Cellulose acetate nitrate(CAN) was used as an insensitive energetic binder to improve the insensitive munitions(Im) properties of gun propellants to replace the m1 propellant used in 105 mm artillery *** contains the energetic nitro groups found in nitrocellulose(NC),but also acetyl functionalities,which lowered the polymer's sensitivity to heat and shock,and therefore improved its Im properties relative to *** formulation,development and small-scale characterization testing of several CAN-based propellants were *** formulations,using insensitive energetic solid fillers and high-nitrogen modifiers in place of nitramine were *** small scale characterization testing,such as closed bomb testing,small scale sensitivity,thermal stability,and chemical compatibility were *** mechanical response of the propellants under high-rate uni-axial compression at,hot,cold,and ambient temperatures were also *** diameter testing,hot fragment conductive ignition(HFCI) tests were done to evaluate the propellants' responses to thermal and shock *** the propellant chemical composition,theoretical predictions of erosivity were *** the small scale test results were utilized to down-select the promising CAN based formulations for large scale demonstration testing such as the ballistic performance and fragment impact testing in the105 mm m67 artillery charge *** test results completed in the small and large scale testing are discussed.

Inhibition of Aluminium Corrosion Using <i>Carica papaya</i>Leaves Extract in Sulphuric Acid

Inhibition of aluminium corrosion using C. papaya leaves extract in 1.0 m H2SO4 was investigated by using gravimetric analysis at various concentrations and temperatures: 303 K, 313 K and 323 K. Characterization was done by using Scanning Electron microscope (SEm) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Results show that, inhibiting ability of the extract was due to its adsorption onto the metal surface through Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic (Gibbs energy, entropy and heats of adsorption) and kinetic parameters (activation energy and entropy of activation) were also determined. All of these agreed to physical adsorption of inhibitor onto the aluminium surface.

Cold Agglutinin Disease Prevalence and Immunoglobulin m levels in Patients with Splenomegaly from Endemic Areas for malaria in Rwanda

Background: Inhabitants from malaria endemic zones often present with enlarged spleen, mainly due to hyper reactive malarial splenomegaly (HmS), and it is seen more commonly associated with elevated levels of Immunoglobulin m (Igm). Cold agglutinin disease is an acquired autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) that is usually due to cold-reacting Igm autoantibodies directed against red cell antigens. The study was conducted in response to the observed high frequency of transfusion dependent anemia in patients with splenomegaly from malaria endemic zones in southern province of Rwanda. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of cold agglutinin disease and to assess the distribution of Igm antibodies among these patients. methodology: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted over a period of six months from June 2016 to December 2016. The study enrolled adult population from malaria endemic areas of the southern province of Rwanda with unexplained splenomegaly. Blood samples for testing Igm levels, cold agglutinin, FBC, and markers of hemolysis were collected from peripheral health settings and analyzed at the laboratory of Butare University Teaching Hospital. Results: During the study period, we enrolled 188 participants with enlarged spleen. One hundred twenty-five (66%) were females and 34% were males. The mean (±SD) age of the study participants was 35.6 ± 15.2 years. Out of 188 participants, only 4.8% were found with significantly positive Cold Agglutinin Titer (CAT) (≥1:64) and 84% of participants were found to have elevated serum Igm level. Hemoglobin level, white blood count and platelets count decrease with severity of splenomegaly, while Igm level increases with spleen size. Conclusion: Among patients with splenomegaly from malaria endemic areas, Igm levels correlate with the stages of splenomegaly while cold agglutinin disease plays a small role in the etiolo

Chiral Recognition of Binaphthyl Derivatives with L-Undecyl Leucine Surfactants in the Presence of Sodium and Lysine Counterions

This study investigates the effect of counterions on the chiral recognition of 1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine (BNA) and 1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogenphosphate (BNP) enantiomers when using an amino acid-based surfactant undecanoyl L-leucine (und-Leu) as the chiral pseudostationary phase in capillary electrophoresis. The effects of using two different counterions (sodium and lysine) on the chiral recognition of binaphthyl derivatives were compared at varying pH conditions. The enantiomeric separation of BNA and BNP enantiomers via capillary electrophoresis, using und-Leu as the chiral recognition medium, significantly improved the enantiomeric resolution in capillary electrophoresis at pH 7 when using Lysine counterions as compared to using sodium as the counterion. more specifically, at a surfactant concentration of 45 mm, at pH 7, a significant increase in chiral selectivity was observed when lysine was used as the counterion compared to sodium. The enantiomeric resolution of BNA and BNP increased by 6-fold and 1.1-fold, respectively, in capillary electrophoresis experiments when lysine was utilized as the counterion compared to using sodium. Furthermore, the retention factor of BNA and BNP enantiomers also increased approximately 3.5-fold and 4-fold, respectively, in the presence of lysine counterions as compared to using sodium counterions. When running buffer in capillary electrophoresis was increased to pH 11, the resolution and retention factors were nearly identical when comparing the effects of the sodium and lysine counterions. This signifies the important role of lysine’s positive net charge on chiral recognition. This study provides insight into the potential advantages of using cationic, pH-dependent counterions such as lysine to significantly improve the chiral recognition of binaphthyl derivatives when using chiral anionic surfactants as the pseudostationary phase in capillary electrophoresis.

Pharmacotechnical and Chemical Study of Paracetamol Sold in Kinshasa-DR Congo: Comparative Quality Assessment of Five Brands

Paracetamol/Acetaminophen was assessed in different 5 brands comparatively to study its physicochemical and pharmaceutical parameters. We also evaluated the similarity among those brands. Widely used as an antipyretic and analgesic agent to cure fever and pain, the therapeutic efficacy of this product depends on both physicochemical and pharmaceutical qualities which include its conformity to standard specifications according to the active ingredient dosage in the formulation. This research work aimed to assess comparatively 5 paracetamol brands tablet form sold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (particularly in Kinshasa), on their physicochemical and pharmaceutical tests conformities compared to the standard specifications. Based on tests, we evaluated the uniformity of weight, disintegration time, friability, crushing strength (hardness), and the active ingredient dosage per brand. The tests were performed using the SotaxTm apparatus according to standard methods following the pharmacopoeia protocols. And according to the performed tests, only the fifth brand of Paracetamol coded P5 did not satisfy the friability test. About the hardness test, we have also observed the unconformity of three brands (P1, P2, and P3) while both P4 and P5 satisfied the test. This leads us to conclude that among all the studied brands, only P5 satisfy to all the tests either pharmacotechnically or chemically (identification and dosage). And this study allowed us to re-examine the equivalence concept between several princeps (original brand) with their generics since that similarity depends on many parameters that need to be improved during the manufacturing process including in-process analysis in all the phases of preparation to evaluate the rate of either active ingredient or inactive ingredient because each component can affect seriously the final pharmaceutical formulation quality.
