NOAA/AVHRR sea surface temperature accuracy in the East/Japan Sea

Sea surface temperature(SST)retrieved from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR)onboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA)polar orbiting environmental satellites were validated in the East/Japan Sea(EJS)using surface drifter measurements as ground truths from 2005 to ***,the root-mean-square(rms)errors of multichannel SSTs(MCSSTs)and non-linear SSTs(NLSSTs)using global SST coefficients were approximately 0.85℃ and 0.80℃,*** analysis of the SST errors(satellite-drifter)revealed a dependence on the amount of atmospheric *** addition,satellite-derived SSTs tended to be related to wind speeds,particularly during the *** SST errors also demonstrated diurnal variations with relatively higher rms from 0.80℃ to 1.00℃ during the night than the day,with a small rms of about 0.50℃.Bias also exhibited reasonable diurnal differences,showing small biases during the *** a satellite zenith angle has been considered in the global SST coefficients,its effect on the SST errors still remained in case of the *** the diverse use of SST data,the continuous validation and understanding of the characteristic errors of satellite SSTs should be conducted based on extensive in-situ temperature measurements in the global ocean as well as local seas.

Evaluation of the safety of hair essence containing 0.05% purified bee venom on the skin and eyes of rabbits

Delayed hypersensitivity reaction resulting in maculopapular-type eruption due to entecavir in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B

Several clinical trials have demonstrated the potent antiviral efficacy of entecavir (ETV), and this relatively new nucleoside analogue drug has rapidly become a frequently prescribed therapy for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) worldwide. While the studies have also shown a good overall safety profile for ETV, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients with advanced cirrhosis have been reported and represent a broad spectrum of drug-induced injuries, including lactic acidosis, myalgia, neuropathy, azotemia, hypophosphatemia, muscular weakness, and pancreatitis, as well as immune-mediated responses (i.e., allergic reactions). Cutaneous ADRs associated with ETV are very rare, with only two case reports in the publicly available literature; both of these cases were classified as unspecified hypersensitivity allergic (type I) ADR, but neither were reported as pathologically proven or as evaluated by cytokine release analysis. Here, we report the case of a 45-year-old woman who presented with a generalized maculopapular rash after one week of ETV treatment for lamivudine-resistant CHB. The patient reported having experienced a similar skin eruption during a previous three-month regimen of ETV, for which she had self-discontinued the medication. Histopathological analysis of a skin biopsy showed acanthotic epidermis with focal parakeratosis and a perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate admixed with interstitial eosinophils in the papillary and reticular dermis, consistent with a diagnosis of drug sensitivity. A lymphocyte stimulation test showed significantly enhanced IL-4, indicating a classification of type IVb delayed hypersensitivity. The patient was switched to an adefovir-lamivudine combination regimen and the skin eruption resolved two weeks after the ETV withdrawal. This case represents the first pathologically and immunologically evidenced ETV-induced delayed type hypersensitivity skin reaction reported to date. Role of debris flow on the change of^10Be concentration in rapidly eroding watersheds:a case study on the Seti River,central Nepal

The concentration of cosmogenic loBe in riverine sediments has been widely used as a proxy for catchment-wide denudation rate （CWDR）. One of the key assumptions of this approach is that sediments originating from sub-basins with different erosional histories are well mixed. A tragic debris flow occurred in the Seti River watershed, central Nepal, on May 5, 2012. This catastrophic debris flow was triggered by slope failure on the peak of Annapurna IV and resulted in many casualties in the lower Seti Khola. However, it provided an opportunity to test the assumption of equal mixing of sediments in an understudied rapidly eroding watershed. This study documents the CWDR of ^10Be to evaluate the extent of the influence of episodic erosional processes such as debris flow on the spatio-temporal redistribution of loBe concentrations. Our data show that the debris flow caused little change in CWDR across the debris flow event. In addition to isotopic measurement, we calculated denudation rates by using the modeled concentrations in pre- and post-landslide sediments based on the local ^10Be production rate. The modeled result showed little change across the event, indicating that the debris flow in May 2012 played a minor role in sediment evacuation, despite the rapid erosion in the catchment. Our study concludes that although the 2012 event caused many casualties and severe damage, it was a low-magnitude, high frequency event.

Agmatine reduces nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation in the cerebral cortex in a rat model of transient global cerebral ischemia

Agmatine, an analog of L-arginine, is an endogenous substance synthesized by arginine decarboxylase, which has been shown to possess neuroprotective effects following brain ischemia. Nitric oxide is generated by sequential oxidation of the guanidinium group in L-arginine, and agmatine might protect the brain from ischemic injury by interfering with nitric oxide signaling. This study investigated the effects of agmatine on cerebral cortex neuronal injury following transient global cerebral ischemia and also detected nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation. Results demonstrated that intraperitoneal injection of agmatine in global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion alleviated ischemia/reperfusion-induced cerebral cortical cortex neuronal injury and cellular apoptosis, decreased neuronal and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression at 24, 48, and 72 hours following global cerebral ischemia and reperfusion, and greatly inhibited nitrotyrosine levels, which reflect the amount of peroxynitrite formed. These findings indicated that agmatine alleviates cerebral cortex neuronal injury following global cerebral ischemia and decreases nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation following ischemia/repeffusion.

8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine:Not mere biomarker for oxidative stress,but remedy for oxidative stress-implicated gastrointestinal diseases

Reactive oxygen species （ROS） attack guanine bases in DNA easily and form 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine （8-OHdG）, which can bind to thymidine rather than cytosine, based on which, the level of 8-OHdG is gen- erally regarded as a biomarker of mutagenesis conse- quent to oxidative stress. For example, higher levels of 8-OHdG are noted in Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic atrophic gastritis as well as gastric cancer. However, we have found that exogenous 8-OHdG can paradoxically reduce ROS production, attenuate the nuclear factor-KB signaling pathway, and ameliorate the expression of proinflammatory mediators such as interleukin （IL）-I, IL-6, cyclo-oxygenase-2, and induc- ible nitric oxide synthase in addition to expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase （NOX）-I, NOX organizer-1 and NOX activator-1 in vari- ous conditions of inflammation-based gastrointestinal （GI） diseases including gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and even colitis-associated carci- nogenesis. Our recent finding that exogenous 8-OHdG was very effective in either inflammation-based or oxidative-stress-associated diseases of stress-related mucosal damage has inspired the hope that synthetic 8-OHdG can be a potential candidate for the treatment of inflammation-based GI diseases, as well as the pre- vention of inflammation-associated GI cancer. In this editorial review, the novel fact that exogenous 8-OHdG can be a functional molecule regulating oxidative- stress-induced gastritis through either antagonizing Rac-guanosine triphosphate binding or blocking the signals responsible for gastric inflammatory cascade is introduced.

Thermal Dechlorination Kinetics of Rare Earth Oxychlorides

The kinetics of a thermal dechlorination and oxidation of NdOCl and GdOCl were investigated by using a non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis under various oxygen partial pressures. The conversions of NdOCl and GdOCl into each of their stable oxides (Nd2O3 and Gd2O3) appeared to be an oxygen-dependent endothermic and one-step reaction. The observed activation energy for the conversions of NdOCl and GdOCl were determined as 228.3±6.1 kJ·mole-1 and 137.7±4.1 kJ·mole-1, respectively. The conversions of NdOCl and GdOCl into each of their stable oxides (Nd2O3 and Gd2O3) could be described by a power law (g(α)=α3/2) and a linear-contracting boundary reaction (g(α)=α), respectively.

Patient safety culture and handoff evaluation of nurses in small and medium-sized hospitals

Objectives:This study was conducted to investigate the current status of handoffs,perception of patient safety culture,and degrees of handoff evaluation in small and medium-sized hospitals and identified factors that make a difference in handoff ***:This is a descriptive study.425 nurses who work at small and medium-sized hospitals in South Korea were included in our *** completed a set of self-reporting questionnaires that evaluated demographic data,handoff-related characteristics,perception of patient safety culture,and handoff ***:Results showed that the overall score of awareness of a patient safety culture was 3.65±0.45,the level was *** score of handoff evaluation was 5.24±*** nurses experienced errors in handoff and most nurses had no guidelines and checklist in the *** evaluation differed significantly according to the level of education,work patterns,duration of hospital employment,handoff method,degree of satisfaction with the current handoff method,errors occurring at the time of handoff,handoff guidelines,and appropriateness of handoff education time(Phandoff improvement,guidelines and standards should be *** is necessary to develop a structured handoff education *** formal handoff education should be implemented to spread knowledge uniformly.
