Sojucktang (SJT) has long been used for the treatment of endometrial diseases in Korea. However, the mechanisms responsible for the SJT-induced apoptosis in endometrial cancer cells remain unclear. In the present study, SJT was demonstrated to show cytotoxic effect and induce apoptotic cell death via mitochondrial regulation in KLE endometrial cancer cells. Linderae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Zedoariae Rhizoma, Trogopterorum Faeces and Agelicae Gigantis Radix were found to be the potent constituent herbs of SJT to significantly decrease the viability of KLE cells by a tetra zolium salt (XTT) assay. Apoptotic bodies were observed in SJT-treated KLE cells by 4′-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and TdT-mediated-dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. SJT also increased sub-G1 DNA contents of the cell cycle undergoing apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, it was observed that SJT activated caspase-3 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, this study shows that SJT exerts anti-tumor activity against KLE endometrial cancer cells via mitochondrial dependent apoptosis induction.

BACKGROUND Polymyxin B hemoperfusion(PMX-HP)has been used as a treatment for intraabdominal septic shock by absorbing and removing endotoxins of gram-negative *** To investigate the clinical efficacy of PMX-HP in patients with gram-negative septic shock who underwent abdominal *** From January 2012 to December 2018,patients who had septic shock secondary to peritonitis were *** were classified into PMX-HP treated and control groups based on postopreative intervention using *** clinical outcomes were compared using 1:1 propensity score matching methods to balance the overall distribution between the two *** After propensity score matching,40 patients were analyzed(20 patients in the PMX group and 20 patients in the control group).The scores of total Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)score,renal SOFA and coagulation SOFA were significantly improved in the PMX group but not in the control group.(from 11.2±5.8 to 4.7±3.5 in PMX group vs 10.0±4.0 to 8.7±7.3 in control group,P=0.047 from 2.6±1.0 to 0.7±1.0 in PMX group vs 2.6±1.5 to 2.8±1.6 in control group,P=0.000,from 1.6±1.5 to 1.3±1.3 in PMX group vs 1.2±1.2 to 2.8±1.8 in control group,P=0.014,respectively).Further,the length of intensive care unit(ICU)stay was significantly shorter in PMX ***,no statistically significant difference was found in ICU mortality(50%in PMX group vs 50%in control group).CONCLUSION PMX-HP is a feasible adjunct treatment for peritonitis in ICU patients with peritonitis for improved organ impairment and to stabilize *** would be helpful to enhance clinical outcomes especially in patients with complete elimination of the source of gram-negative bacilli infection by surgical procedure accompanied with conventional treatment of sepsis.

Dear Editor,Angiosarcoma is a rare malignancy,which accounts for approximately 1%-2%of soft-tissue sarcomas[1].It can occur at any site within the human *** research-ers suggested that site distribution may be different between Eastern Asian and Western countries[1].Sev-eral factors,such as age,stage at diagnosis,performance status,site of the disease,histological grade,tumor size,and visceral involvement,were suggested as prognos-tic factors in angiosarcoma[2-5].However,there is still controversy regarding to which prognostic factors are significantly *** there are no randomized clinical trials for angiosarcoma,its treatments are guided based on guidelines of soft-tissue sarcoma or the results of several retrospective *** surgery is the preferred treatment for angiosarcoma[2-4].Some stud-ies suggested that receiving adjuvant chemotherapy(CT)is associated with better outcome[5],while other studies have shown that adjuvant CT has no significant effect[6,7].Chemoradiotherapy has been reported to be effective in angiosarcoma especially for cutaneous angiosarcoma[8].However,evidence for the efficacy and safety of pal-liative cytotoxic CT is still ***,here,we present our analysis based on the clinical features,tumor characteristics,treatment and outcomes of angiosarcoma patients in an attempt to investigate the significant prog-nostic factors and efficient therapeutics in real clinical practice.

Comparison of hepatic venous pressure gradient and endoscopic grading of esophageal varices

AIM: To determine the correlation between the hepatic venous pressure gradient and the endoscopic grade of esophageal ***: From September 2009 to March 2013, a total of 176 measurements of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) were done in 146 patients. Each transjugular HVPG was measured twice, first using an end whole catheter (EH-HVPG), and then using a balloon catheter (B-HVPG). The HVPG was compared with the endoscopic grade of esophageal varices (according to the general rules for recording endoscopic findings of esophagogastric varices), which was recorded within a month of the measurement of ***: The study included 110 men and 36 women, with a mean age of 56.1 years (range, 43-76 years). The technical success rate of the pressure measurements was 100% and there were no complication related to the procedures. Mean HVPG was 15.3 mmHg as measured using the end hole catheter method and 16.5 mmHg as measured using the balloon catheter method. Mean HVPG (both EH-HVPG and B-HVPG) was not significantly different among patients with different characteristics, including sex and comorbid factors, except for cases with hepatocellular carcinoma (B-HVPG, P = 0.01; EH-HVPG, P = 0.02). Portal hypertension (> 12 mmHg HVPG) occurred in 66% of patients according to EH-HVPG and 83% of patients according to B-HVGP, and significantly correlated with Child’s status (B-HVPG, P < 0.000; EH-HVGP, P < 0.000) and esophageal varies observed upon endoscopy (EH-HVGP, P = 0.003; B-HVGP, P = 0.006). One hundred and thirty-five endoscopies were performed, of which 15 showed normal findings, 27 showed grade 1 endoscopic esophageal varices, 49 showed grade 2 varices, and 44 showed grade 3 varices.
