AIM:To study the outcome of patients undergoing surgical resection of the bowel for sustained radiation-induced damage intractable to conservative ***:During a 7-year period we operated on 17 cases (5 male,12 female) admitted to our surgical department with intestinal radiation injury (IRI).They were originally treated for a pelvic malignancy by surgical resection followed by postoperative *** follow-up,they developed radiation enteritis requiring surgical treatment due to failure of conservative ***:IRI was located in the terminal ileum in 12 patients,in the rectum in 2 patients,in the descending colon in 2 patients,and in the cecum in one *** patients had resection of the affected region(s).There were no postoperative deaths,while 3 cases presented with postoperative complications (17.7%).All patients remained free of symptoms without evidence of recurrence of IRI for a median follow-up period of 42 mo (range,6-96 mo).CONCLUsION:We report a favorable outcome without IRI recurrence of 17 patients treated by resection of the diseased bowel segment.

We review the role of endothelin (ET) A-receptors (R) on the coronary circulation. ET-1 maintains the normal coronary artery tone. ET-1 plasma levels are increased during and after coronary angioplasty and this increase is related to myocardial ischaemia rather than to mechanical artery injury. ETAR antagonists inhibit coronary artery vasoconstriction induced by ET release after coronary angioplasty in humans. ET promotes neointimal formation and ETAR antagonism has been shown to inhibit restenosis after angioplasty in the animal model but not in humans. ETAR blockade increases coronary blood flow, dilates distal coronary arterial segments and decreases coronary vascular resistance. Coronary collaterals are less sensitive than other coronary vessels to ET-1. ETAR blockade decreases collateral blood flow and, consequently, perfusion of the ischemic myocardium.

AIM： To evaluate different types of treatment for sigmoid volvulus and clarify the role of endoscopic intervention versus surgery. METHODs： A retrospective review of the clinical presentation and imaging characteristics of 33 sigrnoid volvulus patients was presented, as well as their diagnosis and treatment, in combination with a literature review. REsULTs： In 26 patients endoscopic detorsion was achieved after the first attempt and one patient died because of uncontrollable sepsis despite prompt operative treatment. seven patients had unsuccessful endoscopic derotation and were operated on. On two patients with gangrenous sigrnoid, Hartmann＇s procedure was performed. In five patients with viable colon, a sigmoid resection and primary anastomosis was carried out. Three patients had a lavage ＂on table＂ prior to anastomosis, while in the remaining 2 patients a diverting stoma was performed according to the procedure of the first author. Ten patients were operated on during their first hospital stay （3 to 8 d after the deflation）. All patients had viable colon; 7 patients had a sigmoid resection and primary anastomosis, 2 patients had sigrnoidopexy and one patient underwent a near-total colectomy. Two .patients （sigmoidectomy- sigmoidopexy） had recurrences of volvulus 43 and 28 mo after the initial surgery. Among 15 patients who were discharged from the hospital after non-operative deflation, 3 patients were lost to follow-up. Of the remaining 12 patients, 5 had a recurrence of volvulus at a time in between 23 d and 14 mo. All the five patients had been operated on and in four a gangrenous sigmoid was found. Three patients died during the 30 d postoperative course. The remaining seven patients were admitted to our department for elective surgery. In these patients, 2 subtotal colectomies, 3 sigmoid resections and 2 sigmoidopexies were carried out. One patient with subtotal colectomy died. Taken together of the results, it is evident that after 17 elective operations

AIM： To investigate the probable role of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 （sTREM-1） in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease （IBD）.METHODs： Fifty-eight patients were enrolled; nineteen healthy volunteers served as controls; 8 patients were diagnosed with Crohn＇s disease, and 31 with ulcerative colitis, Clinical and endoscopic activity indexes of patients with Crohn＇s disease and ulcerative colitis respectively were estimated, Upon admission blood was sampled; sTREM-1 and TNFα were measured by an immunoassay and malondialdehyde （IDA） by the thiobarbitourate assay, after passage through an HPLC system,REsULTs： Median ± sE of TNFα of controls, patients with Crohn＇s disease and patients with ulcerative colitis were 6.02 ± 3.94, 7.98 ± 5.08 （P = Ns vs controls）, and 8.45 ± 4.15 ng/L （P = 0.018 vs controls） respectively. Respective values of sTREM-1 were 53.31 ± 32.93, 735.10 ± 197.17 （P = 0.008 vs controls） and 435.82 ± 279.71 ng/L （P = 0.049 vs controls）, sTREM-1 was positively correlated with Crohn＇s disease activity index and clinical and endoscopic activity indexes of ulcerative colitis （P = 0.002, 0.001 and 0.009, respectively）, sTREM-1 of patients with ulcerative colitis was positively correlated with TNFα （P = 0.001）.CONCLUsION： sTREM-1 seems to behave as a novel mediator in IBD in correlation with the degree of the intlammatory reaction of the intestinal mucosa.

This article investigates the political caricatures assembly of some major ‘players' on the contemporary economic-political EU stage, and the semiotic-linguistic and visual rhetorical tools used to achieve this assembly. This is achieved through an intersemiotic analysis of the aspects of a small corpus of political caricatures in English and French newspapers that were republished in Greek newspapers in the aftermath of Greece's first memorandum in 2010 and within the ongoing discussion about the(un)predictability of Grexit terror. A rationale for the combination of intersemiotic and interlingual analysis and a discussion of the nature and functions of the semiotic complexity of political caricatures are provided. The analysis, drawing upon the notions of intersemiosis and(un)predictability in translation, addresses the verbal and visual aspects of the caricatures against a cross-cultural background. The analysis of four caricatures elaborates on intersemiotic aspects of the sample, specifically on verbal-visual interactions as these are juxtaposed on both the source and target culture, toward an understanding of the messages of the caricatures, the tools used to convey these messages and how they contribute to the ongoing discussion about the(un)predictable roles of Greece in/outside Europe.

The current paper presents the evaluation results of a monitoring system, developed within NOBEL （Neighbourhood Oriented Brokerage Electricity） project. NOBEL is an EU funded project of the 7th Framework Programme that developed a pilot monitoring and energy brokerage system, within a local electricity network, aiming to the optimization of energy usage by reducing consumption and maximizing REs （renewable energy sources） usage on neighbourhood level. A holistic evaluation methodology was followed encompassing all aspects, focusing on the enhancement of energy efficiency due to NOBEL system. In specific, indicators related to energy and monetary impacts were analysed and finally assessed. The system was tested through pilot trials in Alginet, a village in spain. NOBEL managed to achieve total energy savings of 12%, contributing also to respective emissions reduction and to economic benefits for brokerage platform participants. Analytic results and conclusions are presented in the current manuscript that will assess the project＇s system overall performance.

The debate concerning abortion abounds in miraculous narratives. Judith Jarvis Thomson has contrived the most celebrated set among related ones, to wit the ＂violinist analogy,＂ the ＂Good samaritan＂ narrative, and the ＂Henry Fonda＂ allegory, by virtue of which, she intends, on the one hand, to argue that women＇s right to autonomy outweighs the alleged fetus＇s right to life, and on the other, to prove that no positive moral duties can be derived towards other persons alone from the fact that a moral agent is ascribed certain rights. What this short paper endeavors to prove is that Thomson＇s argumentation by analogy is a weak one, since neither the number nor the relevance of similarities invoked is adequate or satisfactory, while crucial parameters concerning the morality of abortion are being totally overlooked.

The singular Integral Operators Method (s.I.O.M.) is applied to the determination of the free-surface profile of an un-steady flow over a spillway, which defines a classical hydraulics problem in open channel flow. Thus, with a known flow rate Q, then the velocities and the elevations are computed on the free surface of the spillway flow. For the numerical evaluation of the singular integral equations both constant and linear elements are used. An application is finally given to the determination of the free-surface profile of a special spillway and comparing the numerical results with corresponding results by the Boundary Integral Equation Method (B.I.E.M.) and by using experiments.

Fractures of the lesser tuberosity of the humerus are typically met in combination with other injuries of the shoulder. Case reports of isolated lesser tuberosity fractures are particularly rare and, consequently,therapeutic protocols have not yet been completely clarified. Conservative as well as surgical treatment has been recommended, while several operative techniques have been applied. We present a case of a 39-yearold man with an isolated lesser tuberosity fracture who was treated surgically in our institution. Due to fracture comminution, a two-level reconstruction technique with headless screws and buttress plate was applied. As far as we know, this method of fixation of this type of fracture has not been previously described in the *** patient tolerated the procedure well and excellent results were obtained at the latest follow-up.
