AIm: To measure biochemical parameters in stomach biopsies and test their suitability as diagnostic biomarkers for gastritis and precancerous ***: Biopsies were obtained from the stomachs of two groups of patients(n = 40) undergoing fiberoptic endoscopy due to upper gastrointestinal symptoms. In the first group(n = 17), only the corpus region was examined. Biopsies were processed for microscopic examination and measurement of mitochondrial O2 consumption(cellular respiration), cellular adenosine triphosphate(ATP), glutathione(GSH), and caspase activity. In the second group of patients(n = 23), both corpus and antral regions were studied. Some biopsies were processed for microscopic examination, while the others were used for measurements of cellular respiration and GSH ***: microscopic examinations of gastric corpus biopsies from 17 patients revealed normal mucosae in 8 patients, superficial gastritis in 7 patients, and chronic atrophic gastritis in 1 patient. In patients with normal histology, the rate(mean ± SD) of cellular respiration was 0.17 ± 0.02 μmol/L O2 min-1 mg-1, ATP content was 487 ± 493 pmol/mg, and GSH was 469 ± 98 pmol/mg. Caspase activity was detected in 3 out of 8 specimens. The values of ATP and caspase activity were highly variable. The presence of superficial gastritis had insignificant effects on the measured biomarkers. In the patient with atrophic gastritis, cellular respiration was high andATP was relatively low, suggesting uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. In the second cohort of patients, the examined biopsies showed either normal or superficial gastritis. The rate of cellular respiration(O2. μmol/L min-1 mg-1) was slightly higher in the corpus than the antrum(0.18 ± 0.05 vs 0.15 ± 0.04, P = 0.019). The value of GSH was about the same in both tissues(310 ± 135 vs 322 ± 155, P = 0.692).CONCLUSION: The corpus mucosa was metabolically more active than the antrum tissue. We report the results of a survey for myxomycetes in the Chinese province of Xinjiang,covering the northern part of the Tarim basin and the eastern Tian-Shan *** in the hyperarid Tarim basin focused on monospecific Tugai forests;these are park-like stands of the phreatophyte Populus *** a transect from the Tarim basin to the mountains,trees vanish outside the basin,but reoccur at ca.1,400 m elevation as monospecific forests of Picea schrenkiana;the second focal area of the *** a total of 362 substrate samples(245 from the Tarim basin,177 from the mountains)we obtained 477 determinable records of myxomycetes,plus a total of 206 field collections,the latter almost exclusively from the spruce forests in the *** the 80 taxa recorded 53 are represented by field collections,and 32 were found in moist chamber cultures;with a very low overlap in species assemblages found in the field and in *** receiving less than 50 mm annual precipitation,corticolous myxomycetes were common in the Tugai forests,with Physarum pseudonotabile ***.,Didymium anellus,Echinostelium colliculosum and Protophysarum phloiogenum as the most common *** to the Tarim basin(21 taxa)the mountains were much richer in myxomycetes(75 taxa),although the diversity recovered from cultures was comparable(21 vs.28 taxa).most species from the mountains fruited on decaying spruce,often collected under or even inside the logs due to the extremely dry *** results suggest first that there is no lower limit of annual precipitation for myxomycetes,as long as at least some days with nightly dew fall allow these organisms to complete their life ***,the two examples of surprisingly diverse myxomycete assemblages from monospecific forests demonstrate,that species richness of this group is not necessarily connected with plant diversity of the *** survey is the most eastern of a large-scale study of myxomycete diversity throughout m

The use of botulinum toxin A in chemical component separation: a review of techniques and outcomes

Fascial closure is crucial for abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) but can be especially difficult in patients with massive ventral hernias or loss domain. Recently, botulinum toxin A (BTA) has been increasingly utilized as an adjunct in AWR to aid in fascial closure. This review aims to evaluate the current literature on the use of BTA in AWR to assess current treatment regimens, side effects, outcomes and complications. A literature search was performed, yielding 10 studies that met the inclusion criteria. There was a significant amount of heterogeneity in treatment regimens, with studies differing in BTA injection timing, dosage, concentration, and location. The majority of studies showed that injection of BTA preoperatively was able to augment abdominal wall musculature, with many showing a decrease in mean transverse defect size and high rates of successful fascial closure. No major complications were reported from BTA administration, with only mild side effects reported by some studies. The most common side effects include a weak cough or sneeze, bloating, and back pain, which generally all resolved prior to surgery. While BTA appears to be a promising adjunct for AWR, further investigation is needed to determine optimal patient selection and treatment regimens.

The Impact of Automation in Service Industries＂ An Empirical Study

Academic research into service industries has explored the characteristics of interpersonal interactions between employees and customers, but there are few studies addressing the issues of consumer interaction with technology and its influence on the objectives and results of the operations subsystem. This study examines the elements of the service encounter, and the changes automation originates in them and their relationships. The paper also examines changes in the elements and results of the operations subsystem, as a result of automation. We propose that the customer＇s relationship with employees and/or technology and automated systems for the service impact the objectives and results of the operations subsystem, all of which could have an effect on the company＇s competitive position. The empirical study is focused on four industries, namely, toll motorways, car parks, carwash and video/DVD rental companies, in an attempt to identify objectives that lead companies to implement automated processes affecting the customer＇s relationship with the company. The hypotheses generated are contrasted with a structural equation modelling. The results confirm that the customer＇s relationship with employees and automated systems for the service impacts the objectives and results of the operations subsystem. Also, the results show how automation can enable firms simultaneously to achieve acceptable levels of flexibility and productivity, two dimensions that have traditionally been considered opposites.

Plants need tight regulation of photosynthetic electron transport for survival and growth under environ- mental and metabolic conditions. For this purpose, the linear electron transport （LET） pathway is supple- mented by a number of alternative electron transfer pathways and valves. In Arabidopsis, cyclic electron transport （CET） around photosystem I （PSI）, which recycles electrons from ferrodoxin to plastoquinone, is the most investigated alternative route. However, the interdependence of LET and CET and the relative importance of CET remain unclear, largely due to the difficulties in precise assessment of the contribution of CET in the presence of LET, which dominates electron flow under physiological conditions. We there- fore generated Arabidopsis mutants with a minimal water-splitting activity, and thus a low rate of LET, by combining knockout mutations in Psb01, PsbP2, PsbQ1, PsbQ2, and PsbR loci. The resulting 45 mutant is viable, although mature leaves contain only ~20% of wild-type naturally less abundant Psb02 protein. 45 plants compensate for the reduction in LET by increasing the rate of CET, and inducing a strong non-photochemical quenching （NPQ） response during dark-to-light transitions. To identify the molecular origin of such a high-capacity CET, we constructed three sextuple mutants lacking the qE component of NPQ （45 npq4-1）, NDH-mediated CET （45 crr4-3）, or PGR5-PGRLl-mediated CET （45 pgrS）. Their analysis revealed that PGR5-PGRLl-mediated CET plays a major role in ~pH formation and induction of NPQ in C3 plants. moreover, while pgr5 dies at the seedling stage under fluctuating light conditions, 45 pgr5 plants are able to survive, which underlines the importance of PGR5 in modulating the intersystem electron transfer.
