This report synthesizes global tropical cyclone(TC)tornado research and operational practices to date.Tornadoes are one of the secondary(and lesser researched)hazards contributing to the devastation TCs leave in their wake.While gale-force winds and storm surge produce the majority of damage and fatalities globally,TC tornadoes also pose a fatal threat,complicating evacuation plans and protective actions as the storm moves inland.Climatological studies characterize TC-spawned tornadoes as usually weak and short-lived,primarily originating from miniature supercells in the outer rainbands.These tornadic features pose challenges to forecasting and radar detection.Additionally,TC tornadoes can pose a threat to communities 12 h prior to and beyond 48 h after a TC makes landfall.Research,both basic and operational,has increased globally over the last few years in efforts to move from a climatological to ingredientsbased approach to detect and forecast TC tornadoes.While the United States has led the charge,given the increased exposure to tornadoes year round,other nations such as China,japan,and Australia have increased their efforts to record and detect TC tornadoes.Despite these advancements,more work needs to be done globally to understand the TC environment conducive for tornadic activity.Recommendations for future forecasting and research for TC tornadoes include i)develop a comprehensive global tornado database to improve research and forecasting efforts;ii)apply innovative technology to detect tornadoes;and iii)conduct field campaigns to thoroughly sample TC tornado environments,particularly along coastlines.

Reminiscing begins with childhood and passes on to student days through graduate school and the first real contact with research. Then early academic posi- tions and stumbling efforts to pursue my ideas. The first significant progress came as a research associate with Prof. W. M. Elsasser at the University of Utah, beginning with an introduction to magnetohydrodynarnics and the generation of the geomagnetic field through induction in the liquid metal core of Earth. A move to the University of Chicago to work with Prof. j. A. Simpson, on the implications of cosmic ray varia- tions and interplanetary magnetic fields, led to the theory of coronal expansion and the solar wind and then to exploring the dynamical effects of cosmic rays on the galactic magnetic field. Spontaneous current sheets and intrinsic rapid reconnection in interlaced magnetic field line topologies were the next big project, leading up to retirement. Finally, it is a pleasure to recall my many associates, whose fresh thinking helped stimulate the daily research activities.

Hybrid nucleic acid nanostructures partition architectural and functional roles between ribonucleic acid(RNA)joints and deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)connectors.Nanoshapes self-assemble from nucleic acid modules through synergistic stabilization of marginally stable base pairing interactions within circularly closed polygons.Herein,we report the development of hybrid nanoshapes that include multiple different RNA modules such as internal loop and three-way junction(3Wj)motifs.An iterative mix-and-match screening approach was used to identify suitable DNA connectors that furnished stable nanoshapes for combinations of different RNA modules.The resulting complex multicomponent RNA-DNA hybrid nanoshapes were characterized by atomic force microscopy(AFM)imaging.Our research provides proof of concept for modular design,assembly and screening of RNA-DNA hybrid nanoshapes as building blocks for complex extended nucleic acid materials with features at the sub-10 nm scale.

A novel and substantive approach to teaching the diagnostic elements of pulmonary pathology. Drawing on 263 challenging, yet exemplary, referral cases taken from files collected over 20 years by internationally renowned lung pathologist, Dr. eugene Mark, the authors introduce his state-of-the-art approach to the interpretation of pulmonary pathology. They illustrate the principles of his diagnostic approach with high-resolution color images found on the CD accompanying the book. This Lung Pathology Atlas on CD-ROM contains the histological record of each case, usually as five-color images that are representative of the histology seen on the slides that were sent to Dr. Mark in consultation, with the pathology being described in his letters to the referring pathologists. This text includes the primary and/or differential diagnosis and the pertinent histological features of each case, as well as clinical history, when available. Key words or phrases in the text are highlighted and digitally hyperlinked to associated images or regions of interest within those images to assist the readers in their correlation. The CD allows readers to differentiate subtle differences in histology when separating one disease entity from another and to broaden their understanding of the natural history of the disease through examples of medical lung disease in different phases of progression

The common approach to find co-regulated genes is to cluster genes based on gene expression. However, due to the limited information present in any dataset, genes in the same cluster might be co-expressed but not necessarily co-regulated. In this paper, we propose to integrate known transcription factor binding site information and gene expression data into a single clustering scheme. This scheme will find clusters of co-regulated genes that are not only expressed similarly under the measured conditions, but also share a regulatory structure that may explain their common regulation. We demonstrate the utility of this approach on a microarray dataset of yeast grown under different nutrient and oxygen limitations. Our integrated clustering method not only unravels many regulatory modules that are consistent with current biological knowledge, but also provides a more profound understanding of the underlying process. The added value of our approach, compared with the clustering solely based on gene expression, is its ability to uncover clusters of genes that are involved in more specific biological processes and are evidently regulated by a set of transcription factors.

AIM To determine whether three-dimensional(3D) reconstruction from conventional magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) is able to accurately detect a meniscal tear, and define the configuration.METHODS Thirty-three patients' 3T MRI scan data were collected and sagittal uni-planar 3D reconstructions performed from the preoperative MRI. There were 24 meniscal tears in 24 patients, and nine controls. All patients had arthroscopic corroboration of MRI findings. Two independent observers prospectively reported on all 33 reconstructions. Meniscal tear presence or absence was noted, and tear configuration subsequently categorised as either radial, bucket-handle, parrot beak, horizontal or complex.RESULTS Identification of control menisci or meniscal tear presence was excellent(Accuracy: observer 1 = 90.9%; observer 2 = 81.8%). Of the tear configurations, bucket handle tears were accurately identified(Accuracy observer 1 and 2 = 80%). The remaining tear configurations were notaccurately discernable.CONCLUSION Uni-planar 3D reconstruction from 3T MRI knee scan sequences are useful in identifying normal menisci and menisci with bucket-handle tears. Advances in MRI sequencing and reconstruction software are awaited for accurate identification of the remaining meniscal tear configurations.

Prospective study of Centurion~？ versus Infiniti~？ phacoemulsification systems： surgical and visual outcomes

AIM： To evaluate surgical outcomes（SOs） and visual outcomes（VOs） in cataract surgery comparing the Centurion？ phacoemulsification system（CPS） with the Infiniti？ phacoemulsification system（IPS）.METHODS： Prospective, consecutive study in a singlesite private practice. Totally 412 patients undergoing cataract surgery with either the CPS using the 30-degree balanced？ tip（n=207） or the IPS using the 30-degree Kelman？ tip（n=205）. Intraoperative and postoperative outcomes were documented prospectively up to one month follow-up. Nuclear sclerosis（NS） grade, cumulated dissipated energy（CDE）, preoperative corrected distance visual acuity（CDVA）, and CDVA at one month were recorded. RESULTS： CDE was 13.50% less in the whole CPS compared with the whole IPS subcohort. In eyes with NS grade III or greater, CDE was 28.87% less with CPS（n=70） compared with IPS（n=44）（P=0.010）. Surgical complications were not statistically different between the two subcohorts（P=0.083）, but in the one case of vitreous loss using the CPS, CDVA of 6/4 was achieved at one month. The mean CDVAs（VOs） at one month for NS grade III and above cataracts were-0.17 log MAR（6/4.5） in the CPS and-0.15 log MAR（6/4.5） in the IPS subcohort respectively（P=0.033）.CONCLUSION： CDE is 28.87% less, and VOs are significantly improved, in denser cataracts in the CPS compared with the IPS. The authors recommend the CPS for cases with denser nuclei.

Endothelium,acting as a barrier,protects tissues against factors that provoke insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and itself responds to the insult of insulin resistance inducers with altered function.Endothelial insulin resistance and vascular dysfunction occur early in the evolution of insulin resistance-related disease,can co-exist with and even contribute to the development of metabolic insulin resistance,and promote vascular complications in those affected.The impact of endothelial insulin resistance and vascular dysfunction varies depending on the blood vessel size and location,resulting in decreased arterial plasticity,increased atherosclerosis and vascular resistance,and decreased tissue perfusion.Women with insulin resistance and diabetes are disproportionately impacted by cardiovascular disease,likely related to differential sex-hormone endothelium effects.Thus,reducing endothelial insulin resistance and improving endothelial function in the conduit arteries may reduce atherosclerotic complications,in the resistance arteries lead to better blood pressure control,and in the microvasculature lead to less microvascular complications and more effective tissue perfusion.Multiple diabetes therapeutic modalities,including medications and exercise training,improve endothelial insulin action and vascular function.This action may delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and/or its complications,making the vascular endothelium an attractive therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes and potentially type 1 diabetes.

To better understand how model resolution affects the formation of Arctic boundary layer clouds,we investigated the influence of grid spacing on simulating cloud streets that occurred near Utqiaġvik(formerly Barrow),Alaska,on 2 May 2013 and were observed by MODIS(the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer).The Weather Research and Forecasting model was used to simulate the clouds using nested domains with increasingly fine resolution ranging from a horizontal grid spacing of 27 km in the boundary-layer-parameterized mesoscale domain to a grid spacing of 0.111 km in the large-eddy-permitting domain.We investigated the model-simulated mesoscale environment,horizontal and vertical cloud structures,boundary layer stability,and cloud properties,all of which were subsequently used to interpret the observed roll-cloud case.Increasing model resolution led to a transition from a more buoyant boundary layer to a more shear-driven turbulent boundary layer.The clouds were stratiform-like in the mesoscale domain,but as the model resolution increased,roll-like structures,aligned along the wind field,appeared with ever smaller wavelengths.A stronger vertical water vapor gradient occurred above the cloud layers with decreasing grid spacing.With fixed model grid spacing at 0.333 km,changing the model configuration from a boundary layer parameterization to a large-eddy-permitting scheme produced a more shear-driven and less unstable environment,a stronger vertical water vapor gradient below the cloud layers,and the wavelengths of the rolls decreased slightly.In this study,only the large-eddy-permitting simulation with gird spacing of 0.111 km was sufficient to model the observed roll clouds.
