Contamination of Water for Domestic Use and Human Consumption by Heavy Metals Derived from Mining Activity in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico

Research was done with the objective of evaluating the quality of water supplied to the potable water system in Hidalgo Del Parral, which comes from two main supply sources： wells from ＂Valle del Verano＂, which provide water to the east side of the city, and the Water Treatment Plant, which receives water from different mines and supplies the west side of the city. When this plant is overcome on its capacity of treatment, a part of the water from the mines is fed directly to the northwest part of the city. The metals lead （Pb）, chromium （Cr）, cadmium （Cd）, zinc （Zn）, and arsenic （As） were analyzed by atomic absorption （AA） technique, based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency （EPA） Method 7000B （Revision 2, February 2007）. The digestion process was done according to the guidelines established in Method NMX-AA-051-SCFI-2001, Analysis of Water-Determination of Metals by Atomic Absorption, developed by the National Standardization Technical Committee for Environmental Protection （Mexico）. The samples were collected from the following points： 13 wells and 2 re-pumping stations of ＂Valle del Verano＂, the inlet and outlet of the Water Treatment Plant, and domestic faucets. The east side of the city, supplied by the wells of ＂Valle del Verano＂, is metal-pollution free. The water that comes from the mines contains high concentrations of As, Zn, Cd and Pb, with levels that can get to 0.12, 32.6, 0.26 and 3.5 mg/L, respectively. This water pollution generated by mining can be concluded from the high levels found in the domestic samples in which, for several points, the concentrations exceed the parameters set by the current guideline. According to the results, it is vital to set a plan of remediation for the water that comes from the mines, because there is a great risk for health in the consumotion of this water.

Oregano and Composite Substrates： A Mitigation Alternative for Heavy Metals Emission from Tailings Deposits in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico

The Mexican oregano ＂Lippia berlandieri Shauer＂ is a versatile plant, for multiple purposes and high potential adaptative capabilities. To evaluate the possibility to use oregano as a cover surface on tailings deposits and thereby mitigate the emission of particulate material with metals content, an experiment was carried out comparing the plant growing rate over a period of six-month in four substrates： tailings, vermicompost, ＂soil＂ of the region and a mixture of ＂tailings plus vermicompost＂. The statistical analysis shows a significant difference between treatments, resulting in the ＂soil＂ substrate with the best performance, followed by the mixture of＂tailings plus vermicompost＂ treatment. The low permeability oftailings strongly affects the adaptability and growth of the oregano plant; however, the adaptation possibilities increase in the mixture oftailings with vermicompost or ＂soil＂ of the region.

The degree of adaptability and phytoremediation potential of the plant species, Zacate Garrapata, Zacate Banderita, Chivatillo, Oregano, Chamizo and Sotol were evaluated on different substrates (S) composed of tailing (JM) and agricultural land (TA) in different proportions in mass: S1 = 100% TA, S2 = 100% JM, S3 = 50% TA and 50 % JM, S4 = 25% JM and 75% TA, S5 = 75% JM and 25% TA. With the combination of species and substrates, 30 treatments were generated. The heavy metals evaluated were Pb, As, Cu. Fe, Cr and Zn, in root, leaf and stem. The results showed significant statistical differences (p < 0.05), with the Sotol and Zacate Garrapata species being the ones with the highest degree of adaptability and accumulation of heavy metals in interaction with S3. These two species can be used in the remediation of open pit tailing dam.

Immediate–Early(IE) gene regulation of cytomegalovirus:IE1-and pp71-mediated viral strategies against cellular defenses

Three crucial hurdles hinder studies on human cytomegalovirus(HCMV): strict species specificity, differences between in vivo and in vitro infection, and the complexity of gene regulation. ever since the sequencing of the whole genome was first accomplished, functional studies on individual genes have been the mainstream in the CMV field. Gene regulation has therefore been elucidated in a more detailed fashion. However, viral gene regulation is largely controlled by both cellular and viral components. In other words, viral gene expression is determined by the virus–host interaction. Generally, cells respond to viral infection in a defensive pattern; at the same time, viruses try to counteract the cellular defense or else hide in the host(latency). Viruses evolve effective strategies against cellular defense in order to achieve replicative success. Whether or not they are successful, cellular defenses remain in the whole viral replication cycle: entry, immediate–early(IE) gene expression, early gene expression, DNA replication, late gene expression, and viral egress. Many viral strategies against cellular defense, and which occur in the immediate–early time of viral infection, have been documented. In this review, we will summarize the documented biological functions of IE1 and pp71 proteins, especially with regard to how they counteract cellular intrinsic defenses.
