Response to vernalization and photoperiod are the main determinants controlling the time to flowering in temperate cereals. While the individual genes that determine a plant's response to these environmental signals are well characterized, the combinatorial effect on flowering time of allelic variants for multiple genes remains unresolved. This study investigated the genetic control of flowering-time in a biparental population of spring barley, derived from a wide cross between a late-flowering European and an early-flowering North-American cultivar. While the major flowering time genes are not segregating in the Beka ×Logan cross, large variation in flowering was observed. We identified five QTL, with both parents found to contribute early alleles. The catalog of QTL discovered aligns with several candidate genes affecting flowering time in barley. The combination of particular alleles at HvCEN, HvELF3 and HvFT1 in Logan are responsible for the earliness of this cultivar. Interestingly, earliness for flowering could be further enhanced, with Beka found to contribute three early alleles, including a QTL colocating with a HvFD-like gene, suggesting that there are diverse aspects of the flowering-time pathway that have been manipulated in these two cultivars. Epistatic interactions between flowering-time QTL or candidate genes were observed in field data and confirmed under controlled conditions. The results of this study link photoperiod-dependent flowering-time genes with earliness per se genes into a single model, thus providing a unique framework that can be used by geneticists and breeders to optimize flowering time in barley.

Increasing the Burned Time and Mechanical Properties with New Mix As Flame Retardant Based in Hexametaphosphate of Sodium and Borax in Textile 100% Acrylic Fabrics

It has been worked with textile fabrics of Acrylic 100 % , that have as final use the Tapestry, this fabrics have been impregnated with a two products flame retardant: Commercial Retardant, which is formed by a combination of a resin polymeric and acid phosphoric and Borax (Na2B4O5(OH)4.8H2O) with Sodium Hexametaphosphate (Na16P14O43). These Retardants?? has the advantage of the fact that it can be applied to the substrates mixed with water in the relation 1:1, 1:2 or pure. In order to reduce the flammability, Textile fabrics are coated with flame retardants. The flame retardant capabilities, mechanical properties and structural characteristics of the textile fabrics before and after the use of these products were investigated throughout the special textile methods for inflammability and mechanical resistibility. After the use of the flame retardants the mechanical properties of the fabrics were improved or at least remained the same as compared to fabrics without any treatment. The use of Borax / Sodium Hexametaphosphate /Water results in the essential increase of combustion retardation time about 2 minutes as compared with 8 seconds for untreated fabrics.

Instability of the lumbar spine due to disc degeneration. A finite element simulation

Low back pain, which most common cause is degenerative disc disease, currently represents a serious problem due to its socio-economic repercussions. Different factors are involved in the degenerative process, being the most common: the loads on the spine, repeated flexion movements and individual genetic characteristics. Nowadays, there is no agreement on whether instability is the main cause of low back pain, or only one reason among many, and on whether increased spinal mobility, associated with instability, occurs either locally or at the lumbar spine as a whole. In this work, the simulation of disc degeneration is based on a finite element model of lumbar spine. A parametric study based on mechanical properties was established, for each lumbar spine movement, by evaluating the disc degeneration in 10% steps, from healthy disc to maximum degeneration. The results show as general trend a progressive mobility increase as the disc degeneration level raises. As main conclusion, disc degeneration causes increased mobility at all vertebral levels, with moderate values for incipient degeneration and much higher values for advanced degeneration, affecting more severely to the levels closest to degenerated disk. The great mobility increase detected at L5 could explain the instability detected as a clinical symptom.

Probability of Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures Assessment Based on DXA Measurements and Finite Element Simulation

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures represent major cause of disability, loss of quality of life and even mortality among the elderly population. Decisions on drug therapy are based on the assessment of risk factors for fracture, from bone mineral density measurements. The combination of biomechanical models with clinical studies could better estimate bone strength and support the specialists in their decision. A model to assess the probability of fracture, based on the Damage and Fracture Mechanics has been developed, evaluating the mechanical magnitudes involved in the fracture process from clinical bone mineral density measurements. The model is intended for simulating the degenerative process in the skeleton, with the consequent lost of bone mass and hence the decrease of its mechanical resistance which enables the fracture due to different traumatisms. Clinical studies were chosen, both in non-treatment conditions and receiving drug therapy, and fitted to specific patients according their actual bone mineral density measures. The predictive model is applied in a finite element simulation of the lumbar spine. The fracture zone would be determined according loading scenario (fall, impact, accidental loads, etc.), using the mechanical properties of bone obtained from the evolutionary model corresponding to the considered time. Bone mineral density evolution in untreated patients and in those under different treatments was analyzed. Evolutionary curves of fracture probability were obtained from the evolution of mechanical damage. The evolutionary curve of the untreated group of patients presented a marked increase of the fracture probability, while the curves of patients under drug treatment showed variable decreased risks, depending on the therapy type. The finite element model allowed obtaining detailed maps of damage and fracture probability, identifying high-risk local zones at vertebral body, which are the usual localization of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Two Years of Oceanographic and Meteorological Data from the UNAM Buoy Anchored at Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific

The paper analyzes oceanographic and meteorological data registered by an oceanographic buoy in the Mexican Pacific. In 2005 the Marine Science and Limnology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico moored an oceanographic buoy off the coast of Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific that transmitted data hourly from July 11, 2005 to November 15, 2007. The buoy recorded oceanographic (current speed and direction, conductivity, temperature, salinity, density, turbidity, pH, fluorescence, sea level, waves, and tides) and meteorological (wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, and pressure) data. Linear spectral analysis and wavelet analysis revealed annual, seasonal, and biweekly frequencies, as well as frequencies associated with the main tidal components, and those corresponding with inertial oscillations and Madden-Julian oscillations.
