Histopathology and TB-PCR kit analysis in differentiating the diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn’s disease

The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Biophysical Properties of Facial Skin

Lack of sleep is a problem in today’s society, and many people are concerned about changes in their outward appearance due to lack of sleep. People generally come up with some noticeable skin attributes as symptoms of sleep deficiency including rough, dull, and dry skin as well as droopy eyelids and dark eye circles. Several previous reports also suggested that poor sleep could affect the skin condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of one night of sleep deprivation on various skin biophysical properties. Twenty four healthy females participated in a study of one night of sleep deprivation. Subjects were kept awake for one night in a laboratory with controlled temperature and relative humidity. The skin condition of each subject was evaluated after normal sleep pattern and after one night of sleep deprivation. The measured skin biophysical parameters included transepidermal water loss, facial pore size, and skin tone, hydration, elasticity, desquamation, translucency, and blood flow. The cheek, eye, and lip areas were evaluated. After one night of sleep deprivation, multiple skin biophysical parameters showed changes when compared to the baseline measurements. A significant decrease in skin hydration and impaired barrier function were observed (p < 0.05). Decreased hydration led to decreased skin elasticity and translucency and increased skin scaling (p < 0.05). Facial pores were more conspicuous, and skin lightness decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Furthermore, skin blood flow decreased prominently (p < 0.05). The results demonstrated that the skin features that are recognized as symptoms of sleep deficiency actually showed remarkable differences after a period of sleep deprivation, and some of these features were confirmed in the eye, lip, as well as the cheek areas. This study revealed a significant association between sleep deprivation and skin biophysical properties by scientific measuring.

The Rare Isotope Accelerator complex for ONline experiments(RAON) is a new radioactive ion beam accelerator facility under construction in Korea. The large acceptance multi-purpose spectrometer(LAMPS) is one of the experimental devices for nuclear physics at RAON. It focuses on the nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities. The LAMPS Collaboration has developed and constructed various detector elements, including a time projection chamber(TPC) and a forward neutron detector array. From the positron beam test, the drift velocity of the secondary electrons in the TPC is 5:3±0:2 cm/ls with P10 gas mixture, and the position resolution for pads with dimensions of 4×15 mm^2 is in the range of$ 0.6–0.8 mm, depending on the beam position. From the neutron beam test, the energy resolution of the prototype neutron detector module is determined to be 3.4%, and theposition resolution is estimated to be better than 5.28 *** present, the construction of the LAMPS neutron detector system is in progress.

Differences between Cheeks and Dorsal Hands Skin Properties during Skiing in a Cold and Windy Environment

Background/Purpose: The skin protects against external factors and this skin function can be affected by environmental conditions, including low temperature, low humidity, and high altitude. Therefore, it is important to study the relationship between the environment and the skin. The purpose of this study is to determine how the skin barrier functions change at low temperatures. Methods: This study was performed at a Korean ski resort on January 2015 and evaluated 10 subjects skin condition during skiing. Skin properties were examined at 2 sites (cheeks and dorsal hands) and four time points (indoor;baseline, outdoor;after first skiing and after second skiing, indoor;after taking a shower). Results: The skin hydration on the cheek decreased after the second skiing session and the erythema decreased only after the first skiing while this value on dorsal hand was not changed by skiing. The brightness and yellowness of cheek skin increased and redness decreased therefore, skin color became pale during skiing. The extensibility of cheeks and dorsal hands decreased after skiing. We found positive correlation between skin temperature and redness (r2 = 0.707, p Conclusions: Low temperatures can affect human skin color so that the skin color becomes pale because capillary blood vessels shrink when skin is exposed to cold environment. The cheek skin tends to change easily than dorsal hand during ambient temperature change.

Cognitive Profiles and Subtypes of Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment: Data from a Clinical Follow-Up Study

Background: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous condition with a variety of clinical outcomes, the presence of which correlates with risk of Alzheimer’s disease as well as pre-clinical stages of other dementia subtypes. The aims of this study were to assess the specific patterns of cognitive profiles and to identify changes from baseline to 24 weeks in patients with MCI using detailed neuropsychological testing. Methods: We consecutively recruited 120 MCI patients at baseline according to the Petersen’s clinical diagnostic criteria, who were admitted to the Dementia and Memory Clinics. We analyzed patients who fulfilled both inclusion and exclusion criteria for MCI and classified them into four subtypes according to deficits in major cognitive domains;amnestic MCI single domain (aMCI-s), amnestic multiple domain MCI (aMCI-m), non-amnestic single domain MCI (naMCI-s) and non-amnestic multiple domain MCI (naMCI-m). Four groups of MCI were evaluated by a detailed neuropsychological battery test. Results: 83 patients with MCI at the 24-week follow-up were classified into four subtypes. The most frequent subtype was amnestic multi-domain MCI, with the frequency of MCI subtypes as follows: aMCI-s (n = 21, 25.3%), aMCI-m (n = 53, 63.9%), naMCI-s (n = 5, 6.0%) and naMCI-m (n = 4, 4.8%). In the major cognitive items of the SNSB-D, there were significant changes between the initial and follow-up tests in the domains of language, memory and the fron-tal/executive function (p < 0.05), except for attention, in all MCI patient subtypes. At 24-weeks follow-up, the conversion rate to Alzheimer’s disease was 2.4% (n = 2) from a subtype of amnestic multi-domain MCI. Conclusions: Our study revealed the most frequent subtype of MCI to be multiple domain amnestic MCI, with this subtype having a higher tendency of conversion to Alzheimer’s disease.

Differences in Skin Properties of Korean Women at the Initial Aging Phase

Many studies on aging have focused on evaluating differences between older and younger people, but only a few have focused on differences in skin properties among subjects from the same age group according to their skin aging status. In this study, we evaluated the facial skin condition and life style factors in 110 Korean women aged 25 to 35 in an attempt to evaluate factors which may affect the skin aging status in the initial aging phase. The facial skin condition of 110 healthy Korean women was assessed over two successive 6-month periods, summer and winter. Using clinical assessments including aging, wrinkles and skin’s elasticity values, the subjects were divided into 7 groups. Then, various facial skin conditions and life style factors were examined between a severe aging group and mild aging group. In the severe aging group, the mean value pH was lower and the mean value of water content was slightly lower than that of women in the mild aging group. Also, the seasonal site variation in water content and sebum secretion level were significantly higher in the severe aging group than in the mild aging group. Topical sunscreen using percentage was not significantly different between the two groups. However, the number of cosmetic subject use was slightly higher in the mild aging group than in the severe aging group. The study suggested that there were several differences in skin characteristics between women in the severe aging group and in the mild aging group at the initial aging phase. Seasonal site variation between cheek and forehead was the most dominant differences. We also considered that life style factors such as cosmetic use could affect skin aging status.

Spontaneous resolution of systemic sarcoidosis in a patient with chronic hepatitis C without interferon therapy

A 39-year-old male patient complaining of bilateral hand joint arthralgia was evaluated and found to have chronic hepatitis C and systemic sarcoidosis involving lung, skin, liver, and spleen. Hepatic and cutaneous sarcoidoses were confirmed by the presence of numerous noncaseating granulomas on histological examination. Pulmonary and splenic involvements were diagnosed by imaging studies. Fifteen months later, the sarcoidotic lesions in lung, liver, and spleen were resolved by radiological studies and a liver biopsy showed no granuloma but moderate to severe inflammatory activity, systemic sarcoidosis is a rare comorbidity of chronic hepatitis C which may spontaneously resolve.

Association of visceral obesity and early colorectal neoplasia

AIM:To examine whether visceral adipose tissue(VAT)serves as a risk factor for colorectal adenoma-early colorectal cancer(CRC)***:A retrospective case-control study was conducted with 153 patients with stageⅠCRC,age/sex-matched 554 patients with colorectal adenoma and557 normal *** subjects underwent various laboratory tests,abdominal fat computed tomography(CT),and *** was defined as an intraabdominal adipose tissue area measured by CT *** tissue area was measured at the level of the umbilicus from CT *** used the lowest quartile of VAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue area as a reference ***:The body mass index(BMI),total cholesterol,fasting glucose and VAT areas were significantly different among normal,adenoma and CRC *** VAT area was 120.6±49.0 cm2in normal controls,130.6±58.4 cm2in adenoma group and 117.6±51.6cm2in CRC group(P=0.002).In univariate analysis,increased BMI was a risk factor for CRC compared to control(P=0.025).However,VAT area was not a risk factor for CRC compared to *** multivariate analysis that adjusted for smoking,alcohol consumption and subcutaneous adipose tissue area,VAT area was inversely related to CRC,compared to the adenoma(OR=0.53,95%CI:0.31-0.92,highest quartile vs lowest quartile).CONCLUSION:Our study shows that visceral obesity is not a risk factor for early *** obesity might influence the normal-adenoma sequence but not the adenoma-early carcinoma sequence.

Multilayer MoS2 is a promising active material for sensing, energy harvesting, and optoelectronic devices owing to its intriguing tunable electronic band structure. However, its optoelectronic applications have been limited due to its indirect band gap nature. In this study, we fabricated a new type of phototransistor using multilayer MoS2 crystal hybridized with p-type organic semiconducting rubrene patches. Owing to the outstanding photophysical properties of rubrene, the device characteristics such as charge mobility and photoresponsivity were considerably enhanced to an extent depending on the thickness of the rubrene patches.
