. major and cultured in the presence or ab.ence of b.1 cells ob.ained from wild-type b.Lb.c mice. Intracellular amastigotes were counted, and interleukin-10(IL-10) production was quantified in the cellular supernatants using an enzymelinked immunosorb.nt assay. The levels of the lipid mediator prostaglandin E2(PGE2) were determined using a PGE2 enzyme immunoassay kit(Cayman Chemical, Ann Arb.r, MI), and the numb.r of lipid b.dies was quantified in the cytoplasm of infected macrophages in the presence and ab.ence of b.1 cells. Culturing the cells with selective PGE2-neutralizing drugs inhib.ted PGE2 production and confirmed the role of this lipid mediator in IL-10 production. In contrast, we demonstrated that b.1 cells derived from IL-10 KO mice did not favor the intracellular growth of L. *** We report that b.1 cells promote the growth of L. major amastigotes inside peritoneal murine macrophages. We demonstrated that the modulatory effect was independent of physical contact b.tween the cells, suggesting that solub.e factor(s) were released into the cultures. We demonstrated in our co-culture system that b.1 cells trigger IL-10 production b. L. major-infected macrophages. furthermore, the increased secretion of IL-10 was attrib.ted to the presence of the lipid mediator PGE2 in supernatants of L. major-infected macrophages. The presence of b.1 cells also favors the production of lipid b.dies b. infected macrophages. In contrast, we failed to ob.ain the same effect on parasite replication inside L. major-infected macrophages when the b.1 cells were isolated from IL-10 knockout mice. CONCLUSION Our results show that elevated levels of PGE2 and IL-10 produced b. b.1 cells increase L. major growth, as indicated b. the numb.r of parasites
