The potential application of red mud and soil mixture as additive to the surface layer of a landfill cover system

Red mud, the by-product of aluminum production, has been regarded as a problematic residue all over the world. Its storage involves risks as evidenced by the Ajka red mud spill,an accident in Hungary where the slurry broke free, flooding the surrounding areas. As an immediate remediation measure more than 5 cm thick red mud layer was removed from the flooded soil surface. The removed red mud and soil mixture（RmSm） was transferred into the reservoirs for storage. In this paper the application of RmSm is evaluated in a field study aiming at re-utilizing waste, decreasing cost of waste disposal and providing a value-added product. The purpose was to investigate the applicability of RmSm as surface layer component of landfill cover systems. The field study was carried out in two steps： in lysimeters and in field plots. The RmSm was mixed at ratios ranging between 0 and 50% w/w with low quality subsoil（LQS） originally used as surface layer of an interim landfill cover. The characteristics of the LQS ＋ RmSm mixtures compared to the subsoil（LQS） and the RmSm were determined by physical–chemical, biological and ecotoxicological methods. The addition of RmSm to the subsoil（LQS） at up to 20% did not result any ecotoxic effect, but it increased the water holding capacity. In addition, the microbial substrate utilization became about triple of subsoil（LQS） after 10 months. According to our results the RmSm mixed into subsoil（LQS） at20% w/w dose may be applied as surface layer of landfill cover systems.

This study focuses on the novel forecasting method(SutteARImA)and its application in predicting Infant mortality Rate data in *** undertakes a comparison of the most popular andwidely used four forecasting methods:ARImA,Neural Networks Time Series(NNAR),Holt-Winters,and *** data used were obtained from the website of the World *** data consisted of the annual infant mortality rate(per 1000 live births)from 1991 to *** determine a suitable and best method for predicting Infantmortality rate,the forecasting results of these four methods were compared based on the mean absolute percentage error(mAPE)and mean squared error(mSE).The results of the study showed that the accuracy level of SutteARImA method(mAPE:0.83%andmSE:0.046)in predicting Infantmortality rate in Indonesia was smaller than the other three forecasting methods,specifically the ARImA(0.2.2)with a mAPE of 1.21%and a mSE of 0.146;the NNAR with a mAPE of 7.95%and a mSE of 3.90;and the Holt-Winters with amAPE of 1.03%and amSE:of 0.083.

Determining indoor air quality and identifying the origin of odour episodes in indoor environments

A methodology for identifying volatile organic compounds （VOCs） and determining air quality of indoor air has been developed. The air samples are collected using pump samplers by the inhabitants when they perceive odorous and/or discomfort episodes. Glass multi-sorbent tubes are connected to the pump samplers for the retention of VOC. The analysis is performed by automatic thermal desorption （ATD） coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC/mS）. This methodology can be applied in cases of sick building syndrome （SBS） evaluation, in which building occupants experience a series of varied symptoms that appear to be linked to time spent in the building. Chemical pollutants concentrations （e.g., VOC） have been described to contribute to SBS. To exemplify the methodology, a qualitative determination and an evaluation of existing VOC were performed in a dwelling where the occupants experienced the SBS symptoms. Higher total VOC （TVOC） levels were detected during episodes in indoor air （1.33 ±1.53 mg/m^3） compared to outdoor air （0.71± 0.46 mg/m^3）. The concentrations of individual VOCs, such as ethanol, acetone, isopropanol, 1-butanol, acetic acid, acetonitrile and 1-methoxy-2-propanol, were also higher than the expected for a standard dwelling. The external source of VOC was found to be an undeclared activity of storage and manipulation of solvents located at the bottom of a contiguous building.

Walls' cooling of aeronautic propeller combustion chamber is performed with the injection, through the combustion chamber wall, of a part of the air coming from compressors placed upstream. measurements of the wall thermal fields are made by infrared thermography along the injection wall. This injection wall is pierced by 9 rows of 8 holes (α=90°) in staggered configuration (p/D=s/D=6). We propose a model using two heat transfer coefficients to represent the convective exchanges. The results are non-dimensioned and presented in comparison with the case without holes. The use of this model allows us to define 4 zones. Those 4 zones exist for the 5 blowing rates.

Crystal field and magnetism with Wannier functions: rare-earth doped aluminum garnets

Using the recently developed method we calculated the crystal field parameters m yttrium anct lutetium aluminum garnets doped with seven trivalent Krarners rare-earth ions. We then inserted calculated parameters into the atomic-like Hamiltonian taking into account the electron-electron, spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions and determined the multiplet splitting by the crystal field as well as magnetic tensors. We compared calculated results with available experimental data. Very good agreement with the spectroscopic data and qualitative agreement with experimental tensors was found.

Interaction of silver nanoparticles with mediterranean agricultural soils: Lab-controlled adsorption and desorption studies

The production of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) has increased tremendously during recent years due to their antibacterial and physicochemical properties. As a consequence, these particles are released inevitably into the environment, with soil being the main sink of disposal. Soil interactions have an effect on AgNP mobility, transport and bioavailability. To understand AgNP adsorption processes, lab-controlled kinetic studies were *** tests performed with five different mediterranean agricultural soils showed that cation exchange capacity and electrical conductivity are the main parameters controlling the adsorption processes. The adsorption kinetics of different sized(40, 75, 100 and 200 nm)and coated(citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethyleneglycol(PEG)) AgNPs indicated that these nanoparticle properties have also an effect on the adsorption *** assess the mobility and bioavailability of AgNPs and to determine if their form is maintained during adsorption/desorption processes, loaded soils were submitted to leaching tests three weeks after batch adsorption studies. The DIN 38414-S4 extraction method indicated that AgNPs were strongly retained on soils, and single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry confirmed that silver particles maintained their nanoform, except for 100 nm PEG-AgNPs and 40 nm citrate-coated AgNPs. The DTPA(diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) leaching test was more effective in extracting silver,but there was no presence of AgNPs in almost all of these leachates.

Divergence and constraint in the thermal sensitivity of aquatic insect swimming performance

Environmental temperature variation may play a significant role in the adaptive evolutionary divergence of ectotherm thermal performance curves(TPCs).However,divergence in TPCs may also be constrained due to various ***,we measured TPCs for swimming velocity of temperate and tropical mayflies(Family:Baetidae)and their stonefly predators(Family:Perlidae)from different *** predicted that differences in seasonal climatic regimes would drive divergence in TPCs between temperate and tropical *** tropical temperatures should favor the evolution of"specialists"that perform well across a narrow range of ***,variable temperatures in temperate zones,however,should favor"generalists"that perform well across a broad range of *** phylogenetically paired comparisons of mayflies and stoneflies,swimming speed was generally unaffected by experimental temperature and did not differ among populations between latitudes,suggesting a maintenance of performance breadth across elevation and *** exception was found between temperate and tropical mayflies at low elevation where climatic differences between latitudes are *** addition,TPCs did not differ between mayflies and their stonefly predators,except at tropical low *** results indicate that divergence in TPCs may be con strai ned in aquatic in sects except under the most differe nt ther・mal regimes,perhaps because of trade-offs that reduce thermal sensitivity and increase performance breadth.

Droplet microreactor for high-throughput fluorescence-based measurements of single catalyst particle acidity

The particles of heterogeneous catalysts differ greatly in size,morphology,and most importantly,in *** these catalyst particles in batch typically results in ensemble averages,without any information at the level of individual catalyst *** date,the study of individual catalyst particles has been rewarding but is stll rather slow and often ***,these valuable in-depth studies at the single particle level lack statistical ***,we report the development of a droplet microreactor for high-throughput fluorescence-based measurements of the acidities of individual particles in fluid catalytic cracking(FCC)equilibrium catalysts(ECAT).This method combines systematic screening of single catalyst particles with statistical *** oligomerization reaction of 4-methoxystyrene,catalyzed by the Bronsted acid sites inside the zeolite domains of the ECAT particles,Was performed on-chip at 95 ℃.The fluorescence signal generated by the reaction products inside the ECAT particles was detected near the outlet of the *** high-throughput acidity screening platform was capable of detecting~1000 catalyst particles at a rate of 1 catalyst particle every 2.4 *** number of detected catalyst particles was representative of the overall catalyst particle population with a confidence level of 95%.The measured fluorescence intensities showed a clear acidity distribution among the catalyst particles,with the majority(96.1%)showing acidity levels belonging to old,deactivated catalyst particles and a minority(3.9%)exhibiting high acidity *** latter are potentially of high interest,as they reveal interesting new physicochemical properties indicating why the particles were still highly acidic and reactive.
