Role of ascites adenosine deaminase in differentiating between tuberculous peritonitis and peritoneal carcinomatosis

AIM： To investigate the usefulness of tumor markers and adenosine deaminase in differentiating between tuberculous peritonitis （TBP） and peritoneal carcinoma- tosis （PC）. METHODS： A retrospective analysis of data was per- formed on consecutive patients who underwent perito- neoscopic and abdominal computed tomography （CT） evaluations. Among 75 patients at the Seoul National University Hospital from January 2000 to June 2010 who underwent both tests, 27 patients （36.0%） and 25 patients （33.3%） were diagnosed with TBP and PC, re- spectively. Diagnosis was confirmed by peritoneoscopic biopsy. RESULTS： Serum c-reactive protein （7.88：1：6.62 mg/ dL vs 3.12 ＋ 2.69 mg/dL, P = 0.01）, ascites adenos- ine deaminase （66.76：1：32.09 IU/L vs 13.89 ：l： 8.95 IU/L, P 〈 0.01）, ascites lymphocyte proportion （67.77 ：1： 23.41% vs 48.36 ＋ 18.78%, P 〈 0.01）, and serum- ascites albumin gradient （0.72 ＋ 0.49 g/dL vs 1.05 ＋ 0.50 g/dL, P = 0.03） were significantly different be- tween the two groups. Among tumor markers, serum and ascites carcinoembryonic antigen, serum carbohy- drate antigen 19-9 showed significant difference be- tween two groups. Abdominal CT examinations showed that smooth involvement of the parietal peritoneum was more common in the TBP group （77.8% vs 40.7%） whereas nodular involvement was more common in the PC group （14.8% vs 40.7%, P = 0.04）. From receiver operating characteristic （ROC） curves ascites adeno- sines deaminase （ADA） showed better discriminative capability than tumor markers. An ADA cut-off level of 21 IU/L was found to yield the best results of differ- ential diagnosis; sensitivity, specificity, positive predic- tive value, and negative predictive value were 92.0%, 85.0%, 88.5% and 89.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION： Besides clinical and radiologic findings, ascitic fluid ADA measurement is helpful in the differen- tial diagnosis of TBP and PC.

Optical anisotropy,which is an intrinsic property of many materials,originates from the structural arrangement of molecular structures,and to date,various polarization-sensitive imaging(PSI)methods have been developed to investigate the nature of anisotropic *** particular,the recently developed tomographic PSI technologies enable the investigation of anisotropic materials through volumetric mappings of the anisotropy distribution of these ***,these reported methods mostly operate on a single scattering model,and are thus not suitable for three-dimensional(3D)PSI imaging of multiple scattering ***,we present a novel reference-free 3D polarization-sensitive computational imaging technique—polarization-sensitive intensity diffraction tomography(PS-IDT)—that enables the reconstruction of 3D anisotropy distribution of both weakly and multiple scattering specimens from multiple intensity-only measurements.A 3D anisotropic object is illuminated by circularly polarized plane waves at various illumination angles to encode the isotropic and anisotropic structural information into 2D intensity *** information are then recorded separately through two orthogonal analyzer states,and a 3D Jones matrix is iteratively reconstructed based on the vectorial multi-slice beam propagation model and gradient descent *** demonstrate the 3D anisotropy imaging capabilities of PS-IDT by presenting 3D anisotropy maps of various samples,including potato starch granules and tardigrade.

Several image-based biomedical diagnoses require high-resolution imaging capabilities at large spatial ***,conventional microscopes exhibit an inherent trade-off between depth-of-field(DoF)and spatial resolution,and thus require objects to be refocused at each lateral location,which is time ***,we present a computational imaging platform,termed E2E-BPF microscope,which enables large-area,high-resolution imaging of large-scale objects without serial *** method involves a physics-incorporated,deep-learned design of binary phase filter(BPF)and jointly optimized deconvolution neural network,which altogether produces high-resolution,high-contrast images over extended depth *** demonstrate the method through numerical simulations and experiments with fluorescently labeled beads,cells and tissue section,and present high-resolution imaging capability over a 15.5-fold larger DoF than the conventional *** method provides highly effective and scalable strategy for DoF-extended optical imaging system,and is expected to find numerous applications in rapid image-based diagnosis,optical vision,and metrology.

Ever-changing endoscopic treatment for early gastric cancer:Yesterday-today-tomorrow

Endoscopic resection has been an optimal treatment for selected patients with early gastric cancer(EGC) based on advances in endoscopic instruments and techniques. As endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) has been widely used for treatment of EGC along with expanding ESD indication, concerns have been asked to achieve curative resection for EGC while guaranteeing precise prediction of lymph node metastasis(LNM). Recently, new techniques including ESD or endoscopic full-thickness resection combined with sentinel node navigation enable minimal tumor resection and a laparoscopic lymphadenectomy in cases of EGC with high risk of LNM. This review covers the development and challenges of endoscopic treatment for EGC. Moreover, a new microscopic imaging and endoscopic techniques for precise endoscopic diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of EGC are introduced.

MicroRNA aberrations:An emerging field for gallbladdercancer management

Gallbladder cancer(GBC) is infrequent but most lethal biliary tract malignancy characterized by an advanced stage diagnosis and poor survival rates attributed to absence of specific symptoms and effective treatment options. These necessitate development of early prognostic/predictive markers and novel therapeutic interventions. Micro RNAs(mi RNAs) are small, noncoding RNA molecules that play a key role in tumor biology by functioning like tumor suppressor- or oncogenes and their aberrant expression are associated with the pathogenesis of several neoplasms with overwhelming clinical implications. Since mi RNA signature is tissue specific, here, we focused on current data concerning the mi RNAs abberations in GBC pathogenesis. In GBC, mi RNAs with tumor suppressor activity(mi R-135-5p, mi R-335, mi R-34 a, mi R-26 a, mi R-146b-5p, Mir-218-5p, mi R-1, mi R-145, mir-130a) were found downregulated, while those with oncogenic property(mi R-20 a, mi R-182, mir-155) were upregulated. The expression profile of mi RNAs was significantly associated with GBC prognosis and prediction, and forced over-expression/ inhibition of these mi RNAs was shown to affect tumor growth and development. Further, differential expression of mi RNAs in the blood samples of GBC patients suggest mi RNAs as promising noninvasive biomarker. Thus, mi RNAs represent potential candidate for GBC management, though many hurdles need to be overcome before mi RNAs therapy can be clinically applied to GBC prevention and treatment.

Endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS) has become a useful diagnostic and therapeutic modality in gastrointestinal ***,EUS requires additional training since it requires simultaneous endoscopic manipulation and ultrasonographic *** adequate EUS training can be challenging since EUS is highly operator-dependent and training on actual patients can be associated with an increased risk of complications including inaccurate ***,several models have been developed to help facilitate training of *** models currently available for EUS training include computer-based simulators,phantoms,ex vivo models,and live animal *** each model has its own merits and limitations,the value of these different models is rather complementary than ***,there is a lack of objective data regarding the efficacy of each model with recommendations on the use of various training models based on expert opinion ***,objective studies evaluating the efficacy of various EUS training models on technical and clinical outcomes are still needed.

Influence of Tropical Cyclone Landfalls on Spatiotemporal Variations in Typhoon Season Rainfall over South China

This study examined the impact of tropical cyclone (TC) landfalls on the spatiotemporal variations in the rainfall over South China for the period 1957–2005. The target region was selected to show the noteworthy contribution of TC landfalls to the total rainfall during the typhoon season (July–October). Two prevailing spatial variations in the rainfall were obtained from an EOF analysis. The first EOF mode displays singlesign variability over South China with an explained variance of 23.4%. The associated time series of this mode fluctuates on a decadal timescale and was found to be correlated with TC genesis in the South China Sea. The second EOF mode shows a seesaw pattern between Hainan Island/Guangdong Province and the remaining regions with an explained variance of 11.4%. This seesaw pattern results from an anti-correlation in seasonal TC landfalls between the two regions, which was found in previous studies. This is related to the strengthening (weakening) of the upper tropospheric jets and the corresponding development of a massive anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulation over East Asia. The EOF analysis was also conducted using just the data for rainfall caused by landfalling TCs. This revealed that the first EOF mode using just the TC-induced rainfall is nearly identical to the second mode from the total rainfall. The obvious seesaw pattern of the first mode when employing just the TC-induced rainfall in the EOF analysis implies that this pattern has larger temporal variability than the single-signed pattern (i.e., the first EOF mode using the total rainfall) in terms of TC landfalls. This study suggests that TC landfalls over South China and the accompanying rainfall significantly modulate the spatial variation of the typhoon season rainfall there.

Post-translational modifications （PTMs） of transcription factors play a crucial role in regulating metabolic homeostasis. These modifications include phosphory- lation, methylation, acetylation, ubiqulUnation, SUMOy- lation, and O-GIcNAcylation. Recent studies have shed light on the importance of lysine acetylation at nonhis- tone proteins including transcription factors. Acetyla- tion of transcription factors affects subcellular distribution, DNA affinity, stability, transcriptional activity, and current investigations are aiming to further expand our understanding of the role of lysine acetyla- tion of transcription factors. In this review, we summarize recent studies that provide new insights into the role of protein lysine-acetylation in the transcriptional regulation of metabolic homeostasis.

Fabrication of two-layer flexible copper clad laminate by electroless-Cu plating on surface modified polyimide

A flexible copper clad laminate(FCCL) was fabricated using electroless-and electro-Cu plating processes and the effects of pre-treatment time on the adhesion strength of the FCCL were evaluated based on interfacial *** neutralization and catalyst time were varied in the range of 0-20 min and 0.1-10 min,respectively,and the interfacial condition of the FCCL was characterized by atomic force microscopy(AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).It is observed that the peel strength increases significantly as the neutralization and catalyst time *** strength as high as 7.2-7.3 N/cm is obtained as the neutralization and catalyst time increase up to 20 min and 10 min,respectively,which is comparable to the strength achieved by the conventional laminating and sputtering *** improvements are probably due to an increase in the surface roughness of polyimide(PI),the activated surface condition,and the adsorption of palladium ions/atoms(Pd) on the PI surface which act as nucleation sites for Cu.

Enhancement of photoresponsive electrical characteristics of multilayer MoS2 transistors using rubrene patches

Multilayer MoS2 is a promising active material for sensing, energy harvesting, and optoelectronic devices owing to its intriguing tunable electronic band structure. However, its optoelectronic applications have been limited due to its indirect band gap nature. In this study, we fabricated a new type of phototransistor using multilayer MoS2 crystal hybridized with p-type organic semiconducting rubrene patches. Owing to the outstanding photophysical properties of rubrene, the device characteristics such as charge mobility and photoresponsivity were considerably enhanced to an extent depending on the thickness of the rubrene patches.
