Economic Assessment for Optimum Wind Farm Investment Connected to a Distrib.tion System

Decarb.nization of electricity industry for the goal of sustainab.lity success has resulted in large investment in alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, b.omass. Although these energy resources are sustainab.e and have the potential of reducing the world carb.n foot print, there are costs associated with its utilization. In recent time, electricity from alternative energy sources like wind and solar are not cost competitive with electricity from the conventional power plant. This paper is aimed at investigating the optimum investment in a typical wind farm project using a TSA （time series analysis） alongside simple economic tool, AAP （annual annuity payment） model. This study involves a year round analysis of （8,760h） at different wind farm capacity connected to a 132/33kV DS （distrib.tion system）. It also focused on digressing from the technical and environmental b.nefits to financial assessment of increasing wind generation capacity in the DS. Indeed, this development presents a risk of investment to the stakeholders which necessitates proper scrutiny and to ensure profitab.lity of the venture. The level of capital cost along with operation and maintenance （OM） costs are either financed b. private or pub.ic sectors on wind farm with the sole aim of achieving the ROI （return-on-investment）. The results ob.ained from this study shows the possib.e ROI is not proportional to the wind capacity invested. Also, a sensitivity analysis conducted revealed the profit derived from wind farm is more responsive to the investment/capital cost and the price at which the electricity is b.ing sold.

Electricity network is a very complex entity that comprises several components like generators, transmission lines, loads among others. As technologies continue to evolve, the complexity of the electricity network has also increased as more devices are b.ing connected to the network. To understand the physical laws governing the operation of the network, techniques such as optimal power flow (OPF), Economic dispatch (ED) and Security constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) were developed. These techniques have b.en used extensively in network operation, planning and so on. However, an in-depth presentation showcasing the merits and demerits of these techniques is still lacking in the literature. Hence, this paper intends to fill this gap. In this paper, Economic dispatch, optimal power flow and security-constrained optimal power flow are applied to a 3-b.s test system using a linear programming approach. The results of the ED, OPF and SC-OPF are compared and presented.

Assessment of Geologic Controls of Flooding in Parts of obio/AKPOR L.G.A., Rivers State, Nigeria

Flooding of Municipal areas is a frequent environmental occurrence in Rivers State that occurs when rainfall runoff meets land surfaces with low water ab.orb.ng capacity or when it overwhelms drainage *** order to assess the flood situation in the study area,an integrated method which involves field-measurement,geographic information system(GIS),lab.ratory analysis of soil samples and topographic studies were *** elevation model of the study area reveals that the flooded areas are situated in areas with elevations lower than its surrounding,thereb. acting as a natural b.sin to retain flood waters after *** holes were drilled to depth of 3 m to ob.ain soil samples at 1 m sampling interval,from which lab.ratory analysis was carried out to determine some geotechnical parameters such as soil’s particle size,specific gravity,b.lk density,porosity,moisture content,permeab.lity and hydraulic *** of the analysis show that permeab.lity,hydraulic conductivity and porosity diminishes with respect to *** soil in the flooded areas have high fines content(silt and clay),high b.lk density which increase with depth and a specific gravity that is typical of organic rich soils that contain sand mixed with a considerab.e amount of *** Nkpolu,mean permeab.lity rates of 0.003 cm/sec,0.009 cm/sec and 0.033 cm/sec were ob.ained at 1,2 and 3 m *** Eneka,mean permeab.lity rates of 0.011 cm/sec,0.018 cm/sec and 0.014 cm/sec were ob.ained at 1,2 and 3m respectively,while at Rukpokwu,mean Permeab.lity rates of 0.021 cm/sec was ob.ained at 1 m,while 0.006 cm/sec was ob.ained at 2 and 3 m *** mean hydraulic conductivity for the locations under study is of the order of 10-4 ft/*** study has shown that the flooded areas are located in low lying urb.n areas which act as b.sins,therefore,the top soil is crusted with highly compacted soil horizons *** high and frequent rainfall in the region which genera
