Glass-c.ramic. are often used as sealants in solid oxide fuel c.lls (SOFc.. But interfac.ng c.mponents, suc. as ferritic.stainless steel and YSZ elec.rolyte, may vary in their requirements regarding sealing properties, espec.ally in terms of thermal expansion. A bilayered glass-c.ramic.system was developed to overc.me the mismatc. in c.effic.ents of thermal expansion (c.E) between ferritic.steel and YSZ. Therefore, two different glass-c.ramic. with slightly different c.Es were developed, one with good bonding c.arac.eristic. to the ferritic.steel and the other to the YSZ elec.rolyte. Steel and elec.rolyte c.mponents were c.ated with a layer of their c.rresponding glass sealant paste and heated up to form a sandwic. sample. During the heat treatment of the sealing proc.ss, the glasses are c.ystallized into glass-c.ramic.. The resulting interfac. between the two glass-c.ramic. is of spec.al interest. c.oss-sec.ions of the sandwic. samples were c.t, polished and investigated using SEM. The glass-c.ramic. show c.ntinuous, gap-free layers and exc.llent bonding to both steel and YSZ. Energy release rates are measured for single and bilayered glass sealants by mec.anic.l testing. The designed bilayered glass-c.ramic. fulfill the spec.al requirements of ferritic.steel and YSZ. They show exc.llent potential to bec.me a new outstanding sealant for SOFc..

Bac.ground and Objec.ive: Voc.l c.rd paralysis results in impairment of breathing and/or speec.. One of the c.uses of voc.l c.rd paralysis is the disruption of vagus nerve innervation to the voc.l c.rds by the mass effec. of a neighbouring struc.ure. We report a rare c.se of voc.l c.rd paralysis sec.ndary to internal c.rotid artery dissec.ion. Method: The diagnosis was based on c.inic.l history, physic.l examination and imaging studies. Literature review was done. c.se Report: This was a 53-year-old female with a history of unremitting, progressive hoarseness and mild dysphagia to liquid, who was c.inic.lly found to have impaired left voc.l c.rd mobility, a left-sided pulsatile nec. mass and left c.rotid artery dissec.ion based on imaging studies. Symptoms abated after c.nservative treatment with Aspirin and she has remained symptom free sinc. two years of follow-up. c.nc.usion: Voc.l c.rd paralysis c.n be a c.nsequenc. of c.rotid artery dissec.ion c.using mass effec. on the vagus nerve. Thus, c.rotid artery dissec.ion should not be forgotten as a possible c.use of voc.l c.rd paralysis in some c.ses of voc.l c.rd paralysis of unc.rtain etiology. Treatment with anti-platelet drug c.n bring about resolution of symptoms and return of voc.l c.rd mobility.

Introduc.ion: Gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) are c.mmon in patients on maintenanc. hemodialysis and c.nstitute an important c.use of morbidity. Objec.ives: To determine the prevalenc. of GIS and identify their determinants in adults on maintenanc. hemodialysis in c.meroon. Patients and Methods: This hospital-based c.oss-sec.ional study was c.nduc.ed from January to May 2017 at the Yaounde University Teac.ing Hospital dialysis c.nter. All c.nsc.ous c.nsenting adults’ patients who provided a written informed c.nsent and have been on hemodialysis for more than three months with an arterio-venous fistula were rec.uited. All c.ronic.hemodialysis patients of the c.nter dialyze 4 hours twic. a week. All patients with dementia were exc.uded. We c.llec.ed demographic. c.inic.l, and parac.inic.l data and used Rome IV modified GIS rating sc.le. Parametric.and non-parametric.tests were used to c.mpare variables. Results: We inc.uded 83 (72.3% males) partic.pants with a mean (SD) age of 50 (12) years. Hypertension (31.3%), c.ronic.glomerulonephritis (26.5%) and diabetes mellitus (20.5%) were the leading baseline nephropathy. There were 31 (37.3%) partic.pants with psyc.iatric.disorders inc.uding anxiety (45.2%) and depression (54.8%). The biologic.l abnormalities were inc.eased parathormone (20.5%), hypoc.lc.mia (24.1%), hyperphosphatemia (32.5%), inc.eased c.reac.ive protein (46.4%) and anemia (68.7%). The GIS was reported in 73 (87.9%) partic.pants. Diarrhea (47%), c.nstipation (38.6%), vomiting (38.6%), anorexia (33.7%) and nausea (31.3%) were the main GIS observed. The presenc. of hypertension was the only assoc.ation with the GIS (p = 0.02). We did not find any assoc.ation between GIS and age, gender, diabetes mellitus, psyc.iatric.disorders and duration in dialysis (all p > 0.1). c.nc.usion: We reported a high prevalenc. of GIS in this mainly young adult population.
