Transplantation of h.man adipose tissue-derived stem cells for repair of injured spiral ganglion neurons in deaf guinea pigs

Excessive noise, ototoxic drugs, infections, autoimmune diseases, and aging can cause loss of spiral ganglion neurons, leading to permanent sensorineural h.aring loss in mammals. Stem cells h.ve been confirmed to be able to differentiate into spiral ganglion neurons. Little h.s been reported on adipose tissue-derived stem cells（ADSCs） for repair of injured spiral ganglion neurons. In th.s study, we h.poth.sized th.t transplantation of neural induced-h.man ADSCs（NI-h.ADSCs） can repair th. injured spiral ganglion neurons in guinea pigs with.neomycin-induced sensorineural h.aring loss. NI-h.ADSCs were induced with.culture medium containing basic fibroblast growth.factor and forskolin and th.n injected to th. injured coch.eae. Guinea pigs th.t received injection of h.nks＇ balanced salt solution into th. coch.eae were used as controls. h.matoxylin-eosin staining sh.wed th.t at 8 weeks after cell transplantation, th. number of surviving spiral ganglion neurons in th. cell transplantation group was significantly increased th.n th.t in th. control group. Also at 8 weeks after cell transplantation, immunoh.stoch.mical staining sh.wed th.t a greater number of NI-h.ADSCs in th. spiral ganglions were detected in th. cell transplantation group th.n in th. control group, and th.se NI-h.ADSCs expressed neuronal markers neurofilament protein and microtubule-associated protein 2. With.n 8 weeks after cell transplantation, th. guinea pigs in th. cell transplantation group h.d a gradually decreased auditory brainstem response th.esh.ld, wh.le th.se in th. control group h.d almost no response to 80 d B of clicks or pure tone burst. Th.se findings suggest th.t a large amount of NI-h.ADSCs migrated to th. spiral ganglions, survived for a period of time, repaired th. injured spiral ganglion cells, and th.reby contributed to th. recovery of sensorineural h.aring loss in guinea pigs.

Microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus as renewable biomass feedstock for electricity generation in microbial fuel cells （MFCs）

Renewable algae biomass, Scenedesmus obliquus, was used as substrate for generating electricity in two ch.mber microbial fuel cells （MFCs）. From polarization test, maximum power density with.pretreated algal biomass was 102mW·m^2 （951mW·m^3） at current generation of 276mA·m^-2. Th. individual electrode potential as a function of current generation suggested th.t anodic oxidation process of algae substrate h.d limitation for h.gh.current generation in MFC. Total ch.mical oxygen demand （TCOD） reduction of 74% was obtained wh.n initial TCOD concentration was 534mg · L^-1 for 150 h.of operation. Th. main organic compounds of algae oriented biomass were lactate and acetate, wh.ch.were mainly used for electricity generation. Oth.r byproducts such.as propionate and butyrate were formed at a negligible amount. Electroch.mical Impedance Spectroscopy （EIS） analysis pinpointed th. ch.rge transfer resistance （112Ω ） of anode electrode, and th. exch.nge current density of anode electrode was 1214 nA·cm^-2.

Role of inh.biting LIM-kinase2 in improving erectile function th.ough.suppression of corporal fibrosis in a rat model of cavernous nerve injury

We evaluated wh.th.r LIM-kinase 2 inh.bitor （LIMK2i） could improve erectile function by suppressing corporal fibrosis th.ough.th. normalization of th. Rh.-associated coiled-coil protein kinase 1 （ROCK1）/LIMK2/Cofilin path.ay in a rat model of cavernous nerve crush.injury （CNCl）. Sixty 11-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided equally into five groups： sh.m surgery （S）, CNCl （I）, and CNCl treated with.low-dose （L）, medium-dose （M）, and h.gh.dose （h. LIMK2i. Th. L, M, and h.groups were treated with.a daily intraperitoneal injection of LIMK2i （2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg kg-1 body weigh., respectively） for 1 week after surgery. Th. erectile response was assessed using electrostimulation at 1 week, postoperatively. Penile tissues were processed for Masson＇s trich.ome staining, double immunofluorescence, and Western blot assay. Erectile responses in th. h.group improved compared with.th. I group, wh.le th. M group sh.wed only partial improvement. A significantly decreased smooth.muscle/collagen ratio and an increased content of fibroblasts positive for ph.sph.-/IMK2 were noted in th. I group. Th. M and h.groups revealed significant improvements in h.stological alterations and th. dysregulated LIMK2/Cofilin path.ay, except for LIMK2 ph.sph.rylation in th. M group. Th. inh.bition of LIMK2 did not affect th. ROCK1 protein expression. Th. content of fibroblasts positive for ph.sph.-LIMK2 in th. h.group returned to th. level found in th. S group, wh.reas it did not in th. M group. h.wever, th. L group did not exh.bit such.improvements. Our data suggest th.t th. inh.bition of LIMK2, particularly with.administration of 10.0 mg kg^-1 body weigh. LIMK2i, can improve corporal fibrosis and erectile function by normalizing th. LIMK2/Cofilin path.ay.

Th. manganese concentration of austenitic stainless steel decreases from th. inner layer towards th. surface of th. plasma (ion) carburized layer due to th. evaporation of manganese from th. specimen surface. Th. carbon concentration in th. carburized layer is influenced by alloyed elements such.as Cr, Ni, Si, and Mo, as well as Nitrogen. Th.s study examined th. effects of nitrogen on th. properties of th. carburized layer of h.gh.nitrogen stainless steel. Plasma (ion) carburizing was carried out for 14.4 ks at 1303 K in an atmosph.re of Ch.+h. gas mixtures under a pressure of 350 Pa. Th. plasma carburized layer of th. h.gh.nitrogen stainless steel was th.nner th.n th.t of an austentric stainless steel containing no nitrogen. Th.s suggested th.t th. nitrogen raised th. activity of carbon in th. plasma carburized layer, GDOES measurement indicated th.t th. nitrogen level in th. layer did not vary after plasma (ion) carburizing.

Th. KdV equation with.topograph. included in an N-level model is derived. It is sh.wn th.t if th. topograph. ex- ists. th. KdV equation may describe th. solitary Rossby waves in th. case of basic current with.ut vertical sh.ar, and it is no necessary to introduce th. MKdV equation. Th. results of calculations sh.w th.t th. ch.nge of h.rizontal sh.ar pattern of basic flow may cause an important ch.nge of th. streamline pattern of th. solitary waves with.th. odd meridional wavenumber m, and h.s no effect for th. even meridional wavenumber m. Th. vertical sh.ar increases th. steepness of th. barotropic solitary modes, and it h.s a complicated effect on th. baroclinic modes. Th. influences of topograph.c slope on th. solitary waves are very great. Th. south.rn and north.rn slopes of topograph. may cause dif- ferent solitary wave patterns, with.th. effect of north.rn slope greater. Th. effect of Froude number on th. solitary waves is generally to steepen th. solitary waves, h.wever, th. effect also depends on th. meridional wavenumber m and th. modes of solitary wave.

Th. melting temperature and critical transition temperature Tc of YBa2Cu3O7-δ with.deferent content additives of PbO and BaPbO3 were studied. Wh.n PbO was doped in YBa2Cu3O7-δ, th. melting temperature of YBa2Cu3O7-δ was reduced, h.wever its superconductivity was weakened. From th. XRD pattern of th. sintered mixture of YBa2Cu3O7-δ and PbO, it was known th.t th.re was a reaction between YBa2Cu3O7-δ and PbO, and th. product was BaPbO3. h.nce different contents of BaPbO3 (10mass%, 20mass% and 30mass%) were added in YBa2Cu3O7-δ. It was proved th.t th.re were no reactions between YBa2Cu3O7-δ and BaPbO3. And th. superconductivity of th. mixtures was much.better th.n th.t of th. samples with.PbO additive.

Work with.cereals （barley and wh.at） and a legume （Medicago truncatula） h.s establish.d th.oredoxin h.（Trx h. as a central regulatory protein of seeds. Trx h.acts by reducing disulfide （S-S） groups of diverse seed proteins （storage proteins, enzymes, and enzyme inh.bitors）, th.reby facilitating germination. Early in vitro protein studies were complemented with.experiments in wh.ch.barley seeds with.Trx h.overexpressed in th. endosperm sh.wed accelerated germination and early or enh.nced expression of associated enzymes （α-amylase and pullulanase）. Th. current study extends th. transgenic work to wh.at. Two approach.s were followed to alter th. expression of Trx h.genes in th. endosperm：（1） a h.rdein promoter and its protein body targeting sequence led to overexpression of Trx h., and （2） an antisense construct of Trx h. resulted in cytosolic underexpression of th.t gene （Arabidopsis designation）. Underexpression of Trx h. led to effects opposite to th.se observed for overexpression Trx h. in barley--retardation of germination and delayed or reduced expression of associated enzymes. Similar enzyme ch.nges were observed in developing seeds. Th. wh.at lines with.underexpressed Trx sh.wed delayed preh.rvest sprouting wh.n grown in th. greenh.use or field with.ut a decrease in final yield. Wh.at with.overexpressed Trx h. sh.wed ch.nges commensurate with.earlier in vitro work： increased solubility of disulfide proteins and lower aUergenicity of th. gliadin fraction. Formic acid as an alternative reducing agent for th. catalytic nitrate reduction in aqueous media

Formic acid was used for th. nitrate reduction as a reductant in th. presence of Pd：Cu/γ-alumina catalysts. Th. surface ch.racteristics of th. bimetallic catalyst synth.sized by wet impregnation were investigated by SEM, TEM-EDS. Th. metals were not distributed h.mogeneously on th. surface of catalyst, alth.ugh.th. total contents of both.metals in particles agreed well with.th. th.oretical values. Formic acid decomposition on th. catalyst surface, its influence on solution ph.and nitrate removal efficacy was investigated. Th. best removal of nitrate （50 ppm） was obtained under th. condition of 0.75 g/L catalyst with.Pd：Cu ratio （4：1） and two fold excess of formic acid. Formic acid decay patterns resembled th.se of nitrate removal, sh.wing a linear relationsh.p between kf （formic acid decay） and k （nitrate removal）. Negligible amount of ammonia was detected, and no nitrite was detected, possibly due to buffering effect of bicarbonate th.t is in situ produced by th. decomposition of formic acid, and due to th. sustained release of h. gas.
