After a brief reference to the quantum Zeno effect, a quantum Zeno paradox is formulated. Our starting point is the usual version of Time Dependent Perturbation Theory. Although this theory is supposed to account for transitions between stationary states, we are led to conclude that such transitions cannot occur. Paraphrasing Zeno, they are nothing but illusions. Two solutions to the paradox are introduced. The first as a straightforward application of the postulates of Orthodox Quantum Mechanics;the other is derived from a Spontaneous Projection Approach to quantum mechanics previously formulated. Similarities and differences between both solutions are highlighted. A comparison between the two versions of quantum mechanics, supporting their corresponding solutions to the paradox, shines a new light on quantum weirdness. It is shown, in particular, that the solution obtained in the framework of Orthodox Quantum Mechanics is defective.

The nominal group is an important aspect of English and other languages and requires specific attention because of its complex structure and sequence. This study examines how sequencing affects users＇ understanding and interpretation of the English nominal group and attempts to prescribe guidelines to the different challenges which the complex ordering of the nominal group poses to users of English as a second language. The findings of the study indicate that the complex ordering of the nominal group has a significant impact on their semantic effects in any discourse, and many of the difficulties users of English as a second language are faced with have to do with lack of adequate understanding of the structure and usage of the nominal group. Some of these problems can be addressed through a comprehensive study and examination of linguists＇ explanation of the nominal group and practical application of their guidelines. A functional approach to the study of the group will help second language learners of English to have a better understanding of its structure

The Alienor method has been elaborated at the beginning of the 1980s by Yves Cherruault and Arthur Guillez (1983). The following people have also greatly contributed to the improvement of this new optimization method: Blaise Somé, Gaspar Mora, Balira Konfé, Jean Claude Mazza and esther Claudine Bityé Mvondo. The basic idea consists in using a reducing transformation allowing us to simplify a multivariable optimization problem to a new optimization problem according to a single variable. The rational gestion of enterprises leads generally to the use of Operational Research, often called management science. The term Operational Research means a scientific approach to decision making, that seeks optimization in a system. Consequently, it is better to take the right decisions. Otherwise, fatal consequences can occur instantaneously [1]. Generally, we have to maximize the global profit margin, taking into account some constraints. For instance, in an integer programming problem, some or all the variables are required to be nonnegative integers. In this paper, we present new reducing transformations for global optimization in integer, binary and mixed variables as well as the applications in Boolean algebra by solving a Boolean Equation of 21 variables. The applications in Operational Research are presented on various examples, resolved by using the tabulator Excel of Microsoft.

Background: Obesity is now reported as an epidemic in many developed countries, and it is an emerging public health concern in developing, transitional, and newly developed countries. The incidence of obesity increases during adolescence and persists into adulthood and becomes irreversible. In addition to biological causes like inheritance, cultural factors (such as dietary knowledge, attitudes and behaviours), socio-demographic factors may also play a central role in the etiology of obesity. The aim of the study was to describe young adults’ knowledge and perceptions about obesity, with a focus on comprehensibility and meaningfulness of obesity in their daily lives and its health implications. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used with 96 participants aged 18 - 35 years. The respondents’ body mass indices (BMI) were calculated from self-reported weights and heights. Descriptive analytical, statistical methods were used for data analysis. Results: The youths had good knowledge about obesity, its causes and associated complications. Generally, negative attitudes toward obesity were reported. Some perceived obesity as the ideal body image among today’s youths while others perceived obesity as something that was beyond their control. Identified knowledge gaps were in the area of obesity and nutrition knowledge, food preferences and implications to health. Knowledge deficit about obesity might lead to poor health-related behaviours with its associated complications. Conclusion: There is a need to intensify community-focused health education as a preventive strategy to empower the youths to take charge of their health and change their perceptions about obesity.

Aframomum melegueta prevents the ejaculatory complications of propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroidism in sexually experienced male rats: Evidence from intravaginal and fictive ejaculations

Objective: Hypothyroidism has been claimed to generate sexual dysfunctions such as ejaculatory disorders. Aframomum melegueta is an aphrodisiac plant with pro-ejaculatory properties. We investigated the protective effects of aqueous extract(AE) and methanolic extract(ME) of A. melegueta on the ejaculatory function of hypothyroid male ***: Forty sexually experienced male rats were partitioned into 8 groups(5 rats per group) and treated for 28 d as follows: Group 1, Control;Group 2, propylthiouracil(PTU, 10 mg/kg)+ distilled water(DW,10 m L/kg);Group 3, PTU + 5% Tween 80(10 m L/kg);Group 4, PTU + bromocriptine(6 mg/kg);Group 5,PTU + AE(20 mg/kg);Group 6, PTU + AE(100 mg/kg);Group 7, PTU + ME(20 mg/kg), and Group 8,PTU + ME(100 mg/kg). On days 0, 7, 14 and 28 of treatment, each male rat was paired with primed receptive female for measurement of ejaculatory latency time(ELT) and post-ejaculatory interval(PEI) for1.5 h. On day 29, each male rat was urethane-anesthetized and the spinal cord was ***, following urethral/penile stimulations and intravenous injection of dopamine, contractions of the bulbospongiosus muscles and the intraseminal pressure were registered. After these recordings,blood was collected through the catheterization of abdominal artery and plasma was used for thyroidstimulating hormone(TSH), prolactin and testosterone ***: PTU-induced hypothyroidism was characterized by a significant elevation(P < 0.001) of plasmatic TSH and prolactin levels, but a decline(P < 0.001) in plasmatic testosterone, compared to untreated group. ELT, PEI, contractions of the bulbospongiosus muscles and the intraseminal pressure were also altered by PTU treatment. On the contrary, A. melegueta extracts elevated testosterone(AE, 100 mg/kg,P < 0.01;ME, 100 mg/kg, P < 0.05) and decreased prolactin(AE, 100 mg/kg, P < 0.05;ME, 20 mg/kg,P < 0.05) levels, compared to corresponding controls. Colorectal carcinoma （CRC） is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. In the last decade, the addition of irinotecan and oxaliplatin to standard fluorouracil-based chemotherapy regimens have set the new benchmark of survival for patients with metastatic CRC at approximately 20 too. Despite these advances in the management of CRC, there is a strong medical need for more effective and well-tolerated therapies. The dependence of tumor growth and metastasis on blood vessels makes angiogenesis a rational target for therapy. One of the major pathways involved in this process is the vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and its receptors （VEGFR）. In 2004, the first agent targeting angiogenesis, bevacizumab （BV）, was approved as an adjunct to first-line cytotoxic treatment of metastatic CRC. The role of BV as part of adjuvant treatment and in combination with other targeted therapies is the subject of ongoing trials. However, BV is associated with an increase in the risk of arterial thromboembolic events, hypertension and gastrointestinal perforations and its use must be cautious. Novel VEGFR TK inhibitors with different ranges of nanomolar potencies, selectivities, and pharmacokinetic properties are entering phase 111 trials for the treatment of cancer. Conversely, one of these novel agents, vatalanib, has been shown not to confer survival benefit in first and second-line treatment of advanced CRC. The basis of these findings is being extensively evaluated. Ongoing and new well-designed trials will define the optimal clinical application of the actual antiangiogenic agents, and, on the other hand, intensive efforts in basic research will identify new agents with different antiangiogenic approaches for the treatment of CRC. In this review we discuss and highlight current and future approaches in angiogenic targeting for CRC.

<i>In Vitro</i>Antifungal Efficacies of Maize Associated Microorganisms

Microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) were isolated from different parts of yellow maize (stem, cob, husk, leaf, root) as well as from rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil of maize using conventional microbiological techniques. A total number of twenty-six bacteria and thirteen fungi were isolated. The antagonistic efficacies of these isolates were tested against Sclerotium rolfsii, Aspergillus repens, Penicillium notatum and Pythium sp. using streak bioassay, food poisoning and dual culture techniques. None of the bacteria was antagonistic to the test fungi at 25°C on PDA using streak bioassay. However, there was reduction in the population density of the test fungi using food poisoning technique. The fungal isolates were antagonistic to the test fungi in varying degrees. Generally, S. rolfsii was susceptible to seven out of the eight fungal antagonists while P. notatum was least susceptible. The percentage reduction of S. rolfsii ranged from 40.00 ± 5.78 to 64.07 ± 2.31. Efficacies of chemical fungicides;mancozeb, camazeb and red force at 3 different concentrations— 0.05%, 0.1% and 1.0% (w/v) on the test fungi were also determined. No growth of the test fungi was observed at 1% (w/v) of all the fungicides while at lower concentration (0.05%), red force did not have any inhibitory effect. The growth of S. rolfsii was completely inhibited at 0.05% of mancozeb whereas there was reduction in mycelial growth of A. repens. Effect of inoculation time and nutrients (PDA and MEA) was determined on the antagonistic activities of Trichoderma viride. There were significant differences in inhibitory potentials of the two isolates of Trichoderma viride when pre-inoculated on the culture medium. The antagonistic potentials were more pronounced on malt extract agar than potato dextrose agar.
