The aim of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of aluminum （A1） on the model organism-Drosophila melanogaster. The study is especially concerned with the effects of aluminum on the fruit fly＇s development, life span, and circadian rhythm in rest and activity. Flies were exposed to aluminum in concentrations from 40 to 280 mg/kg in rearing media or the flies were raised on control medium. Moreover, the life span of insects exposed to aluminum containing 40, 120, or 240 mg/kg of A1 in the medium, only during their larval development, during the whole life cycle and only in their adult life was tested. To check if aluminum and aging cause changes in D. melanogaster behavior, the locomotor activity of flies at different ages was recorded. Results showed that aluminum is toxic in concentrations above 160 mg/kg in the rearing medium. Depending on A1 concentration and time of exposure, the life span of the flies was shortened. At intermediate concentrations （120 mg/kg）, however, A1 had a stimulating effect on males increasing their life span and level of locomotor activity. At higher concentration the aluminum exposure increased or decreased the level of locomotor activity ofD. melanogaster depending on age of flies. In addition, in the oldest insects reared on aluminum supplemented media and in mid-aged flies reared on the highest concentration of A1 the daily rhythm of activity was disrupted.

The purpose of this paper is to：（1） explain what the historical origins of the world-systems concept are; （2） present the background for building the Washington Consensus; （3） attempt to answer if the Beijing Consensus can be interpreted as an alternative to the Washington Consensus; （4） attempt to answer if the world- systems concept is applicable to the current engagement of China in Africa. The world-systems concept provides a useful framework for research in international relations, thanks to both its methodological and theoretical assumptions. As it urges for treating social sciences as an interconnected system, i.e. it believes there is a link between sociology, economics, anthropology and the political sciences, it enables studying the reality of current international relations. Chinese presence in Sub- Saharan Africa should be seen from different points of view, as it affects most spheres of the state： it influences the economics and societies of the African countries （e.g. employment, migration, environment）, as well as politics （e.g. elections in Zambia in 2011 BBC http：//***/news/world-africa- 14952240, 2011）. Thus, the multi-dimensional analysis provided by the worldsystems theory, though not free of drawbacks （e.g. lack of a detailed analysis of each variable）, allows a comprehensive and holistic look at the issue of Chinese engagement in Africa. In terms of theoretical assumptions, its focus on system as a whole （which can be both studied at domestic and international levels） provides a basis for conducting studies at a regional level, treating Sub-Saharan Africa as the study＇s object. The classic world-systems concept defines world economy as driven by the cores＇ domination on the peripheries （described also as North-South division）. Most countries in sub-Saharan Africa fit into the scheme of world-systems analysis as the peripheries, but China cannot be treated as a core state： it is a semiperiphery, as described by Wallerstein, and repres

We report the preparation and encapsulation properties of stimuli-responsive nanocapsules, self-assembled by the noncovalent interactions of cyclodextrin- appended polymers （host） and complementary ferrocene or azobenzene carriers （guest）. The encapsulation process was significantly accelerated by applying （electro） chemical or light stimulus, enabling the easier and faster diffusion of guest molecules through the polymer layers. The nanocapsules were characterized by dynamic light scattering, confocal microscopy, ESEM, AFM, W-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. The encapsulation and release properties of the nanocapsules were reversible and could be repeated several times, indicating that the prepared nanoassemblies are very stable.

Pattern separation keeps items distinct in memory and is mediated by the hippocampus.A relationship between hippocampal function and diet quality has been suggested by findings in both humans and *** the present study,rats were fed over seven generations a diet containing increased amounts of sugar and saturated fatty acids,reduced levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and an increased ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids(“Western”diet).Spatial pattern separation(or local discrimination)performance of these animals was compared with that of rats fed a standard diet.A separation-dependent difference between the standard and Western diet groups was found in the number of discriminations performed in the pattern separation task,with rats of the“Western”group performing fewer *** present results suggest that behavioral assessment of spatial pattern separation can detect effects of dietary interventions in rats and that pattern separation can be impaired by transgenerational administration of a“Western”*** studies should determine which components of this diet induce the memory impairments related to the *** translational relevance of these findings in regard to mental disorders such as dementia and depression needs to be investigated.

AIM To evaluate the association of IFNL3(IL28B) SNP rs4803217 with severity of disease and treatment outcome in chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS The study enrolled 196 CHC Polish patients(82 women and 114 men in age 20-64) infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotype 1. They were treatment na?ve and qualified to pegylated interferon alpha(PEG-IFN-α) and ribavirin(RBV) therapy. The analyzed baseline parameters included: degree of inflammation, stage of fibrosis, viral load as well as alanine aminotransferase(ALT), asparagine aminotransferase(AST) and total bilirubin(TBIL). The analysis of response to therapy included: sustained virological response(SVR), defined as undetectable serum HCV RNA level six month after completion of 48-wk therapy, and relapse, defined as achieving undetectable viral load at the end of treatment but not SVR. HCV genotyping and HCV RNA quantification were performed using commercially available tests. DNA was isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells or from buccal cell swabs. In addition to rs4803217, also single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)(rs12979860, rs8099917 and rs12980275) of known significance in predicting of HCV clearance were analyzed. SNPs were determined by high resolution melt analysis and confirmed by sequencing of amplicons. RESULTS Frequency of rs4803217 genotypes in studied group was as follows: 27.55%; 54.59% and 17.86% for CC, CA and AA, respectively. The rs4803217 SNP, similar to other analyzed SNPs, was not associated with severity of CHC(grade of inflammation, stage of fibrosis, baseline viral load as well as biochemical parameters: ALT, AST, TBIL). It was demonstrated that the rs4803217 C allele is associated with SVR(C vs A: P < 0.0001; dose of C allele: P = 0.0002) and nonrelapse(C vs A: P = 0.001; dose of C allele: P = 0.002). Polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs),particularly the omega-3 PUFAs,are thought to be involved in neuronal processes,to play a role in neurodevelopmental disorders and to be important for the integrity of central nervous system *** present study investigated the effects of nutritional omega-3 PUFAs on attentional functions and impulsive behavior in Wistar *** this purpose,female Wistar rats were fed an omega-3 deficient diet over several generations,and the dams of the seventh generation were randomly assigned to two diet groups and fed an omega-3 deficient or an omega-3 sufficient *** addition,a group of previously untreated dams was fed an omega-3 sufficient *** male offspring of these three diet groups were tested using an established paradigm for the assessment of attention and impulsive behavior,i.e.a modified version of the five-choice-serial-reaction-time task(5CSRTT).The present data show that the deficiency of omega-3 PUFAs over generations led to substantial changes in attentional processes and impulsive *** impairments associated with an omega-3 deficiency were partly corrected by treatment with the omega-3 sufficient diet in the last generation of the omega-3 deficient group which showed substantial improvements in attention *** there were no significant effects of dietary modifications on psychomotor activity levels,there was some evidence for changes in impulsive *** conclusion,transgenerational dietary changes in the availability of omega-3 PUFAs led to changes in attentional processes and impulsive behavior in rats,supporting the hypothesis that omega-3 PUFAs play a role in cognitive and behavioral *** present findings offer a promising approach in the investigation of the role of omega-3 PUFAs in a variety of cognitive and behavioral domains.

Mechanical Properties of Cement Mortar Containing Fine-Grained Fraction of Fly Ashes

This paper presents the effect of fly ash grain-size fractions on Portland-fly ash cement hydration and its properties. Siliceous fly ashes of size fraction of 0 - 16 and 16 - 32 μm, separated from initial fly ash samples from 1st, 2nd and 3rd hopper in ESP system, were analysed. Cement hydration was investigated by determination of hydration heat and content of Ca(OH)2 and C3S in cement samples. Water to cement ratio and initial setting time of cement pastes as well as compressive strength and microstructure of cement mortars were also analyzed. Results showed that the same amount of the same size ash fraction can give cement of lower or higher early strength and its lower or higher increase with time. Incorporation of 20 wt% of ash fraction of 0 - 16 μm can produce Portland-fly ash cement CEM II/A-V of strength class 42.5R (from 2nd hopper) or 52.5N (from 3rd hopper). Cement containing 40 wt% of ash fraction of 0 - 16 μm from 2nd and 3rd hopper can be classified as pozzolanic cements CEM IV/A-V of strength class 42.5 and normal or rapid early strength, respectively. Different development of strength of cement with addition of the same size ash fraction separated from the initial ash sample from the next hopper in ESP system is connected with higher depolymerization degree of SiO4 units in ash glass, resulting from the greater amount of AlO4 units replacing SiO4 units. Ash fraction of 16 - 32 μm shows lower depolymerisation of glass network and as a consequence lower hydration degree of C3S to portlandite and calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H).

Erythroprotein-producing human hepatocellular carcinoma receptors （Eph receptors） compose a subfamily of transmembrane protein-tyrosine kinases receptors that takes part in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Eph family receptor-interacting proteins （Ephrins） are ligands for those receptors. Eph/ephrin system is responsible for the cytoskeleton activity, cell adhesion, intercellular connection, cellular shape as well as cell motility. It affects neuron development and functioning, bone and glucose homeostasis, immune system and correct function of enterocytes. Moreover Eph/ephrin system is one of the crucial ones in angiogenesis and lymphangJogenesis. With such a wide range of impact it is clear that disturbed function of this system leads to pathology. Eph/ephrin system is involved in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Although the idea of participation of ephrin in carcinogenesis is obvious, the exact way remains unclear because of complex bi-directional signaling and cross-talks with other pathways. Further studies are necessary to find a new target for treatment.
