Determination of the proximate, nutritionally valuable minerals and anti-nutrient compositions in larvae of Cirina forda (W) showed that they contained high levels of protein, (55.50%±1.20%) with ash, moisture, fat, and carbohydrate levels being (10.26%±0.01%), (10.85%±0.38%), (4.68%±0.01%) and (18.70%±0.84%) respectively. Fibre was not detected. Protein solubility was higher in alkaline media than in acidic media while the isoelectric points were pH 4, 6 and 9 indicating that C. forda may be useful in food formulations involving foods like meat products. Phosphorus had the highest value of (215.54±0.21) mg/100 g while manganese had the lowest value of (1.14±0.10) mg/100 g. Copper, Co, Pb, Cr and Ni were not available. Water absorption capacity was (300%±0.15%), oil absorption capacity was (358.44%±0.21%) and foaming stability was (3%±0.00%). The results of anti-nutritional analysis revealed that oxalate and phytic acid contents were (4.11±0.05) mg/100 g and (1.02±0.00) mg/100 g respectively and that these values fell within nutritionally accepted values. Tannin was not detected in C. forda. C. forda, a rich source of animal nutrients, usable in human diets and animal feeds formulations.

Adult (ADS) and larva stages of palm weevil Rhynchophorus phoenicis were analyzed for their nutritional potentials using proximate and mineral contents as indices. The early larva stage (ELS) contains the highest moisture content of 11.94% while ADS has the least value of 4.79%. The late larva stage (LLS) has the highest protein content of 10.51% while ADS contains 8.43%. Ash content is highest in ELS with a value of 2.37% and lowest in ADS with a value of 1.43%. ELS and LLS have the highest (22.14%) and lowest (17.22%) fibre contents respectively. The values of potassium, magnesium and iron in ELS were (455.00±21.21), (60.69±2.57) and (6.50±3.40) mg/kg while LLS recorded (457.50±10.61), (43.52±1.37) and (6.00±1.10) mg/kg and ADS recorded (372.50±24.75), (53.31±1.88) and (22.90±3.70) mg/kg. Chromium, phosphorus, nickel, calcium, lead, man- ganese and zinc were also detected. Copper was not detected in any of the samples. In all the developmental stages the protein solubilities were pH dependent with the minimum protein solubilities occurring at acidic pH while the maximum protein solu- bilities occurred at alkaline pH.

Introduction:The collodiaphyseal angle(CDA)is an angle formed between the femoral neck and femoral shaft *** is a vital determinant of femoral neck fracture as narrower angle is often used as a predictor of stress *** is also important in orthopedic treatment planning,especially hip replacement ***:This study was carried out to evaluate the CDA values among the Bini tribe and elucidate its ***:This study employed 200 anterior-posterior pelvic radiographs of the Bini tribe(100 males and 100 females)aged between 25 and 55 years obtained from selected radiological diagnostic centers in Benin City,Nigeria,after obtaining the Institutional Ethical *** were used to evaluate the right and left CDA as an angle formed by intersection of the femoral neck and shaft axes and measured using the *** were statistically analyzed using IBM-SPSS(version 20)with the mean,standard deviation,and range evaluated,and side and gender comparisons were done using t-test,and P0.05).Conclusion:The CDA can be employed as a morphometric indicator of sexual differences and for other clinical applications.

The gross anatomy and the histology of the alimentary tract of the larva of palm weevil, Rhynchophorus phoenicis were described in this study. The results showed that the alimentary system of the insect has three distinct partS, the foregut, midgut and hindgut. In the foregut are oesophagus, crop and proventriculus （gizzard）. The crop was the biggest part of the alimentary system, suggesting that the larva consumes big amount of food. Muscular proventriculus was present at the base of the foregut and it is the place where the food of the larva is pulverized. The midgut was the longest part of the alimentary tract. The anterior portion of the midgut is located in the thoracic region while the distal part which is coiled is embedded in the abdominal segments. The midgut epithelium is characterized by columnar cells, goblet cells, villi, microvilli, cappilaries and peritrophic membranes. The membrane helps to protect the midgut cells from damage from abrasive food particles. The hindgut forms the posterior part of the alimentary system and it consists of the ileum and rectum which terminates in the anus. There no villi but temporary folds of submucosa and mucosa layers. There are adipose cells, goblet cells, intestinal glands, circular and longitudinal muscles in this region.

Objective:The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between traditional cardiovascular risk factors and elevated plasma tHcy level in Nigerian ***:Thirty-six hypertensive patients were recruited with 36 age and sex-matched *** age,sex and anthropometric measurements including height,weight and body mass index(BMI)were *** total cholesterol,low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),triglycerides and tHcy were *** results of the two groups were ***:The mean total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly higher in the subjects than in the controls(P=0.01 and 0.03 respectively).On the other hand,means of HDL-C and triglycerides were not significantly different between the two groups(P=0.06 and 0.68 respectively).Mean total plasma tHcy was(12.95±4.9)μmol/L in hypertensive patients when compared with(11.29±3.6)μmol/L in the controls(P=0.09),however the mean tHcy was significantly higher in hypertensive patients who had stroke or myocardial infarction than those without these complications(one way Anova F=3.63,P=0.04).Significant positive correlation was seen between tHcy and systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,BMI and ***:The study suggests that elevated plasma tHcy may predict occurrence of cardiovascular complications in hypertensive individuals.

Fibrinolytic Activity of Some Nigerian Medicinal Plants

The first line drugs in the management of thromboernbolic diseases in Nigeria include Urokinase and Streptokinase. These drugs come with their attendant shortcomings. The need to source for cheap and accessible alternative therapy forms the basis of this study. The fibrinolytic potentials of 10 Nigerian medicinal plants： Anona senegalensis, Buchholzia coriaceae, Citrullus colocynthis, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius, Curculigo pilosa, Nicotiana tabaccum, Parinari curatellifolia, Pepperomia pellucida, Sida acuta and Xylopia aethiopica extracts were evaluated using water and streptokinase as negative and positive controls respectively. Trace metal （Cu, Fe, Ca and Zn） analysis of the plant extracts was carried out using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Methodology involved in vitro clot lysis method, the crude methanolic extract ofParinari curatellifolia （56.122%）, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius （48.385%）, Anona senegalensis （46.360%）, Xylopia aethiopica （43.205%） and Buchholzia coriaceae （27.062%） were found to have significant （P 〉 0.001） fibrinolytic activity. Maximum effect was exhibited by the positive standard： Streptokinase （60.20 ± 4.30%）, followed by Parinari curatellifolia （56.122 ± 3.86%）, our findings reveal that fibrinolytic activity is independent of elemental Copper or Iron content of the extracts. This study indicated that methanolic extracts of Parinari curatellifolia, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius, Anona senegalensis, Xylopia aethiopica and Buchholzia coriaceae could serve as cheap and accessible alternative.

Basal Cell Carcinoma: Experience in a Teaching Hospital, Calabar-South Nigeria

Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest malignancy among Caucasians in Europe, North America, and Australia. This study attempted to identify the prevalence, risk factors, and outcome of management of this problem in our region. Methods: All the patients with histologic diagnosis of BCC presenting to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar during the study period January 2000 to December 2009 were evaluated. Results: One hundred and fifty two patients (136 blacks, 16 albinos) were afflicted with skin malignancy, squamous cell carcinoma and BCC totaled 70 [SCC – 62, BCC – 8], and malignant melanoma (MM) – 16. Of the 8 patients, (3 males and 5 females, mean age 43 years, range 21-65 years) observed with BCC lesions, 2 (25%) were darkly pigmented and 6 (75%) were albinos. Most of the albinos who presented 3 decades before the darkly pigmented ranged in age from 21-60 years (mean 35.7 years). The lesions afflicted the head and neck region, 9 (82%), while 2 (18%) were observed on the upper limb. All the patients had excision with satisfactory results during the period of follow up that ranged from 6 months to 3 years (mean 13 months). Conclusion: BCC is an uncommon lesion in our region. Albinism and solar radiation were identified risk factors. Most of the albinos presented 3 decades earlier than the darkly pigmented. Early institution of preventive measures, early diagnosis, and treatment would result in better outcome.

This study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective and ameliorative effects of aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera (MO) leaves on the histologyof liver and hepatic reticular fibres integrity of adult Wistar rats following lead-induced hepatotoxicity. Twenty four adult Wistar rats, weighing 180 - 220 g, randomly assigned into four groups of six animals each were used for the study. Lead and Moringa oleifera were given orally to the rats. 24 hours after the last administration, animals were sacrificed, blood obtained by cardiac puncture and liver excised, fixed in 10% phosphate buffered formalin for histological and histochemical analysis. The activities of aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were used as markers of hepatotoxicity and catalase (CAT) activity were used as marker to evaluate the anti-oxidant status of the tissue. Result showed that lead treatment increased markers of hepatic damage (ALT, AST and ALP) and decreased CAT activities. Histological studies reveal alterations of hepatic structure including hepatocytic vacuolations, sinuosoidal congestion and loss of reticular fibres following lead treatment. Treatment with MO prevented and reversed lead induced hepatic damage. In conclusion, this study shows that Moringa oleifera leaf extract has an appreciable ability to prevent hepatotoxicity caused by lead, partly as result of its chemical constituents which has hepatoprotective properties.
