Enhancing the performance of porous silicon biosensors:the interplay of nanostructure design and microfluidic integration

This work presents the development and design of aptasensor employing porous silicon(PSi)Fabry‒Pérot thin films that are suitable for use as optical transducers for the detection of lactoferrin(LF),which is a protein biomarker secreted at elevated levels during gastrointestinal(GI)inflammatory disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and chronic *** overcome the primary limitation associated with PSi biosensors—namely,their relatively poor sensitivity due to issues related to complex mass transfer phenomena and reaction kinetics—we employed two strategic approaches:First,we sought to optimize the porous nanostructure with respect to factors including layer thickness,pore diameter,and capture probe ***,we leveraged convection properties by integrating the resulting biosensor into a 3D-printed microfluidic system that also had one of two different micromixer architectures(i.e.,staggered herringbone micromixers or microimpellers)*** demonstrated that tailoring the PSi aptasensor significantly improved its performance,achieving a limit of detection(LOD)of 50 nM—which is>1 order of magnitude lower than that achieved using previously-developed biosensors of this ***,integration into microfluidic systems that incorporated passive and active micromixers further enhanced the aptasensor’s sensitivity,achieving an additional reduction in the LOD by yet another order of *** advancements demonstrate the potential of combining PSi-based optical transducers with microfluidic technology to create sensitive label-free biosensing platforms for the detection of GI inflammatory biomarkers.

Since the early 1800s vaccines have saved numerous lives by preventing lethal ***,during the past two decades,there has been growing awareness of possible adverse events associated with vaccinations,cultivating heated debates and leading to significant fluctuations in vaccination *** is therefore pertinent for the scientific community to seriously address public concern of adverse effects of vaccines to regain public trust in these important medical *** adverse reactions to vaccines may be viewed as a result of the interaction between susceptibility of the vaccinated subject and various vaccine *** the implicated mechanisms for these reactions is molecular *** mimicry refers to a significant similarity between certain pathogenic elements contained in the vaccine and specific human *** similarity may lead to immune crossreactivity,wherein the reaction of the immune system towards the pathogenic antigens may harm the similar human proteins,essentially causing autoimmune *** this review,we address the concept of molecular mimicry and its application in explaining post vaccination autoimmune *** further review the principal examples of the influenza,hepatitis B,and human papilloma virus vaccines,all suspected to induce autoimmunity via molecular ***,we refer to possible implications on the potential future development of better,safer vaccines.

Misfolding and subsequent aberrant selfassembly of certain proteins into toxic amyloid deposits are hallmarks of various diseases,most notably neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and Parkinson’s disease(Chiti and Dobson,2017).Aromatic residues in amyloidogenic proteins have been shown to be key factors in protein oligomerization and fibrilization,mostly driven byπ-π*** with aromaticity,post-translational modifications can greatly affect a protein’s solubility and conformation and,as a consequence,its propensity to aggregate.

Rapid Manufacturing of Non-Assembly Complex Micro-Devices by Microstereolithography

This paper introduces a non-assembly manufacturing case with microstereolithography technology. The design and manufacturing process of a pneumatic thrust bearing is described, and a special tessellation method is developed to further improve the capability of the manufacturing system thus bigger products can also be easily manufactured. Implemented in a layer-by-layer fashion, stereolithography has been used for the rapid manufacturing of complex devices, and it avoids the expensive assembly process in the traditional manufacturing. This paper presents that microstereolithography can produce high-resolution products with intricate details, small openings, and smooth surfaces. The potential of the microstereolithograhy technique is explored for the rapid manufacturing of small and complex objects.

SEPRAN: A Versatile Finite-Element Package for a Wide Variety of Problems in Geosciences

Numerical modelling of geological processes, such as mantle convection, flow in porous media, and geothermal heat transfer, has become quite common with the increase in computing and the availability of usable software. Today modelling these dynamical processes entails the solving of the governing equations involving the mass, momentum, energy and chemical transport. These equations represent partial differential equations and must be solved on powerful enough computers because they require sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to be useful. We describe here the salient and outstanding features of the SEPRAN software package, developed in the Netherlands, as a case study for a robust and user-friendly soft- ware, which the geological community can utilize in handling many thermal-mechanical-chemical problems found in geology, which will include geothermal situations, where many types of partial differential equations must be solved at the same time with thermodynamical input parameters.

Studying the lubrication properties of osteoarthritis(OA)synovial fluid(SF)enables an understanding of the boundary lubrication joint,mobility,and ***,tribology has never been combined with the clinical reality of the presence of worn particles within the synovial fluid and how they affect the osteoarthritic *** of the problem relates to the tribology methods studying friction by applying inadequate pin-on-disc *** this study,synovial fluid with and without worn particles was studied using a customized *** method enables opening the contact at the end of each cycle and simulates better contact conditions of a natural knee joint and can thus be applied for evaluating the severity of joint OA and the treatment given to the patient.

In this paper we give an overview of the present state of fast solvers for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized by the finite element method and linearized by Newton or Picard's *** is shown that block preconditioners form an excellent approach for the solution,however if the grids are not to fine preconditioning with a Saddle point ILU matrix(SILU) may be an attractive alternative. Second harmonic generation hotspot on a centrosymmetric smooth silver surface

Second harmonic generation(SHG)is forbidden for materials with inversion symmetry,such as bulk *** can be broken by morphological or dielectric discontinuities,yet SHG from a smooth continuous metallic surface is *** non-linear microscopy,we experimentally demonstrate enhanced SHG within an area of smooth silver film surrounded by ***-assisted SHG is locally enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared to a neighboring silver surface *** optical measurements and cathodoluminescence(CL)imaging substantiate these *** suggest that plasmonic modes launched from the edges of the nanocavities propagate onto the smooth silver film and annihilate,locally generating *** addition,we show that these hotspots can be dynamically controlled in intensity and location by altering the polarization of the incoming *** results show that switchable nonlinear hotspots can be generated on smooth metallic films,with important applications in photocatalysis,single-molecule spectroscopy and non-linear surface imaging.

Material extrusion additive manufacturing has rapidly grown in use for tissue engineering research since its adoption in the year 2000. It has enabled researchers to produce scaffolds with intricate porous geometries that were not feasible with traditional manufacturing processes. Researchers can control the structural geometry through a wide range of customisable printing parameters and design choices including material, print path, temperature, and many other process parameters. Currently, the impact of these choices is not fully understood. This review focuses on how the position and orientation of extruded filaments, which sometimes referred to as the print path, lay-down pattern, or simply'scaffold design', affect scaffold properties and biological performance. By analysing trends across multiple studies, new understanding was developed on how filament position affects mechanical properties. Biological performance was also found to be affected by filament position, but a lack of consensus between studies indicates a need for further research and understanding. In most research studies, scaffold design was dictated by capabilities of additive manufacturing software rather than free-form design of structural geometry optimised for biological requirements. There is scope for much greater application of engineering innovation to additive manufacture novel geometries. To achieve this, better understanding of biological requirements is needed to enable the effective specification of ideal scaffold geometries.
