Influence of different sports on fat mass and lean mass in growing girls

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the effects of different sports(swimming, football, basketball, and handball) on fat mass and lean mass in prepubertal and pubertal girls.Methods: Two hundred girls(10.6 ± 1.5 years old, Tanner stages I–III) participated in the study and were divided into 5 groups: 40 swimmers, 40 football players, 40 basketball players, 40 handball players, and 40 controls. Fat and lean masses at whole body, arms, trunk, and legs were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA). Pubertal status was determined using Tanner test. Effects of different sports on fat and lean masses were assessed through analysis of covariance with height as covariates. Analyses were performed separately in 2 groups depending on the Tanner stage(prepubertal and pubertal).Results: The girls of the control group had less lean mass and more fat mass compared to the girls who play sports(p < 0.05). There were differences in body fat between sports. The swimmers and football players had less body fat(p < 0.05). On the other hand, handball players showed the highest values in lean mass(p < 0.05).Conclusion: Impact sports(football, basketball, and handball) and low-impact sports(swimming) provide an appropriate development of lean mass in growing girls. We can conclude that people practicing sports at early ages ensure a lower fat mass and higher lean mass compared to those who do not practice. These results may be useful as a preventive method of adult obesity.

This review aims to offer a vision of the clinical reality of cell therapy today in intensive medicine.For this,it has been carried out a description of the properties,functions,and Mesenchymal Stem Cells(MSCS)sources to subsequently address the evidence in preclinical models and studies clinical trials with whole cells and models attributed to small extracellular vesicles(sEVs),nanoparticles made up of microvesicles secreted by cells with an effect on the extracellular matrix,and their impact as an alternative towards cell-free regenerative medicine.MSCs are cells that enhance the regenerative capacity which can be differentiated typically in different lineages committed as bone,cartilage,and adipose tissue.On the other hand,small extracellular vesicles are structures that participate notoriously and crucially in intercellular communication,which has led to a change in the concept of the functions and the role that these vesicles play in living organisms,in the restoration of damaged tissues and the inflammatory response and immunological.We present the mechanisms that are involved in the applications of MSCS as whole cells and their sEVs in cell therapy and cell-free therapy as an alternative in regenerative medicine.Considering the structural loss that occurs after surgical procedures for cystic and tumoral pathology in periodontitis,as well as the maxillary atrophy that determines the rehabilitation with dental implants,it is imperative to find satisfactory solutions.The opportunity provided by the findings in stem cells is a recent introduction in the field of oral surgery,based on the regenerative potential that these cells possess to restore defects at different levels of the oral cavity.This review aims to discover the real applications that stem cells may have in our treatments shortly.

The immune system protects organisms against endogenous and exogenous harm and plays a key role in tissue development,repair and regeneration.Traditional immunomodulatory biologics exhibit limitations including degradation by enzymes,short half-life and lack of targeting ability.Encapsulating or binding these biologics within biomaterials is an effective way to address these problems.Hydrogels are promising immunomodulatory materials because of their prominent biocompatibility,tuneability and versatility.However,to take advantage of these opportunities and optimize material performance,it is important to more specifically elucidate,and leverage on,how hydrogels affect and control the immune response.Here,we summarize how key physical and chemical properties of hydrogels affect the immune response.We first provide an overview of underlying steps of the host immune response upon exposure to biomaterials.Then,we discuss recent advances in immunomodulatory strategies where hydrogels play a key role through(i)physical properties including dimensionality,stiffness,porosity and topography;(ii)chemical properties including wettability,electric property and molecular presentation;and(iii)the delivery of bioactive molecules via chemical or physical cues.Thus,this review aims to build a conceptual and practical toolkit for the design of immune-instructive hydrogels capable of modulating the host immune response.

Clinical impact of artificial intelligence-based solutions on imaging of the pancreas and liver

Artificial intelligence(AI)has experienced substantial progress over the last ten years in many fields of application,including healthcare.In hepatology and pancreatology,major attention to date has been paid to its application to the assisted or even automated interpretation of radiological images,where AI can generate accurate and reproducible imaging diagnosis,reducing the physicians’workload.AI can provide automatic or semi-automatic segmentation and registration of the liver and pancreatic glands and lesions.Furthermore,using radiomics,AI can introduce new quantitative information which is not visible to the human eye to radiological reports.AI has been applied in the detection and characterization of focal lesions and diffuse diseases of the liver and pancreas,such as neoplasms,chronic hepatic disease,or acute or chronic pancreatitis,among others.These solutions have been applied to different imaging techniques commonly used to diagnose liver and pancreatic diseases,such as ultrasound,endoscopic ultrasonography,computerized tomography(CT),magnetic resonance imaging,and positron emission tomography/CT.However,AI is also applied in this context to many other relevant steps involved in a comprehensive clinical scenario to manage a gastroenterological patient.AI can also be applied to choose the most convenient test prescription,to improve image quality or accelerate its acquisition,and to predict patient prognosis and treatment response.In this review,we summarize the current evidence on the application of AI to hepatic and pancreatic radiology,not only in regard to the interpretation of images,but also to all the steps involved in the radiological workflow in a broader sense.Lastly,we discuss the challenges and future directions of the clinical application of AI methods.

The process of selecting an artificial intelligence(AI)model to assist clinical diagnosis of a particular pathology and its validation tests is relevant since the values of accuracy,sensitivity and specificity may not reflect the behavior of the method in a real environment.Here,we provide helpful considerations to increase the success of using an AI model in clinical practice.

Loss of largest and oldest individuals of the Montpellier snake correlates with recent warming in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula

The effects of climate change on organisms are now being extensively studied in many different taxa. However, the variation in body size, usually shrinkage in response to increasing temperature, has received little attention regarding to reptiles. During past periods of global warming, many organisms shrank in size, and current evidence and experiments manipulating temperature have shown a biomass decrease in some organisms with increasing temperatures. Here we test whether the body size of the Montpellier snake from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula is changing and correlated with the increasing temperature in this region during a 39-year period (1976-2014). We measured the snout-vent length (SVL) of vouchers in scientific collections to check for trends in adult body size at the population level in relation with temperature, while controlling for the age of the individuals (estimated by skeletochronology, =141). Given the great ontogenetic variation in body size of the study species, we categorized age in 3 classes: "young adults" (under 5 years old), "intermediate adults" (from 5 to 7 years old), and "old adults" (from 8 to 14 years old). By means of linear mixed models, we found a negative relationship between SVL of "old adults" and average annual temperature in the region during the lifetime of each individual. Our results indicate that largest and oldest individuals of the Montpellier Snake, that is, males because of strong sexual size dimorphism in this species, disappeared from the study population, and suggest that it occurred in response to rising environmental temperature.

Knowing the causes of biological invasion success can be relevant to combat future invasive processes.The recent invasion of the horseshoe whip snake Hemorrhois hippocrepis on the island of Ibiza provides the opportunity to compare natural history traits between invasive and source populations,and to unravel what makes this snake a successful invader that is threatening the only endemic vertebrate of the island,Podarcis pityusensis.This study compares the basic reproductive traits of mainland native and invasive populations of the snake.Our results revealed that invasive populations were characterized by female maturity at a smaller size,extended reproductive period,and much lower reproduction frequency compared to the native population.In contrast,some major reproductive traits--the abdominal fat body cycle,clutch size,hatchling body size,and hatchling body condition,did not differ between the two populations.Some of these results must reflect the environmental differences in the recently invaded island with respect to the source area,and overall plasticity of reproductive traits.Plasticity is evolutionarily interesting,and may aid the succesful growth of this species in their invasiveness of Mediterranean islands like Ibiza.The most significant finding is that this expression of phenotypic plasticity occurred rapidly in this invasive population,within a period of 14 years maximum.Our results on the reproduction ecology of the invasive population were not conclusive regarding the factors determining the invasiveness of the snake and pointed to alternative causes.

HSV gene transfer in the treatment of chronic pain

It has proven difficult to use systemic administration of small molecules to selectively modulate nociception.Over the past decade,we and others have developed non-replicating herpes simplex virus(HSV)-based vectors to treat chronic pain.Subcutaneous inoculation of an HSV vector effectively transduces sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglion;release of transgene-coded inhibitory neurotransmitters or anti-inflammatory peptides reduces pain-related behaviors in rodent models of chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain.A phase 1 trial of this therapy in patients is set to begin soon.

Deciphering the superior thermoelectric property of posttreatment-free PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrid by X-ray and neutron scattering characterization

In this work,a polymer and ionic liquid(IL)hybrid with superior thermoelectric performance is prepared via a system design of the chemical composition,molar ratio of the constituent molecules and manipulating the structure in solution and dried films.The solution-casted hybrid film,consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide(EMIM:TCM),shows the highest power factor of 175μW m^(−1) K^(−2) in the polymer hybrid prepared by a post-treatment-free method.With a set of complementary structure characterization methods,it is found that EMIM:TCM can induce the structure reorganization of PEDOT:PSS in solution from a core-shell model to a rod-like model,during which PEDOT partially separates from PSS that eases the conductive network formation.In addition,the oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS is reduced by adding EMIM:TCM.Based on which,the PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrid shows the best performance in optimizing the conductivity(1163 S cm^(−1))and Seebeck coefficient(38.8μV K^(−1))simultaneously.
