Prevalence and Factors Associated with Hypertension among People Living with HIV Receiving Care in Three Large HIV Clinics in Nasarawa State, Nigeria

In the last decade, the long-term survival among people living with HIV (PLHIV) has significantly improved. This is accompanied by an increased burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension due to the combined effect of the aging population and the metabolic effect of the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) virion and antiretroviral therapy. This study aims to assess the prevalence and factors associated with hypertension among people living with HIV in three large health facilities in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study employed a multistage sampling technique to select 309 adults with HIV, 18 years and above, receiving HIV care in three large health facilities in Nasarawa State. The outcome variable was the participants’ self-reported history of hypertension, confirmed through a positive history of hypertension treatment. Exposure variables included the participant’s socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and HIV care and treatment history. Data were presented using frequency tables. Factors associated with hypertension were assessed using binary logistic regression at a 0.05 level of statistical significance. A total of 309 adults living with HIV were sampled. A larger percentage of the participants were married 228 (73.8%), female, 191 (61.8%), within the age group 41 - 50 years, 141 (45.6%). Most of the participants had no family history of hypertension, 188 (60.8%). The prevalence of self-reported hypertension was 11.0% (34/309). Factors associated with hypertension at the bivariate level were age group 21 - 30 years, 41 - 50 years, being widow/widower, divorced, retired from employment or with family history of hypertension. only participants age group 31 - 40 years [Adjusted odd Ratio (AoR): 0.18, 95%CI: 0.04 - 0.91, p = 0.04] and family history of hypertension [(AoR): 83.44, 95%CI: 15.75 - 442.11, p ound to predict hypertension among the study participants after adjusting for confounders. The aim of the study is to comparatively assess the concentrations of lead, zinc and iron in Rivers Ase, Warri and Ethiope, in Nigeria. Monthly water samples were collected from six randomly selected sites along the rivers course. 72 water samples were collected from each river at 0 - 15 cm depths. Samples were analysed based on the standard methods recommended by the WHo for testing lead, zinc and iron. The assessment of the water quality was done using the Water Quality Index (WQI) of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME-WQI). While hypotheses were tested using ANoVA. Findings indicated that CCME-WQI values were 47.3, 66.52 and 78.7. This meant that the water quality of River Ase is impaired and departed from desirable levels, while that of Warri and Ethiope were considered to occasionally be impaired and depart from desirable levels. The ANoVA model showed that there is a significant variation in heavy metal load in the selected rivers at P o domestic uses such as drinking (20.5%) preparing food (17.8%), bathing (19.8%), washing clothes and dishes (21.3%), brushing teeth (13.3%), and catering for domestic animals (7.5%). Poverty (49.5%) was the major reason for the use of river water for domestic purposes. The locals highlighted that they usually suffer from cholera (26.8%), diarrhoea (25.8%), dysentery (24%) and typhoid (23.5%) as a result of using the river water. The study recommended routine monitoring of anthropogenic and geologic activities, testing of the water regularly amongst others.

Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, while malaria is the leading cause of death from parasitic diseases in Nigeria. Historically, plant remedies have been used to manage both cancer and ***, the possibility of treating cancer with antimalarial remedies has long been reported, even though the two diseases appear to have little in common. However, a body of research has indicated the potential anticancer activity of both synthetic and nature-derived antimalarials. In Nigeria, over 100 plants are used for the management of malaria, but little is known for their potential role in combatting cancer. Therefore, this review is to highlight the documented anticancer activities of plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, with the goal of supporting anticancer drug discovery. Scientific databases were used to search for antimalarial plants using selected keywords. of over 100 plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, 56 have documented anticancer properties, containing alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenes,terpenoids, quinones, anthraquinones, saponins, steroids, sterols, organosulfur compounds and other polyphenols as the major bioactive components. The major mechanisms of anticancer activity include induction of apoptosis and autophagy, arrest of cell growth, generation of reactive oxygen species and inhibition of angiogenesis. However, mechanistic and clinical investigations of the anticancer properties of most of these plants are still lacking. Notwithstanding, the huge anticancer potential uncovered by the in vitro or in vivo studies and a few clinical studies, Nigerian antimalarial plants may provide a valuable resource, ready to be harnessed for anticancer drug development.

oil-based drilling fluid(oBDF)is used to drill through high permeable pay zone to prevent possible damage to the ***,the oil based drilling fluid leaves behind filter cake residue and oilwet surfaces which hinder cement *** fluid is usually introduced to clean up the wellbore prior to cementing *** work presents a spacer fluid designed with environment-friendly anionic methyl ester sulphonate(MES)surfactant and evaluated through a series of experimental tests to ascertain its effectiveness to clean *** of methyl ester sulphonate to confected waterbased drilling fluid at high amount(0.15 g and 0.20 g)showed good rheological properties,compatibility with oBDF and cement and low contact angle on steel and sandstone in the range of 21.9°-34.7°.Furthermore,results show that it requires less amount of MES spacer fluid to revert oil-wet oBDF aqueous phase to water external continuous phase,validating the low contact angle *** efficiencies for two best performing MES spacer fluids achieved 83.27%and 94.3%*** bond strength were measured to be 1.3 MPa and 1.05 MPa for steel and sandstone respectively,above the minimum allowable shear bond strength for oil well ***,MES spacer fluid can be used to clean up wellbores in high permeable formations and in well completion,where strong cement bonding is required.

Co2 geological storage into a lateral aquifer of an offshore gas field in the South China Sea： storage safety and project design

The DFI-1 gas South China Sea, contains thus there is great concern field, located in the western a high concentration of Co2, about the need to reduce the Co2 emissions. Many options have been considered in recent years to dispose of the Co2 separated from the natural gas stream on the Hainan Island. In this study, the feasibility of Co2 storage in the lateral saline aquifer of the DF 1-1 gas field is assessed, including aquifer selection and geological assessment, Co2 migration and storage safety, project design, and economic analysis. Six offshore aquifers have been investigated for Co2 geological storage. The lateral aquifer of the DFI-1 gas field has been selected as the best target for Co2 injection and storage because of its proven sealing ability, and the large storage capacity of the combined aquifer and hydrocarbon reservoir geological structure. The separated Co2 will be dehydrated on the Hainan Island and transported by a long- distance subsea pipeline in supercritical or liquid state to the central platform of the DFI-1 gas field for pressure adjustment. The Co2 will then be injected into the lateral aquifer via a subsea well-head through a horizontal well. Reservoir simulations suggest that the injected Co2 will migrate slowly upwards in the aquifer without disturbing the natural gas production. The scoping economic analysis shows that the unit storage cost of the project is approximately US$26-31/ton Co2 with the subsea pipe- line as the main contributor to capital expenditure （CAPEX）, and the dehydration system as the main factor of operating expenditure （oPEX）.

Context: Mediastinal masses occur worldwide. Compartmental occurrence and pathological variants vary widely, hence, the need for more studies. AIM: The study was conducted to further shed light on patho-physiological and current management challenges on mediastinal masses. Settings and Design: It was a pro-spective hospital based study spanning a period of 5 years. Methods and Materials: We gathered patients in series noting their ages and sex, presenting symptoms, investigation reports, treatment modalities and associ-ated postoperative complications. Statistical Analysis Used: Data was analysed manually looking at fre-quency distribution, correlation of malignancy with compartment involved and duration of symptoms against incidence of malignancy. Results: We saw 38 patients with significant male preponderance. Most tumours were in anterior mediastinum and population distribution was leptokurtic. Conclusions: Population distribu-tion of mediastinal masses is leptokurtic. The second to the fourth decades of life are mostly There was no correlation between occurrence of malignancy and the mediastinal compartment involved. occurrence of malignancy had no bearing with duration of symptoms. affected. Most benign tumours are symptomatic and duration of symptoms is not discriminatory between benign and malignant variants.
