Profiling soil free-living nematodes in the Namib Desert, Namibia

functional structure and diversity of soil free-living nematodes in a desert environment depend on plant gender and sampling *** objective of this study was to compare the composition,abundance and tropic group of soil free-living nematodes in the upper 0–10 cm soil layer under the male and female Acanthosicyos horridus *** *** and in the inter-shrub open areas(control)in the Namib Desert,Namibia in April *** moisture,organic matter(OM)and pH was also ***-living nematodes were extracted from 100 g soil using the Baermann funnel procedure,and total number of nematodes was counted under a *** composition and diversity of soil free-living nematodes were analyzed using 18S rDNA *** indicated that a total of 67 groups,including 64 species,2 genera and 1 family were *** behavior of 58 species were identified as follows:15 bacteria-feeding species,12 fungi-feeding species,10 plant-parasite species,5 omnivorous-predator species,8 animal-parasite species,5 invertebrate-parasite species and 3 non-free-living nematodes,known as marine ***,soil free-living nematodes were found to be affected by sampling locations and plant gender,and community composition and density of these nematodes were strongly influenced by soil OM *** confirmed that spatial location and plant cover were main factors influencing the diversity of soil free-living ***,molecular tools were found to be very useful in defining the richness of soil non-free-living *** conclusion,the results elucidated the importance of biotic variables in determining the composition and abundance of soil free-living nematodes in the Namib Desert,Namibia.

AIM: To explore the role of the adaptor molecule in liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PH). METHODS: We used transgenic mice expressing an N-terminal truncated form of MORT1/fADD under the control of the albumin promoter. As previously shown, this transgenic protein abrogated CD95- and CD120a-mediated apoptosis in the liver. Cyclin A expression was detected using Western blotting. ELISA and RT-PCR were used to detect IL-6 and IL-6 mRNA, respectively. DNA synthesis in liver tissue was measured by BrdU staining. RESULTS: Resection of 70% of the liver was followed by a reduced early regenerative response in the transgenic group at 36 h. Accordingly, 36 h after hepatectomy, cyclin A expression was only detectable in wild-type animals. Consequently, the onset of liver mass restoration was retarded as measured by MRI volumetry and mortality was significantly higher in the transgenic group. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate for the first time an involvement of the death receptor molecule MORT1/ fADD in liver regeneration, beyond its well described role as part of the intracellular death signaling pathway.

Exohedral van der Waals （vdW） hybrids comprising pristine carbon nanotubes （CNTs） and C60 fullerenes are expected to enable the engineering of carbonaceous materials with tunable physical and chemical properties due to the unperturbed sp2 hybridization of the comprising allotropes. In spite of theoretical predictions, experimental realization of exohedral non-covalent hybridization of unmodified C60 fullerenes and CNTs was not reported before, probably due to the relatively strong inter-fullerene and inter-tube interactions that drive the system toward phase separation and the formation of fullerene crystals and CNTs bundles. Here we describe a two-step process for preparation of C60-CNTs hybrids. The first step is based on solution-assembly of random, 3D-networks of individual, pristine CNTs followed by fast solvent-quenching. In the second step sublimated fullerenes are deposited onto the pre-assembled networks where structural defects serve as nucleation points for fullerite nanocrystals. Annealing at low temperature （80 ℃） results in re-organization of the C6o nanocrystals into nanometric layers, forming a CNT-C6o core-shell like cylindrical hybrids. Raman characterization and the observed high mobility of the fullerenes at the CNT surface support the assumption that the exohedral hybrids are of vdW type. The approach presented here offers a pathway for preparation of exohedral hybrids with controlled nano- morphology： CNTs-networks decorated by nanometric C60 crystals and CNTs-3D-networks coated by a shell of non-covalently bonded mono- or multi-layers of C60 molecules that may serve to shape the nanomorphology of the active layer in polymer-fullerene bulk-heterojunction solar cells.

We study the dynanfics of the first hydration shell of lysozyme to determine the role of hydra- tion water that accompanies lysozyme thermal denaturation. We use nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate both the translational and rotational contributions. Data on proton self-diffusion and reorentational correlation time indicate that the kinetics of the lysozyme fold- ing/unfolding process is controlled by the dynamics of the water molecules in the first hydration shell. When the hydration water dynamics change, because of the weakening of the hydrogen bond network, the three-dimensional structure of the lysozyme is lost and denaturation is triggered. Our data indicates that at temperatures above approximately 315 K, water behaves as a simple liquid and is no longer a good solvent.

The Siberian Craton and its evolution in terms of the Rodinia hypothesis

Recent geochronological studies in southern Siberia support a Siberian assembly between 2.1 and 1.8 Ga. This broadly coincides with major orogenic events in most other Precambrian continents including Laurentia. In the Mesoproterozoic, Siberia was mainly an area of stable platform sedimentation whereas Laurentia underwent a continental growth from southeast. Lack of traces of the Grenville orogeny in Siberia suggests its peripheral position in Rodinia. The eastern （Uchur- Maya area） and western （Yenisei area） Siberian margins probably faced oceans during the Meso- and Neoproterozoic. Recent geological, geochronological, geochemical and paleomagnetic data suggest integrity of Siberia and Laurentia in the Meso- and early Neoproterozoic with the Siberian southern margin close to the northern margin of Laurentia. However, some ‘intervening＇ continental blocks were probably located between these two cratons. The 750-720 Ma igneous event was probably related to the rifting between Siberia and Laurentia and the opening of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, causing the development of a passive margin sedimentary succession in southern Siberia.

Symmetry Classification of Energy Bands in Graphene and Silicene

We present the results of the symmetry classification of the electron energy bands in graphene and silicene using group theory algebra and the tight-binding approximation. The analysis is performed both in the absence and in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss the bands merging in the Brillouin zone symmetry points and the conditions for the latter to become Dirac points.
