Lacustrine sediments accumulate pollutants that input from the lake watershed and can be released to the water column by sediment resuspension; thus, pollutants can change their bioavailability and exert adverse effects to aquatic biota. Shallow-urban lakes are particularly susceptible to receive pollutants from urban discharges and sediment resuspension. Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City, an urban-shallow lake, faces multiple problems： urban sprawl, overexploitation of aquifers, drying of springs, discharge of wastewater from treatment plants, and sediment resuspension. The aquatic biota living in this ecosystem is continuously exposed to the release of pollutants from the sediments. We assessed the risk that pollutants released from sediments from Lake Xochimilco, Touristic（TZ） and Agriculture zone（AZ）, can exert on a native amphibian species of the lake（Ambystoma mexicanum） through exposure bioassays to sediment elutriates. We evaluate alterations in the amphibian by three approaches： biochemical（level of lipid peroxidation,LPO）, cellular（ultrastructure） and the liver histology of A. mexicanum and we compare them with a batch control. Additionally, we assessed heavy metals（Pb, Cd and Hg） in *** from TZ showed the highest concentrations of the metals assessed. Organisms exposed to sediment elutriates from either study sites showed higher LPO values than control organisms（p 〈 0.05）. Organisms exposed to elutriates from the TZ showed the most conspicuous damages： hepatic vasodilation of sinusoids, capillaries with erythrocytes,leukocyte infiltration and cytoplasmic vacuolation in hepatocytes. The biological responses assessed reflected the risk that faces A. mexicanum when is exposed for prolonged periods to sediment resuspension in Lake Xochimilco.

Morphisms and Elements of Group-like Type in Weak Multiplier Bialgebras

With the purpose of providing a categorical treatment of weak multiplier bialgebras （introduced by BShm, Gomez-Torrecillas and Ldpez-Centella in 2015）, an ap- propriate notion of morphism for these algebraic objects is proposed. This allows us to define a category wmb of （regular） weak multiplier bialgebras （with a right full comultipli- cation）, containing as a full subcategory the category wba of weak bialgebras defined by BShm, Gomez-Torrecillas and Lopez-Centella in 2014. We present a great source of ex- amples of these morphisms proving that, under some assumption, a functor between small categories induces a morphism of this kind between the natural weak multiplier bialgebra structures carried by the linear spans of the arrow sets of the categories. We explore the notion of elements of group-like type in a weak multiplier bialgebra, proposing a definition in the line of the one by the aforementioned authors for weak bialgebras. We show a big number of its properties and provide more general versions of many results known in the context of weak bialgebras. In particular, in analogy with the classical bialgebra setting （where the set of group-like elements is a monoid）, we prove that the set of these elements possesses a structure of category.

From the backyard to collective gardens in the “blue-courtyard”: Reversing the process of upgrading historic timber-framed courtyard buildings in Madrid

This paper presents an analytical framework for evaluating the impact of the two main processes identified in Madrid timber-framed courtyard buildings reinforcing the courtyard's crucial role in architectural heritage sustainability:their development caused dwellings to darken(1737–1950),and the existing challenge is to open new patios according to the listed buildings'protection *** findings in archival research and existing building assessments led to completed data collection and *** exploring construction expansion,from the house towards the collective prototype around a gradually reduced patio and dwelling darkening(1737–1786),buildings resulted in open,semiopen,underlighted and closed *** area on-site assessment uncovered the transition from the older low-rise type(1–3)floors to the modern closed model of up to(4–6)*** enlargements,consequently reducing original green areas and courtyards,call for reversing that process or formulating a new *** debates the partial demolition of listed buildings in upgrades and its agreement with the needed“blue courtyard”strategy(PGOUM),resulting from joining new rear individual patios to create a communal building block *** uncovered“in-between”type(1864),which integrates two open-air collective spaces,an inner courtyard and a back garden,appears challenging to explore.

Adding new floors to old timber-framed buildings: An assessment of demolished and preserved courtyard houses in the historic centre of Madrid

The constructive analysis of Madrid’s old timber-framed collective courtyard buildings,whether demolished,preserved intact,or enlarged,has achieved the dating of relevant case *** parameters established in this study set a chronology based on front sector original projects:old(1737e1788),pre-modern(1788e1847)and modern(1847e1892).The onsite inspection and archival research point to ongoing misleading construction in the historic Southern *** modern corralas erected on top of pre-existing buildings confirm the initial *** dimensioning rules for new fac¸ades and the stability required in old ones before adding new storeys,maintaining the original masonry or double-layered system,are *** buildings suggest their possible origin a la malicia and a later transformation into transitional ***,an analysis of the demolished courtyards narrows down the dating and points to new conjectures in some preserved by showing their uneven layout,old features,and structural discordances in each sector.

Anthropomorphism Indexes of the Kinematic Chain for Artificial Hands

Anthropomorphic hands have received increasing research interest in the fields of robotics and *** it is not yet clear how to evaluate their *** in the kinematic chain is essential to achieve both functionality and cosmesis.A few previous works have addressed the definition of anthropomorphism indexes,although they have some limitations in its *** this study,three different anthropomorphism indexes have been defined to compare the kinematic chain of artificial hands with that of the human *** indexes are based on the comparison of:(I)the parameters of the kinematic chain(dimensions,type of joints,orientations and ranges of motion),(2)the reachable workspace,and(3)common grasping *** artificial hands with different degrees of anthropomorphism have been compared using the three Anthropomorphism Indexes of the Kinematic Chain(AIKC).The results show a high correlation between the first and third AIKC for the hands *** second AIKC presents much lower values than the other two,although they are higher for hands that combine abduction/adduction and flexion/extension movements in the kinematic chain of each *** indexes can be useful during the initial stage of designing artificial hands or evaluating their anthropomorphism.

Modeling and simulation of normal and hemiparetic gait

Gait is the collective term for the two types of bipedal locomotion, walking and running. This paper is focused on walking. The analysis of human gait is of interest to many different disciplines, including biomecha- nics, human-movement science, rehabilitation and medicine in general. Here we present a new model that is capable of reproducing the properties of walking, normal and pathological. The aim of this paper is to establish the biomechanical principles that underlie human walking by using Lagrange method. The constraint forces of Rayleigh dissipation function, through which to consider the effect on the tissues in the gait, are included. Depending on the value of the factor present in the Rayleigh dissipation function, both normal and pathological gait can be simulated. First of all, we apply it in the normal gait and then in the permanent hemiparetic gait. Anthropometric data of adult person are used by simulation, and it is possible to use anthropometric data for children but is necessary to consider existing table ofanthropometric data. Validation of these models includes simulations of passive dynamic gait that walk on level ground. The dynamic walking approach provides a new perspective of gait analysis, focusing on the kinematics and kinetics of gait. There have been studies and simulations to show normal human gait, but few of them have focused on abnormal, especially hemiparetie gait. Quantitative comparisons of the model predictions with gait measurements show that the model can reproduce the significant characteristics of normal gait.

Synsepalum dulcificum extracts exhibit cytotoxic activity on human colorectal cancer cells and upregulate c-fos and c-jun early apoptotic gene expression

Objective: To explore cytotoxicity of Synsepalum dulcificum(S. dulcificum) Daniell(Sapotaceae) on human colon cancer(HCT-116 and HT-29), human monocytic leukemia(THP-1) and normal(HDFn) cell lines, and its effect on the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun. Methods: Leaf, stem and berry of S. dulcificum were separately extracted by using 2 solvents, 10% ethanol(EtOH) and 80% methanol(MeOH). PrestoB lue~? cell viability assay and q RT-PCR assay were conducted to examine the above objectives respectively. Results: Stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum were cytotoxic to HCT-116 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells. For HCT-116, IC_(50) values of these 3 extracts were not significantly different(P>0.05) from that of the positive control bleomycin(IC_(50) of 33.57 μg/mL), while for HT-29, IC_(50) values of these 3 extracts were significantly lower(P<0.05) than that of bleomycin(IC_(50) of 25.24 μg/mL). None of the extracts were cytotoxic to the THP-1 monocytic leukemia cells and HDFn normal human dermal fibroblasts. For both HCT-116 and HT-29, these extracts significantly up-regulated(P<0.05) the expression of c-fos and c-jun compared to the untreated negative control. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that cytotoxicity of stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum on HCT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cells is due to the induced apoptosis which is caused by the up-regulation of the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun.

RANS feasibility study of using roughness to mimic transition strip effect on the crossflowseparation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid

An axisymmetric body at incidence experiences the three-dimensional crossflow separation. This separation is attributed to the adverse circumferential pressure gradient. However, the separation pattern is also dependent upon the structure of the boundary layer. In this regard, utilization of transition strip devices in experiments on axisymmetric bodies may modify this structure, and consequently the crossflow separation pattern. The main objective of the present research is to mimic numerically the transition strip effect on the crossflow separation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid up to a = 30° incidence and ReL = 4.2 x 10&. However, to avoid direct modeling of the strip, which would increase the computational cost, an attempt was made to add roughness over the body surface. To estimate the roughness that simulates closely the transition strip effect, three different roughness values were considered. The numerical model is based on RANS and a Reynolds stress turbulence model implemented in STARCCM+. The simulations have been evaluated based on the local and global variables and validated against the available experimental data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of using a proper roughness value to mimic the transition strip effect. They also show the importance of modeling the transition strip effect, which is normally not taken into account, to capture the crossflow separation pattern.

Ambient vibration testing and updating of the finite element model of a simply supported beam bridge

An ambient vibration test on a concrete bridge constructed in 1971 and calibration of its finite element model are *** bridge is characterized by a system of post-tensioned and simply supported *** dynamic characteristics of the bridge,*** frequencies,mode shapes and damping ratios were computed from the ambient vibration tests by using the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm(ERA).Then,these characteristics were used to update the finite element model of the bridge by formulating an optimization problem and then using Genetic Algorithms(GA)to solve *** the results of the ambient vibration test of this type of bridge,it is concluded that two-dimensional mode shapes exist:in the longitudinal and transverse;and these experimentally obtained dynamic characteristics were also achieved in the analytical model through *** application of GAs as optimization techniques showed great versatility to optimize any number and type of variables in the model.
