Objective:To investigate three tropical plant materials - clove seeds[syzygium aromalicum(s. aromaticum)],bitter kola fruits[Garcinia kola(***)]and tobacco leaves(Nicotiana species) as potential targeted killers of streptococcus mutans(***),a cavity-causing bacterium(gram-positive, facultative anaerobe) that resides in a multispecies microbial community(dental plaque) for the treatment of dental caries(tooth decay).Methods:Thirty one(31) teeth samples were collected from patients with obvious signs of tooth decay(swollen gum,weak or fallen tooth,etc.) using sterile swab *** samples were collected from two major denial clinics in Nsukka, Enugu state,Nigeria and investigated by spread inoculation onto sterile blood agar and Mueller Hinton agar(MHA) respectively and incubated at 37℃for 24 *** discrete colonies obtained were further re-inoculated onto sterile Mitis salivarius agar(MsA) plates and incubated as above. The isolates were characterized by gram staining and calalase *** leaves,clove seeds and bitter kola fruits were ground into powder,extracted with three different solvents(n-hexane, hot water and ethanol),filtered,dried and stored in clean containers,corked and kept until used. The plant extracts were investigated for phytochemistry,minimum inhibitory concentration(MiC), minimum cidal concentration(MCC)and compared with some conventional antibiotics commonly used against tooth *** sensitivity test was also carried *** results were statistically ***:The extracts showed varied phytochemical composition but most abundantly the *** result also shows that females(16) have more tooth decay than males(15) and that 16 samples were very bloody while 15 were slightly *** microbial characterization showed that 18 samples were catalase-positive indicating the presence of s. mutans while 13 were catalase-negative suspected to be staphylococcus *** Gram reaction confirmed 13 Gram-negative and

invasive fungal diseases(iFD)impact morbidity,mortality,hospital stay and healthcare costs in critically ill patients,constituting an unmet medical need.1 Pathogenic fungi rarely cause iFD in immunocompetent individuals but become life-threatening in cases of immunodeficiency,young infants,disrupted mucosal barriers or polyantibiotic therapy,highlighting the role of immune surveillance in iFD control.^(2)

Objectives:Clinical experience is an essential component of nurse practitioner(NP)education that relies heavily on *** and retention of preceptors is challenging due to many variables that can affect NP education and *** surveyed Canadian NP programs to understand their preceptorship structures,how they support preceptorship,and to identify gaps and challenges to recruitment and retention of ***:An 18-item survey,developed by the NP Education interest Group,was distributed to 24 universities across 10 Canadian *** validity and reliability was assessed by experienced NPs and NP *** were analyzed using relative frequency statistics and thematic *** consisted of administrative staff and/or faculty designated as responsible for recruitment and retention of NP ***:seventeen returned surveys were analyzed and demonstrated more similarities than differences across Canada's NP programs,particularly related to barriers affecting recruitment and retention of *** findings identified NP programs have too many students for the number of available clinical sites/preceptors,resulting in overutilization,burnout,or refusal to take *** with other health disciplines for clinical placements was identified as a challenge to *** commented they lack time to recruit,provide follow-up,offer support,or seek preceptors'feedback due to competing work *** identified the need for standardized funding for preceptor remuneration and recognition across the ***:The findings suggest the need for exploring a wider intraprofessional collaboration among graduate NP programs/faculty,clinical placement sites,and NPs to facilitate the recruitment and retention of preceptors.

surface recombination represents a handicap for high-efficiency solar cells. This is especially important for nanowire array solar cells, where the surface-to-volume ratio is greatly enhanced. Here, the effect of different passivation materials on the effective recombination and on the device performance is experimentally analyzed. Our solar cells are large area top-down axial n-p junction silicon nanowires fabricated by means of Near-Field Phase-shift Lithography （NF-PsL）. We report an efficiency of 9.9% for the best cell, passivated with a siO2/siNx stack. The impact of the presence of a surface fixed charge density at the silicon/oxide interface is studied.

AiM： To examine genetic variation of nucleotide oligomerization domain 1 （NOD/） and NOD2, their respective influences on Crohn＇s disease phenotype and gene-gene interactions. METHODs：（ND1＋32656＊1） NOD1 polymorphism and sNPs, sNP12 and sNP13 of NOD2 were analyzed in 97 patients and 50 controls. NOD2 variants were determined by reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. NOD1 genotyping and NOD2 variant confirmation were performed by specific amplification and sequencing. REsULTs： The distribution of NOD1 polymorphism in patients was different from controls （P = 0.045） and not altered by existence of NOD2 mutations. in this cohort, 30.92% patients and 6% controls carried at least one NOD2 variant （P 〈 0.001） with R702W being the most frequent variant. Presence of at least one NOD2 mutation was inversely associated with colon involvement （9.09% with colon vs 36.4% with ileal or ileocolonic involvement, P = 0.04） and indicative of risk of penetrating disease （52.63% with penetrating vs 25.64% with non-penetrating or stricturing behavior, P = 0.02）. L1007finsC and double NOD2 mutation conferred the highest risk for severity of disease （26.3% with penetrating disease vs 3.8% with non-penetrating or stricturing behavior presented L1007finsC, P = 0.01 and 21.0% with penetrating disease vs 2.5% with non-penentrating or stricturing behavior carried double NOD2 mutation, P = 0.007）. Exclusion of patients with NOD2 mutations from phenotype/NODl-genotype analysis revealed higher prevalence of ＊1＊1 genotype in groups of younger age at onset and colonic location.CONCLUsiON： This study suggests population differences in the inheritance of risk NOD1 polymorphism and NOD2 mutations. Although no interaction between NOD1-NOD2 was noticed, a relationship between disease location and Nod-like receptor molecules was established.

ischemic heart disease (iHD) is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death (sCD) and often non-thrombosed severe coronary stenoses with or without myocardial scars are *** dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (LDAC) is a life-threating rare disease which has been more thoroughly studied in the last *** macroscopic study of an sCD victim was conducted and re-evaluated 9years *** cardiological work-up in his firstdegree relatives initially comprised an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an *** they were re-evaluted 9years later,a cardiac magnetic resonance,an ECG-monitoring,an exercise testing and a genetic study were performed and the pedigree was extended *** 2008,an iHD was suspected in the sports-triggered sCD of a 37-year-old man upon the postmortem (75% stenosis of the left main and circumflex coronary arteries;the subepicardial left ventricular fibrofatty infiltration with mild myocardial degeneration was assumed to be a past myocardial infarction).No cardiomyopathy was identified in any of the two proband's *** years thereafter,distant relatives were diagnosed with LDAC due to a pathogenic desmoplakin *** reanalysis of the two sisters showed ventricular arrhythmias in one of them without structural heart involvement and the reviewed postmortem of the proband was reclassified as LDAC based on the fibrofatty infiltration;both were mutation *** completion of the family study on 19 family members yielded one sCD due to LDAC (the proband),three living patients diagnosed with LDAC (two with a defibrillator),one mutation carrier without structural ventricular involvement,and 14 healthy relatives (who were discharged) with a very good co-segregation of the *** rare,LDAC exists and sometimes its differential diagnosis with iHD has to be *** previous postmortem misdiagnoses can help family screening to further prevent sCDs.

Justicia secunda Vahl leaf fraction protects against acetaminophen-induced liver damage in rats by alleviating oxidative stress and enhancing membrane-bound phosphatase activities

Objective: To investigate the effect of Justicia secunda Vahl leaf fraction against acetaminophen-induced oxidative damage in the liver of ***: in vitro antioxidant assays were performed on Justicia secunda leaf fractions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analytical method was done. Experimental animals were orally administered with 2 g/kg ***. acetaminophen, 100-500 mg/kg ***. Justicia secunda ethyl acetate leaf fraction(JsELF), and 100 mg/kg ***. silymarin. Blood and liver were collected to measure hepatic, oxidative stress, and membrane-bound phosphatase markers. Results: JsELF had significantly(Pigh total antioxidant capacity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. JsELF-treated animals had reduced plasma hepatic enzymes, serum C-reactive protein, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein while hepatic superoxide dismutase, catalase, and reduced glutathione levels were elevated compared with untreated control. Membrane-bound phosphatase activities were improved in JsELF-treated animals. GC-Ms detected tentatively 7 antioxidants and 4 hepatoprotective ***: JsELF could protect against oxidative stress and improve membrane-bound phosphatase activity in rats with acetaminophen-induced hepatic damage.

Plant water use efficiency(WUE) is becoming a key issue in semiarid areas, where crop production relies on the use of large volumes of water. improving WUE is necessary for securing environmental sustainability of food production in these areas. Given that climate change predictions include increases in temperature and drought in semiarid regions,improving crop WUE is mandatory for global food production. WUE is commonly measured at the leaf level, because portable equipment for measuring leaf gas exchange rates facilitates the simultaneous measurement of photosynthesis and transpiration. However,when those measurements are compared with daily integrals or whole-plant estimates of WUE, the two sometimes do not agree. scaling up from single-leaf to whole-plant WUE was tested in grapevines in different experiments by comparison of daily integrals of instantaneous water use efficiency [ratio between CO2assimilation(AN) and transpiration(E); AN/E] with midday AN/E measurements, showing a low correlation, being worse with increasing water stress. We sought to evaluate the importance of spatial and temporal variation in carbon and water balances at the leaf and plant levels. The leaf position(governing average light interception) in the canopy showed a marked effect on instantaneous and daily integrals of leaf WUE. Night transpiration and respiration rates were also evaluated, as well as respiration contributions to total carbon balance. Two main components were identified as filling the gap between leaf and whole plant WUE: the large effect of leaf position on daily carbon gain and water loss and the large flux of carbon losses by dark respiration. These results show that WUE evaluation among genotypes or treatments needs to be revised.
