Cytogenetic and Molecular Characterization of Hematological Neoplasm in an Ecuadorian Population

Cancer is one of the major causes of mortality in Ecuador and annually, hematological malignancies are within the top ten most common cancers. In this multicentric study, we analyzed a series of patients diagnosed with different hematological disorders between the years 1984 and 2012. Chromosome abnormalities were detected in 1886 (45.9%) patients. FISH and RT-PCR techniques were used in order to determine the presence of genetic rearrangements and complement conventional cytogenetics results. Using FISH and RT-PCR, positive cases were increased by 1.8% and 6.9% respec- tively. We analyzed fusion genes resulting from t(8;21), t(15;17), inv(16), t(9;22), 11q23 rearrangements, t(4;11) and t(1;19). The frequency of transcripts of some of these fusion genes was of particular interest as our results differ from studies on other populations. Specifically, the fusion gene BCR-ABL was present in the form of the b2/a2 transcript in 95% of CML patients and in the form of b3/a2 transcript in the remaining 5%. The PML-RARA fusion gene also showed a distinct pattern of transcript expression. This fusion gene exhibited the bcr2 (36%) and bcr3 (64%) transcripts, how- ever the bcr1 transcript was absent from our sample population. All cases carrying the CBFB-MYH11 fusion gene ex- hibited the F transcript. This was also of interest due to the rarity of this particular transcript worldwide. Finally all cases carrying the MLL-AF4 fusion gene displayed the e7-e8 transcript. The frequency of the subtypes of some fusion genes differ from those reported in other populations, possibly due to the particular genetic make-up of the Ecuadorian population, mostly mestizo, as well as environmental factors.

The addition of nutrients to accelerate biodegradation of oil is an adequate strategy to clean up polluted mangrove soils which pollutes mangrove soils. However, the hydrology of these ecosystems might interfere with such strategy. The effect of flooding frequency and nutrient addition on hydrocarbon removal in mangrove sediments was investigated in this study. Microcosms consisted of pots with 5 kg of fresh mangrove sediments and one seedling of Avicennia germinans. Treatments included: planted microcosms with fertilizer and crude oil (PNC), planted microcosms with oil (PC), non-planted microcosms with oil and fertilizer (NC), planted microcosms with fertilizer (PN) and planted microcosms without oil or fertilizer (P). Mexican Maya crude oil and inorganic nutrients were added in a single dose of approximately 5.0 g DW·kg-1, 0.33 g of N DW·kg-1 and 0.06 g P DW·kg-1. Microcosms were either permanently flooded (PF) or intermittently flooded (IF: 14 hours drained and 10 hours flooded), and kept in a glasshouse in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. In both flooding conditions, oil decreased the relative growth rate of A. germinans by 56% in (PC) treatments and 40% in (PNC) treatments. Redox potential in the oiled treatments (-44.73 to +75.34 mV) was lower than non-oiled treatments (-1.31 to +163.43 mV). Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHs) removal in PC treatments was low in both permanent (2.99% ± 3.51%) and intermittently flooding conditions (11.75% ± 1.46%). The highest TPHs removal was observed in (PNC) and (NC) under IF conditions (47% ± 3.86% and 50.32% ± 7.15% after 4 months, respectively). It was concluded that nutrient addition increased TPHs removal but only under IF conditions and helped mangrove plants to deal with TPHs toxicity.

Background:Since 2015,the Global Technical Strategy(GTS)for Malaria 2016–2030 has been adopted by the World Health Organization(WHO)as a comprehensive framework to accelerate progress for malaria elimination in endemic *** strategy sets the target of reducing global malaria incidence and mortality rates by 90% in *** it is sought to evaluate Brazil’s achievements towards reaching the WHO GTS milestone in *** the total number of new malaria cases in 2015,the main research question is:will Brazil reach the malaria elimination goal in 2030?Methods:Analytical strategies were undertaken using the SIVEP-malaria ofcial databases of the Brazilian Malaria Control Programme for the Brazilian Amazon region from 2009 to *** and time-series analyses were applied for identifying municipalities that support the highest numbers of malaria cases over the *** analysis was used for predicting the estimated number of new cases in Brazil in 2025–***:Brazil has signifcantly reduced the number of new malaria cases in 2020 in comparison with 2015 in the states of Acre(−56%),Amapá(−75%),and Amazonas(−21%);however,they increased in the states of Pará(156%),Rondônia(74%),and Roraima(362%).Forecast of the predicted number of new malaria cases in 2030 is 74,764(95%CI:41,116–141,160)in the Brazilian ***:It is likely that Brazil will reduce the number of new malaria cases in the Brazilian Amazon in 2030 in relation to that in *** forecast shows a reduction by 46%(74,754 in 2030 forecast/137,982 in 2015),but this reduction is yet far from the proposed reduction under the WHO GTS 2030 milestone(90%).Stable and unbeatable transmission in the Juruá River Valley,Manaus,and Lábrea still support endemic malaria in the Brazilian ***’s cross-border malaria is impacting the state of Roraima *** this situation is maintained,the malaria elimination goal(zero cases)may not be reached before *** enhanced

Background:The human papillomavirus virus(HPV)is very common with over 150 strains and at least 42 acquired by sexual *** is a public health concern among women the world over,with an estimated prevalence of 11.7%globally,and 24%in Sub-Saharan *** are five common HPV types;HPV16,HPV18,HPV52,HPV31,and *** cancer affects women globally,with estimated 570,000 new cases in *** 90%of the 311,000 deaths worldwide in that year occurred in low-and middle-income ***:To estimate the prevalence of HPV among sexually active women in Lagos,Nigeria;and to determine the most common HPV type among that ***:A descriptive cross-sectional study design was implemented,with 198 women in total enrolled for the *** active women from various health facilities in Lagos were screened by obtaining cervical tissue,stirred into PCR cell media,and assayed for HPV genotypes using the Roche COBAS®4800 ***:Age of the women ranged from 18 to 65 years(mean 34.6±6.4),with the majority(56.4%)between 25-34 years;65%were married and 63%had a secondary *** at first penile-vaginal contact ranged from 9 to 38 years(mean 20.4±3.9).Sixty-five percent of women stated total lifetime sexual partners of between 2 and 4(mean 2.9±2.5).The prevalence of high-risk HPV was 40.4%(95%CI:40.1 to 40.7)and breakdown of types obtained were;HPV16,2.5%(95%CI:2.22 to 2.78);HPV18,3.5%(95%CI:3.22 to 3.78);other high risk(OHR)HPV,28.3%(95%CI:28 to 28.6);HPV16&OHR HPV,1.5%(95%CI:1.22 to 1.78);HPV18&OHR HPV,4.1%(95%CI:3.82 to 4.38);HPV16,18&OHR HPV,0.5%(95%CI:0.221 to 0.779).HPV negative and inconclusive results were 58.1%and 1.5%***:Prevalence of OHR HPV is high among Nigerian *** informs the pattern of HPV existing in the African region,and may aid future efforts at eradicating the *** findings are further contributive evidence to the initiative to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health challenge

Mobile phones represent a significant and growing problem with respect to electrical waste and electronic equipment (WEEE). Nevertheless, they are perhaps one of the most valuable electronic products, since they are an important resource for the recovery of metals in terms of mass and volume. In this research a chemical recycling of mobile phones by solvolysis was investigated. The processing was performed by comminution in a hammer mill followed by screening to obtain mesh-4 sized flakes. Flakes were subjected to solvolysis. Different reaction conditions were tested. A reaction time between 2 - 7 hours and a temperature between 150°C - 300°C were the optimum conditions to dissolve the polymer contained in mobile phones. Metals were separated by filtration. Chemical analyses (ATR FT-IR, UV) were carried out on the solvent and the mobile phone flakes before and after solvolysis. A SEM study was carried out, before and after solvolysis, but only to the mobile phone flakes. Thermal transitions of mobile phone flakes were determined by DSC. Chemical results showed that some aromatic species migrate from mobile phones flakes to the solvent, due to the solvolysis reaction. Thermal analysis showed that the Tg, (glass transition temperature) of mobile phone flakes after solvolysis was different to Tg of the polymer before solvolysis, this is due to chemical changes in the molecule. A comparative SEM study revealed that, after solvolysis, the polymer contained in mobile phone flakes is more elastomeric. After solvolysis, solvent was recovered by means of a rotatory evaporator, so that it can be used again. The results obtained in this research showed that solvolysis is an alternative for metal recovery from mobile phones.
