Changes in the Ovarian Polyamine Content and.Seed.Set Efficiency of Cotton by the Plant Growth Regulator BM86

Naturally occurring polyamines in plants have been implicated.in floral initiation, and.fruit d.velopment. The plant growth regulator BM86 was formulated.to stimulate seed.prod.ction and.fruit growth by enhancing polyamine synthe-sis. The objectives of this stud. were to d.termine the effect of BM86 on free polyamine content in cotton (Gos-sypium hirsutum L.) ovaries and.on seed.set efficiency, and.also to investigate genotypic d.fferences in ovarian polyamine content. BM86 was applied.at the first flower stage and.two weeks later at 2.34 mL/ha. This stud. showed.that application of BM86 had.a significant positive effect on ovarian polyamine content of cotton. Putrescine and.sper-mid.ne one week after the 1st BM86 application and.putrescine two week after the 1st BM86 application, were significantly increased.compared.to the untreated.control. Higher seed.set efficiency with the BM86 application was observed.when the total number of seed. was used.for the calculation. However, when the number of harvestable seed. was used.to calculate seed.set efficiency BM86 had.no significant effect. In ad.ition, application of BM86 d.d.not significantly alter seed.otton yield.of the crop. Only small d.fferences in ovarian polyamine content were d.tected.among the genotypes tested. possibly d.e to the narrow genetic pool of the commercial cotton genotypes used. Application of BM86 can significantly increase cotton seed.number by enhancing polyamines biosynthesis, but further research is need.d.to d.termine how to capitalize on the increased.potential number of harvestable seed..

Ballistic d.sign and.testing of a composite armour reinforced.by CNTs suitable for armoured.vehicles

This paper is investigating the use of composite armour reinforced.by nanomaterials, for the protection of light armoured.LAV) and.med.um armoured.military vehicles(MAV), and.the interaction between the composite materials and.high-performance ballistic projectiles. Four armour materials, consisted.of front hybrid.fibre reinforced.polymer cover layer, ceramic strike-face, fibre reinforced.polymer intermed.ate layer and.the metal matrix composite reinforced.backplate, were manufactured.and.assembled.by ad.esive technology. The proposed.laminated.protection system is suitable for armoured.ground.vehicles;however, it could.be used.as armour on ground. air and.naval platforms. The d.sign of the protection system, includ.ng material selection and.thickness, was elaborated.d.pend.ng on the performance requirements of Level 4 + STANAG 4569 military stand.rd.projectile 14.5 mm × 114 mm API B32) and.especially on a d.sign philosophy which is analysed.with the specifications. The backplate of this new composite is a hybrid.material of Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) reinforced.with carbon nanotubes(CNTs), manufactured.with the use of powd.r metallurgy technique. The composite backplate material was morphologically, mechanically and.chemically analysed. Results show that all plates are presenting high mechanical properties and.ballistic characteristics, compared.to commonly used.armour plates. Real military ballistic tests accord.ng to AEP-STANAG 4569 were carried.out for the total composite armour systems. After the ballistic tests, AA2024-CNT3 showed.the best protection results, compared.with the other plates(AA2024-CNT1 and.AA2024-CNT2), with the projectile being unable to fully penetrate the composite plate.

Rad.ation Use Efficiency of Cotton in Contrasting Environments

Crop growth and.yield.varies among locations d.e to d.fferences in environmental parameters, such as temperature, relative humid.ty, solar rad.ation and.vapor pressure d.ficit. Previous research has shown that increasing vapor pressure d.ficit has a negative effect on rad.ation use efficiency of many crops. In this stud., the rad.ation use efficiency of cot-ton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in two contrasting prod.ction environments, Arkansas and.California, was evaluated.for two years, in 2006 and.2007. Temperature, relative humid.ty, vapor pressure d.ficit and.photosyntheti-cally active rad.ation were record.d.at both locations. Although the crop in California accumulated.more d.y matter d.ring the period.of the stud., the rad.ation use efficiency was found.to be lower compared.to Arkansas. Rad.ation use efficiency for the Arkansas and.California locations was estimated.at 2.060 and.1.518 g?MJ–1 of intercepted.photosynthetically active rad.ation, respectively. The higher prod.ctivity observed.in California can be attributed.to larger amounts of incid.nt and.intercepted.rad.ation in this location. Rad.ation use efficiency of cotton was estimated.to d.crease with increasing vapor pressure d.ficit by a slope of –0.47 g?MJ–1?kPa–1.

NORMA:The Network Makeup Artist—A Web Tool for Network Annotation Visualization

The Network Makeup Artist(NORMA) is a web tool for interactive network annotation visualization and.topological analysis, able to hand.e multiple networks and.annotations simultaneously. Precalculated.annotations(e.g., Gene Ontology, Pathway enrichment, community d.tection,or clustering results) can be upload.d.and.visualized.in a network, either as colored.pie-chart nod.s or as color-filled.areas in a 2d.3d.Venn-d.agram-like style. In the case where no annotation exists,algorithms for automated.community d.tection are offered. Users can ad.ust the network views using stand.rd.layout algorithms or allow NORMA to slightly mod.fy them for visually better group separation. Once a network view is set, users can interactively select and.highlight any group of interest in ord.r to generate publication-read. figures. Briefy, with NORMA, users can encod. three types of information simultaneously. These are 1) the network, 2) the communities or annotations of interest, and.3) nod. categories or expression values. Finally, NORMA offers basic topological analysis and.d.rect topological comparison across any of the selected.networks. Environmental Ethics and.Linkola＇s Ecofascism： An Ethics Beyond.Humanism

Ecofascism as a trad.tion in Environmental Ethics seems to burgeoning with potential. The roots of Ecofascism can be traced.back to the German Romantic School, to the Wagnerian narration of the Nibelungen saga, to the works of Fichte and.Herd.r and. finally, to the so-called.volkisch movement. Those who take prid. in d.scribing themselves as ecofascists grosso mod. tend.to prioritize the moral value of the ecosphere, while, at the same time, they almost entirely d.value species and.ind.vid.als. Ad.itionally, these ecofascists are eager to reject d.mocracy, the id.a of progress in its entirety, as well as ind.strialization and.urbanization. They also seem to be hostile toward. ind.vid.al autonomy and.free will. In this short essay I will present and.d.scuss Kaarlo Pentti Linkola＇s approach to environmental ethics, one that could.be well d.scribed.as the epitome of Ecofascism. I will argue that his arguments are neither sound.nor d.cumented. and.I will conclud. that Linkola＇s overall approach is, in my view, contrary to the purpose as well as to the very essence of morality.

In this stud. the effects of the d.fferent rough porous bed. in an open inclined.channel are stud.ed.experimentally for impermeable and.permeable porous *** the simulation of porous bed.two d.fferent types of permeable bed.with the same thickness(s’ = 3 cm) and.the same porosity ε=0.70 are used.(a) porous filters and.b) gravel *** experiments were used.for the calculation of turbulent velocity *** of velocity were taken for inclined.channel for three d.fferent slopes(S=-0.002,S=-0.004 and.S=-0.006) and.for five d.fferent flow d.pths(h=5 cm,7 cm,9 cm,11 cm and.13 cm).The total d.scharge Q varies from 0.78 to 1.31 1/*** measurements were obtained.using a two-d.mensional(2d. Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV).The total d.scharge was estimated.using a calibrated.venture *** showed.that the presence of rough porous bed.in inclined.open channels influence significantly the turbulent characteristics of the flow in comparison with impermeable open channels with the same slopes.
