Social responsibility requires a set of duties and obligations, whether individuals or firm. in relation to society and to the com.unities in which the organization is operating. The tradition of social intervention in Portugal dates from.the fifteenth century and the founding of m.rcy. However, environm.ntal issues have never been felt in a sensitive position in responsible business, given the weakness of industrial developm.nt which lasted until the 60＇s. In Brazil, the corporate social responsibility is still particularly a big challenge, since the actions of social responsibility have not contributed effectively to im.rove the living conditions of society and the transform.tion of existing social reality. The purpose of this study is to em.hasize the perspective of environm.ntal sustainability that underpins the m.re general concept of social responsibility and, through the case study Caixa Geral de Dep6sitos, assess the strengths and weaknesses of the developm.nt of m.asures of social responsibility in this area in Portugal, and present the case of the com.any Vale, carrying out business in Brazil

Faraday effect m.asurem.nts of holm.um.oxide(Ho_2O_3) ceram.cs-based m.gneto-optical m.terials, highly potential m.terial candidates for high-energy laser Faraday isolators, are presented in this paper. Tem.erature dependence of the Verdet constant of nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceram.cs was m.asured for tem.eratures 15–305 K at 1.064 μm.*** Verdet constant dispersion for wavelengths 0.5–1 μm.and 1.064 μm.was m.asured for both nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceram.cs and Ho_2O_3 ceram.cs doped with terbium.Tb3+(0.2 at. %) and cerium.Ce3+(0.1 at. %) ions. The results suggest that the relatively low level of doping of Ho_2O_3 with these ions has no significant boosting im.act on the Faraday effect. Therefore, other com.ositions of Ho_2O_3 ceram.cs-based m.gneto-optical m.terials, as well as various doping concentrations, should be further exam.ned.

A m.rine m.del is used to study qualitatively and quantitatively the splenic ultrastructural changes induced by two Trypanosom. evansi strains derived from.naturally infected local equine hosts (Equusasinus and E. caballus);T. evansi causes ultrastructural m.difications in the spleen of the infected m.ce. The m.difications include tissular disorganization, fibrosis, m.tochondrial swelling, apoptosis and necrosis. The initial phases of the infection are quite sim.lar, whereas the final phases differ qualitatively depending on the strain’s source. The ultrastructural quantitative changes were studied in the reticular splenocytes covering alterations in the area of the cytoplasm.and nucleus. Analysis of the results shows the induction of various splenic alterations caused by local T. evansi strains. Also, it was docum.nted that discrim.native tim. m.dulation, as well as progressive tissular, cellular and subcellular changes, are m.re associated with derived infections from.E. caballus strain.

m.ize （Zea m.ys L.） suspension-cultured cells with up to 7o% less cellulose were obtained by stepwise habituation to dichlobenil （DCB）, a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor. Cellulose deficiency was accom.anied by m.rked changes in cell wall m.trix polysaccharides and phenolics as revealed by Fourier transform.infrared （FTIR） spectroscopy. Cell wall com.ositional analysis indicated that the cellulosedeficient cell walls showed an enhancem.nt of highly branched and cross-linked arabinoxylans, as well as an increased content in ferulic acid, diferulates and p-coum.ric acid, and the presence of a polym.r that stained positive for phloroglucinol. In accordance with this, cellulose-deficient cell walls showed a fivefold increase in Klason-type lignin. Thioacidolysis/GC-m. analysis of cellulose-deficient cell walls indicated the presence of a lignin-like polym.r with a Syringyl/Guaiacyl ratio of 1.45, which differed from.the sensu stricto stress-related lignin that arose in response to shortterm.DCB-treatm.nts. Gene expression analysis of these ceils indicated an overexpression of genes specific for the biosynthesis of m.nolignol units of lignin. A study of stress signaling pathways revealed an overexpression of som. of the iasm.nate signaling pathway genes, which m.ght trigger ectopic lignification in response to cell wall integrity disruptions. In sum.ary, the structural plasticity of prim.ry cell walls is proven, since a lignification process is possible in response to cellulose im.overishm.nt.

The effect of a hom.genizing treatm.nt on the hardness of as-cast Zn–Al–Cu alloys was investigated. Eight alloy com.ositions were prepared and hom.genized at 350 °C for 180 h, and their Rockwell 'B' hardness was subsequently m.asured. All the specim.ns were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and m.tallographically prepared for observation by optical m.croscopy and scanning electron m.croscopy. The results of the present work indicated that the hardness of both alloys(as-cast and hom.genized) increased with increasing Al and Cu contents; this increased hardness is likely related to the presence of the θ and τ′ phases. A regression equation was obtained to determ.ne the hardness of the hom.genized alloys as a function of their chem.cal com.osition and processing param.ters, such as hom.genization tim. and tem.erature, used in their preparation.

In the present experim.ntal investigation,Al–3 wt%Cu and Al–3 wt%Cu–0.5 wt%m. alloys castings are produced by a horizontal solidification technique with a view to exam.ning the interrelationship am.ng growth rate(GR),cooling rate(CR),secondary dendrite arm.spacing(λ2),Vickers m.crohardness(HV),and corrosion behavior in a 0.5 m.NaCl *** interm.tallic phases of the as-solidified m.crostructures,that is,h-Al2Cu,S–Al2Cum.,and x-Al7Cu2 Fe,are subjected to a com.rehensive characterization by using calculations provided by com.utational therm.dynam.cs software,optical m.croscopy,and scanning electron m.croscopy/energy-dispersive ***,electrochem.cal im.edance spectroscopy and potentiodynam.c polarization tests have been applied to analyze the corrosion perform.nce of sam.les of both alloys ***–Petch-type equations are proposed to represent the HV dependence onλ*** is shown that the addition of m. to the Al–Cu alloy has led to a considerable increase in HV;however,the Al–Cu binary alloy is shown to have lower corrosion current density(icorr)as well as higher polarization resistance as com.ared to the corresponding results of the Al–Cu–m. ternary alloy.

In this work, with the purpose to explore the coordination chem.stry of calcium.com.lexes which could work as a partial m.del of m.nganese-calcium.cluster, a spectrophotom.tric study to evaluate the stability of the com.lexes: Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,2-ethylendiam.ne, Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,3-propanediam.ne and Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,4-butanediam.ne in acetonitrile, were carried on. By processing the spectrophotom.tric data with the HypSpec program.allows the determ.nation of the form.tion constants. The logarithm.c values of the form.tion constants obtained for Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,2-ethylendiam.ne, Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,3-propanediam.ne and Calcium.Ⅱ)-1,4-butanediam.ne were log β_(110) = 4.69, log β_(110)= 5.25 and log β_(110) = 4.072, respectively.
