Control in Beach and Dune sands of the Gulf of Mexico and the Role of Nearby Rivers

A sedimentological, petrographic, and geochemical study of beach, dune, and river sands was carried out along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. The main goal of this work is to show how beach and dune sands are controlled texturally, compositionally, and chemically by the nearby rivers for each beach location using a particle size analyser, a polarized microscope, a X-ray fluorescence and ICP mass spectrometer to obtain the following: grain-size values from one river (Carrizal River) are similar in range to their counterpart beach sands but not similar to the dune sands (Barra del Tordo). Rivers (Panuco and Carrizal) are compositionally controlling the quartz and feldspar contents of their counterpart beach and dune sands (i.e., Playa Miramar and Barra del Tordo). Rivers (soto La Marina River) are directly influencing the composition of the beach sands (La Pesca) based upon the total quartz content, beach and dune sands. The concentration of magnetite grain fractions (Barra del Tordo beach and dune sands) is not under the influence of the nearby river (Carrizal River). In this case the compositional influence of beach and dune sands is related to sediment discharges by other fluvial systems, redistribution of the beach and dune sands along the coast and deflation/winnowing of light minerals. The Eu positive anomaly in the beach and dune sands from the three sites (i.e. Playa Miramar, Barra del Tordo, La Pesca) is linked to an increase in the P(plagioclase)/K(potash feldspar) ratio. The (La/Lu)cn highest ratio for river sands (Carrizal River) suggests quartz enrichment compared to their beach and dune sands counterparts. The (Gd/Yb)cn ratio for one river (i.e., Carrizal River) indicates that it is low in heavy rare earth elements. HREE compared to their beach and dune sands counterparts indicates less concentration of heavy minerals as potential carriers of HREE seawards.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)is defined by recurrent and troublesome heartburn and effortless regurgitation or by the specific complications of this condition—that is,esophagitis,esophageal peptic strictures,and Barrett esophagus.1Although GERD is caused by gastric contents'reaching the esophagus,gastric juices can also reach other anatomical locations(pharynx,mouth,larynx,and airways),leading to(or worsening)extra-esophageal conditions(notably asthma)or symptoms(e.g.,wheezing,cough).1 Together with obesity,GERD is the main risk factor for gastroesophageal malignancies.

AIM: To elucidate the mechanism(s) by which s-adenosyl-L-methionine(sAM) decreases hepatitis C virus(HCV) ***: We examined the effects of sAM on viral expression using an HCV subgenomic replicon cell culture system. Huh7 HCV-replicon cells were treated with 1 mmol/L sAM for different times(24-72 h), then total RNA and proteins were isolated. c DNA was synthesized and real time-PCR was achieved to quantify HCV-RNA, superoxide dismutase 1 and 2(sOD-1, sOD-2) catalase, thioredoxin 1, methionine adenosyltransferase 1A and 2A(MAT1A, MAT2A) expression, and GAPDH and RPs18 as endogenous genes. Expression of cellular and viral protein was evaluated by western-blot analysis using antibodies vs HCV-Ns5 A, sOD-1, sOD-2, catalase, thioredoxin-1, MAT1 A, MAT2 A, GAPDH and actin. Total glutathione levels were measured at different times by Ellman's recycling method(0-24 h). Reactive oxidative species(ROs) levels were quantified by the dichlorofluorescein assay(0-48 h); Pyrrolidin dithiocarbamate(PDTC) was tested as an antioxidant control and H2O2 as a positive oxidant ***: sAM exposition decreased HCV-RNA levels 50%-70% compared to non-treated controls(24-72 h). sAM induced a synergic antiviral effect with standard IFN treatment but it was independent of IFN signaling. In addition, 1 mmol/L sAM exposition did not modify viral RNA stability, but it needs cellular translation machinery in order to decrease HCV expression. Total glutathione levels increased upon sAM treatment in HCV-replicon cells. Transcriptional antioxidant enzyme expression(sOD-1, sOD-2 and thioredoxin-1) was increased at different times but interestingly, there was no significant change in ROs levels upon sAM treatment, contrary to what was detected with PDTC treatment, where an average 40% reduction was observed in exposed cells. Positive-sense single-stranded RNA(+ssRNA)viruses,the most abundant viruses of eukaryotes in nature,require the synthesis of negative-sense RNA(-RNA)using their genomic(positive-sense)RNA(+RNA)as a template for *** on current evidence,viral proteins are translated via viral+RNAs,whereas-RNA is considered to be a viral replication intermediate without coding ***,we report that plant and animal+ssRNA viruses contain small open reading frames(ORFs)in their-RNA(reverse ORFs[rORFs]).Using turnip mosaic virus(TuMV)as a model for plant+ssRNA viruses,we demonstrate that small proteins encoded by rORFs display specific subcellularlocalizations,and confirm the presence of rORF2 in infected cells through mass spectrometry *** protein encoded by TuMV rORF2 forms punctuate granules that are localized in the perinuclear region and co-localized with viral replication *** rORF2 protein can directly interact with the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase,and mutation of rORF2 completely abolishes virus infection,whereas ectopic expression of rORF2 rescues the mutant ***,we show that several rORFs in the-RNA of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(sARs-CoV-2)have the ability to suppress type l interferon production and facilitate the infection of ve-sicular stomatitis *** addition,we provide evidence that TuMV might utilize internal ribosome entry sites to translate these small *** together,these findings indicate that the-RNA of+ssRNA vi-ruses can also have the coding capacity and that small proteins encoded therein play critical roles in viral infection,revealing a viral proteome larger than previously thought.

AIM： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a dexamethasone（DEX） intravitreal implant for diabetic macular edema（DME）.METHODs： Totally 113 eyes of 84 patients were divided in three subgroups： naive patients（n=11）, pseudophakic patients（n=72） and phakic patients（n=30）. Inclusive criterion comprised adult diabetic patients with central fovea thickening and impaired visual acuity resulting from DME for whom previous standard treatments showed no improvement in both central macular thickness（CMT） and best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） after at least 3 mo of treatment. Outcome data were obtained from patient visits at baseline and at months 1, 3, 5, 9 and 12 after the first DEX implant injection. At each of these visits, patients underwent measurement of BCVA, a complete eye examination and measurement of CMT and macular volume（MV） carried out with optical coherence tomography（OCT） images. REsULTs： seventy-three eyes（64.5%） received a single implant, 30（26.5%） received two implants and 10（9%） received three implants. At baseline, average in BCVA, CMT and MV were 43.5±20.8, 462.8±145 and 12.6±2.5 respectively. These values improved significantly at 1 mo（BCVA： 47.2±19.5, CMT： 339.6±120, MV： 11.11±1.4） and 3 mo（BCVA： 53.2±18.1, CMT： 353.8±141, MV： 11.3±1.3）（P≤0.05）. At 5 mo（BCVA： 50.9±19.8, CMT： 425±150, MV： 12.27±2.3）, 9 mo（BCVA： 48.4±17.6, CMT： 445.5±170, MV： 12.5±2.3） and 12 mo（BCVA： 47.7±18.8, CMT： 413.2±149, MV： 12.03±2.5）, improvements in the three parameters were no longer statistically significant and decreased progressively but did not reach baseline values. There were no clinical differences between subgroups. Ocular complications were ***： Patients with DEX implants show maximum efficacy at 3 mo which then declined progressively, but is still better than baseline values at the end of follow-up.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a strong genetic background and is triggered by environmental *** evidence supports CD6,a lymphocyte surface receptor mostly expressed by T cells,as a putative target in ***,a humanized anti-CD6 antibody has been assayed for the treatment of certain autoimmune disorders,including ***,we present novel evidence in mice and humans for a direct involvement of CD6 in psoriasis ***,an attenuated form of imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation was demonstrated in CD6-deficient mice,as deduced from lower epidermal thickness and local reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines,namely,***,isolated CD4+CD62L+T cells from CD6-deficient mice displayed decreased in vitro T-helper type 17 ***,a statistically significant association between CD6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(rs17824933,rs11230563 and rs12360861)and more severe forms of psoriasis was demonstrated in a cohort of 304 patients at three public hospitals from the metropolitan area of *** together,these results provide new supportive evidence of the contribution of the CD6 lymphocyte receptor in psoriasis at both experimental and clinical levels.

In this work, we propose a method to synthesize vanadium (IV) 2-benzyli-dene-1-indanone derivatives, used to prepare film structures by thermal evaporation. The complexes possess high melting point allowing the using of vacuum deposition methods. All the samples were grown at room temperature (25℃) and low deposition rates (0.4 Å/s). The surface morphology and structure of the deposited films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (sEM) and spectroscopy dispersive energy (EDs). Optical absorption studies of the complex films were performed in the 200 - 1100 nm wavelength range. The Tauc band gap (Eg) of the thin films was determined from the (αhν)1/2 vs. hν plots for indirect transitions. The vanadium (IV) complex films show optical activation energies in the range of organic semiconductors. Multilayer nylon 11/vanadium indanone devices were fabricated using ITO and silver electrodes. The d.c. electrical properties of the device were also investigated. It was found that the temperature-dependent electric current in the structure showed a semiconductor behavior. At lower voltages below 7 V, the current density in the forward direction was found to obey an ohmic I-V relationship;for higher voltages above 7 V, the conduction was dominated by a space-charge-limited (sCLC) mechanism. The electrical activation energies (Ea) of the complexes were in the 2.17 - 2.31 eV range.
