SARS-CoV-2 productively infects primary human immune system cells in vitro and in CoviD-19 patients

Seasonal variability in CDOM absorption and fluorescence properties in the Barataria Basin,Louisiana,USA

Absorption and fluorescence properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter （CDOM） along a 124 km transect in the Barataria Basin, a large estuary located in Louisiana, USA, were investigated during high and low flow periods of the Mississippi River in the spring and winter of 2008-2009. Mean CDOM absorption at 355 nm from the marine to the freshwater end member stations ranged from （3.25 ± 0.56） to （20.76 ± 2.43） m^-1 for the three month high flow period whereas it varied from （1.48 ± 1.08） to （25.45 ± 7.03） m^-1 for the same stations during low flow period. Corresponding salinity values at these stations indicated the influence of river and shelf exchanges in the lower basin and precipitation and runoff in the upper basin. An inverse relationship of CDOM absorbance and fluorescence with salinity observed in the basin could he a useful indicator of salinity. CDOM fluorescence also varied over a large range showing an approximately 8 to 12-fold increase between the marine and freshwater end members for the two flow seasons. Excitation-emission matrix spectral plots indicated the presence of various fluorescence components with highest being the A-peak, lowest the T-peak, and the C and M-peaks showing similar trends along the transect. During low flow season the A/C ratio were well correlated with station locations indicating increased terrestrial influence towards the upper basin. CDOM absorption and fluorescence at 355 nm were highly correlated and independent of CDOM sources suggesting that fluorescence could be used to characterize CDOM in the basin.

Does Surgery Have a Relevant Role in the Primary Treatment of Locoregionally Advanced Oropharyngeal Carcinomas?

Background: Treatment concepts for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas are controversial. This review compares the results obtained by distinct treatment options in locoregionally oropharyngeal advanced carcinomas: primary surgical resection followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone. Methods: 57 patients with stage III and IV oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were selected. 17 patients were treated with primary surgical resection followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and 40 patients were treated only with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Statistical analysis was performed regarding survival rates according to tumor location, stage, treatment regimen and recurrence. Results: Two-year loco-regional control rates were 94% after surgery plus chemoradiotherapy and 55% after chemoradiotherapy (p = 0.016). Progression free survival rates were 88% and 27%, respectively (p 0.001). Overall survival rates were 88% and 45%, respectively (p = 0.002). Conclusions: In this study, primary surgical resection followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy showed better clinical outcomes with a lower risk of death associated with tumor and tumor progression.

Sustainability of Vernacular Architecture as a Basis for New Popular Housing Projects in Arequipa, Peru

The aim of this work is to present an analysis about three vernacular houses （Churaj6n, Moral, and Chicha） from remarkable architectonic periods of the Arequipa city in Peru： Pre-Spanish, Colonial, and Republican. Some historic facts related with the region are presented in order to furnish a general panorama. This city is an oasis on the border of the Atacama Desert, and aside there are three volcanoes. Also, at the last 40th years, this region has suffered eight earthquakes. The bio-environmental equilibrium is fragile. Nowadays, due to the urban spread and the increase of the land price, the poor people go to live in the city periphery inside uncomfortable and fragile houses. Also, it is observed an intense occupation of the meadow areas which are crucial to maintain the regional climate, food production, and the ecosystem. Fundamentals of social sustainability and bioclimatic architectures are employed in the analysis in order to create conditions to empower poor people and an environment protection.

Relieving a Tropical Vernacular Habitat Typology as a Source for Contemporary Social Housing Designs

This work presents an analysis for the rural vernacular dwelling （Culata Yovai）, sited in the South America Guarani region, basin of Paraguay and Paraná rivers. Outdoor climate has conducted man to build along the time a habitat climatic responsive. Nowadays, studies in progress try to show how this vernacular typology can support new low-income house designs. The intent is to guarantee for new projects the socio-cultural image that people, coming from countryside to live in city outskirts, are accostumed. Also, to provide material improvements and functional adequation for a quality and healthiness. Natural ventilation is the main bioclimatic strategy during summer for thermal comfort, which influences the house characteristics. This is proven by calculation, and simulation with the CFX-ANSYS software. Thus, the analysis performed shows the real possibity to reconcile bioclimatism with the symbolic-cultural value represented by this vernacular architecture form. It is hopped that this study can be considered as a methodological contributition for new sustainable projects （materials, technics and services） of low-incoming houses in this Latin American region.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Head and Neck:Epidemiology and Predictors of Prognosis

Objectives: The biologic behavior of the adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and the factors predicting outcome for these tumors are still poorly understood. Our objective is to analyze the predicting factors and the value of different treatment possibilities, since none sole treatment has been standardized. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the epidemiologic, clinical and histologic aspects of ACC, as well as treatment options and other prognostic factors of all the cases of ACC of the head and neck treated at this Institution were analyzed. From 1974 until 2011, 152 patients were diagnosed with ACC and treated at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (Porto Centre). Main outcome measures: overall survival, local recurrence and distant metastasis were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Factors predictive of outcome were identified by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 55.8 years (range, 19-83 years). Incidence was higher in the female population, with a female to male ratio of 1.7:1 respectively. The primary tumor location was hard palate and submandibular region in 56 cases, 28 in each location (24.6%), parotid gland (17 cases, 14.9%) and oral cavity excluding palate (16 cases, 14%).Distributions according to T stage were: T1 (29.8%);T2 (30.7%);T3 (17.5%);T4 (22%). The overall 1-year, 5-year and 10-year survival for all patients were 94.6%, 60.5%, 41.6%, respectively. Conclusions: Univariate survival analysis revealed that age older than 60 years (p = 0.002), solid histologic subtype (p = 0.042), advanced clinical stage (p p = 0.036) were correlated with a poor survival. Multivariate analysis confirmed that age and advanced clinical stage were worst independent predicators of overall survival as well as perineural invasion for local recurrence and distant metastasis. Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma—Experience of an Oncology Center

Introduction and Objectives: Sinonasal tumours represent only 3% of all head and neck cancers. Adenocarcinoma is the second most frequent histopathology type. Hardwood exposure has been considered a risk factor. Sinonasal adenocarcinoma grows silently which leads to a late diagnosis and low survival rates. The aim of this study was to present our experience in the management of the patients with sinonasal adenocarcinoma. Method: Retrospective medical records review of patients with sinonasal adenocarcinomas (1974 to 2009). Results: From 301 patients with sinonasal tumors, 67 had histology of adenocarcinoma. Patient average age was 60.1 ± 11.1 years (30 - 84 years). 83.6% were man. 65.7% had history of working with wood. 70.1% of the patients had advance disease. The most common treatment strategy was external surgery (lateral rhinotomy (47.8%), sublabial (17.9%) or cranio-facial resection (6%)) or endoscopic approaches with postoperative radiotherapy. The 3 and 5 years overall survival rate were 60% and 49%, respectively. Conclusions: Our group study showed similar epidemiologic characteristics than other series. We confirmed sinonasal adenocarcinomas tendency to late diagnosis and wood dust exposure relation. In our experience, the limited surgical treatment (without craniofacial resection) and postoperative radiotherapy has good survival rates results, similar to other departments who consider the craniofacial resection as the standard treatment.

Head and Neck Cancer Early Identification of Malnutrition High Risk Patients and Quality of Life Optimization

Malnutrition in Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients can be present at the moment of diagnosis. The nutritional status is determinant for the treatment success and quality of life of the patients. The nutritional status gradually declines during treatment and the majority of patients undergoing treatment will need nutritional therapy. On the other hand, HNC, like other cancers, can induce a paraneoplastic syndrome that leads to cachexia. This cachexia status is most of the times the cause of death or the cause of treatment failure. So, early identification of malnutrition high risk patients is crucial to start an adequate nutrition support intervention in HNC patients. This study aims to identify HNC patients who present malnutrition or higher risk of malnutrition;to signalize variables that support early identification of high-risk patients of becoming malnourished and to establish a dynamic relationship between malnutrition risk in these patients and Quality of Life (QoL) impacts. For six months consecutive outpatients with HNC admitted at the Head & Neck Unity of Oncology Portuguese Institute—Porto were asked to participate in the research (n = 114). The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) cancer-specific HRQoL questionnaire-QLQ-C30 and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, MUST were used. At the moment of first presentation, 32 patients (28.1%) presented high-risk of malnutrition. HNC patients with oral cavity and oropharynx tumour locations, older, with low literacy or with BMI under 18.5 at the moment of diagnosis, represent a high-risk group. When HNC is considered, a dynamic and bi-directional connection between malnutrition and QoL is observed. Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome related to unintentional weight loss and to loss of muscle and fat mass. In head and neck cancer (HNC) its incidence is important and not only related to a deficient intake of food due to the impact of the disease in the vital functions. A complex disturbance in the normal metabolism of the patient promotes a persistent inflammatory state and a shifting in the metabolism balance toward a catabolic predominance affecting primarily the skeletal muscle. This leads to severe impairment of the functional, emotional and social status and quality of life of the patients that will compromise response to treatment and the disease prognosis. Understanding this deleterious syndrome and mainly identifying it in early stages of the disease is of a major importance in achieving better outcomes to head and neck cancer patients. This study pretends to identify clinical aspects related to cachexia in HNC in a clinical perspective for application on the routine clinical practice. In our study, 30 HNC patients were enrolled and evaluated in terms of nutritional values (actual and loss of weight in the past 6 months, body mass index (BMI), nutritional risk index (NRI), malnutrition universal screening tool), serum biochemical markers (albumin, total proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and myostatin) and health related quality of life (HRQoL) evaluation (using European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaires (QLQ): EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-HN43). A minimum follow-up of 48 months was considered for all patients. Our results showed that NRI is a good and sensitive index to identify cachexia. This index uses two parameters, one constitutional (loss of weight) and one biochemical (level of serum albumin). Hematological parameters can provide key information to an animal health ***,this information is usually hard to ***,we described the hematological parameters of Leptodactylus podicipinus in the Brazilian *** measured red blood cell morphometrics,erythrogram,and *** also tested for phylogenetic signal in the erythrogram and leukogram of 48 frog species from 15 families,testing if body size explains their *** were the most abundant leukocytes(>60%)in ***,followed by neutrophils(∼10%).Given that *** is an abundant and widely distributed species in central Brazil,knowing its hematological pattern can help establish a baseline and improve its use as a bioindicator of environmental *** corpuscular hemoglobin and value contributed more to the phylomorphospace of erythrogram,in which Leptodactylus *** Hypsiboas raniceps had lower values of these variables,whereas Bufotes viridis and Hyla arborea had high *** phylogenetic signal was spread throughout the dimensions of the leukogram *** variables that most contributed to it were total leukocytes counts,lymphocytes,and *** also found a moderate phylogenetic signal for both the erythrogram and ***,body size accounted for a low proportion of variation in both the leukogram(4.7%)and erythrogram(0.57%).By applying phylogenetic comparative methods to hematological parameters,our results add a new perspective on the evolution of blood cell physiology in frogs.
