Effects of a sex ratio gradient on female mate-copying and choosiness in Drosophila melanogaster

In many sexually reproducing species, individuals can gather information about potential mates by observing their mating success. This behavioral pattern, that we call mate-copying, was reported in the fruit fly where females choosing between 2 males of contrasting phenotypes can build a preference for males of the phenotype they previously saw being chosen by a demonstrator female. As sex ratio is known to affect mate choice, our goal was to test whether mate-copying is also affected by encountered sex ratios. Thus, we created a gradient of sex ratio during demonstrations of mate-copying experiments by changing the number of females observing from a central arena 6 simultaneous demonstrations unfolding in 6 peripheral compartments of a hexagonal device. We also tested whether the sex ratio experienced by females during demonstrations affected their choosiness (male courtship duration and double courtship rate) in subsequent mate-choice tests. Experimental male:female sex ratio during demonstrations did not affect mate-copying indices, but positively affected the proportion of both males courting the female during mate-choice tests, as well as male courtship duration, the latter potentially explaining the former relationship. As expected, the sex ratio affected female choosiness positively, and females seem to have evolved a mate-copying ability independently of sex ratio, and a capacity to adapt their choosiness to male availability. This suggests that, as in many animal species, individuals, especially females, can adapt their mate choice depending on the current sex ratio.

Fourier analysis methods and in particular techniques based on Littlewood-Paley decomposition and paraproduct have known a growing interest recently for the study of nonlinear evolutionary equations. In this survey paper, we explain how these methods may be implemented so as to study the compresible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. We shall investigate both the initial value problem in critical Besov spaces and the low Mach number asymptotics.

Cost-effectiveness modelling of percutaneous coronary interventions in stable coronary artery disease

The objective of this study is to develop a cost-effectiveness model comparing drug eluting stents(DES) vs bare metal stent(BMS) in patients suffering of stable coronary artery disease. Using a 2-years time horizon, two simulation models have been developed: BMS first line strategy and DES first line strategy. Direct medical costs were estimated considering ambulatory and hospital costs. The effectiveness endpoint was defined as treatment success, which is the absence of major adverse cardiac events. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses were carried out using 10000 Monte-Carlo simulations. DES appeared slightly more efficacious over 2 years(60% of success) when compared to BMS(58% of success). Total costs over 2 years were estimated at 9303 € for the DES and at 8926 € for bare metal stent. Hence, corresponding mean cost-effectiveness ratios showed slightly lower costs(P < 0.05) per success for the BMS strategy(15520 €/success), as compared to the DES strategy(15588 €/success). Incremental costeffectiveness ratio is 18850 € for one additional percent of success. The sequential strategy including BMS as the first option appears to be slightly less efficacious but more cost-effective compared to the strategy including DES as first option. Future modelling approaches should confirm these results as further comparative data in stable coronary artery disease and long-term evidence become available.

Bilateral vs unilateral internal mammary revascularization in patients with left ventricular dysfunction

AIM To investigate the survival benefit of bilateral internal mammary artery(BIMA) grafts in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.METHODS Between 1996 and 2009,we performed elective,isolated,primary,multiple cardiac arterial bypass grafting in 430 consecutive patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40%. The early and long-term results were compared between 167 patients undergoing BIMA grafting and 263 patients using left internal mammary artery(LIMA)-saphenous venous grafting(SVG).RESULTS The mean age of the overall population was 60.1 ± 15 years. In-hospital mortality was not different between the two groups(7.8% vs 10.3%,P = 0.49). Early postoperative morbidity included myocardial infarction(4.2% vs 3.8%,P = 0.80),stroke(1.2% vs 3.8%,P = 0.14),and mediastinitis(5.3% vs 2.3%,P = 0.11). At 8-year follow-up,Kaplan-Meier-estimated survival(74.2% vs 58.9%,P = 0.02) and Kaplan-Meier-estimated event-free survival(all cause deaths,myocardial infarction,stroke,target vessel revascularization,heart failure)(61.7% and 41.1%,P < 0.01) were significantly higher in the BIMA group compared with the LIMA-SVG group in univariate analysis. The propensity score matching analysis confirmed that BIMA grafting is a safe revascularization procedure but there was no long term survival(P = 0.40) and event-free survival(P = 0.13) in comparison with LIMA-SVG use.CONCLUSION Our longitudinal analysis suggests that BIMA grafting can be performed with acceptable perioperative mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.

慢性口服抗凝药物对急性心肌梗死患者治疗和预后的影响:RICO调查资料

Objective: To determine the prevalence of chronic oral anticoagulant drug treatment(COA) among patients with acute myocardial infarction(AMI) and its impact on management and outcome. Methods: All patients with ST segment elevation AMI on the RICO(a French regional survey for AMI) database were included in this analysis. COA was defined as continuous use ≥48 hours before AMI. Results: Among the 2112 patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction(STEMI), 93(4%) patients were receiving COA. These patients were older and more likely to have a history of hypertension, diabetes and prior myocardial infarction than patients without COA. In addition, fewer patients who received COA underwent reperfusion therapy or received an antiplatelet agent(aspirin/thienopyridines). Moreover, patients receiving COA experienced a higher incidence of in-hospital major adverse events(death, recurrent myocardial infarction or major bleeding, p=0.005). Multivariate analysis showed that only ejection fraction, current smoking and multiple vessel disease, but not COA, were independent predictive factors for major adverse events. In contrast, COA was an independent predictive factor for heart failure when adjusted for age, diabetes, creatinine clearance, reperfusion, heparin and glycoprotein Ⅱb/Ⅲa inhibitors(odds ratio 2.06, CI 95%1.23 to 3.43, p=0,005). Conclusion: In this population based registry, patients with STEMI with prior use of COA constituted a fairly large group(4%) with an overall higher baseline risk profile than that of patients without COA. Fewer in the COA group received reperfusion therapy or aggressive antithrombotic treatment and they experienced more adverse in-hospital outcomes. Thus, further studies are warranted to develop specific management strategies for this high risk group.
