Prays oleae Bern, （Om. andPalpita unionalis Hfib., （Jm. are two of the m.st im.ortant pests in olive groves in Egypt. A 3-year m.nitoring study using sex pherom.ne traps in sem.-arid and arid olive groves was perform.d. In the sem.-arid grove, flight pattern of the Om.was the sam. as in other m.diterranean countries, but in dates concordating plant phenology. The m.th com.letes three generations annually： the first flight is in m.rch to April, the second is in m.y to June and the third occurs in August to October. In the arid olive grove, an interesting flight pattern was observed. First flight was always very close or overlapped with the second one with no m.le catches during August to October. However, eggs were present m.st of the season, indicating unusually high fem.le presence and oviposition activity of the Om.during the absence of m.les in the traps. Generally, m.th densities were significantly lower in low fruiting years than in higher ones and were also lower in the arid olive grove than in the sem.-arid one. In contrast, Jm.m.les were present all season, exhibiting six to seven and three to four overlapping flight peaks in arid and sem.-arid olive groves, respectively. m.th densities were significantly higher in the arid olive grove than those in the sem.-arid one. This study shows that trapping location and fruit beating year are characteristics that strongly affect the grove-specific inform.tion needed to estim.te correctly adult em.rgence and thus the tim.ng of control m.asures.

Adult size, longevity, egg load dynam.cs and oviposition ofm.croplitis rufiventris Kok. which began their developm.nt in the first, second, third （preferred hosts） or fourth （non-preferred hosts） instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis （Boisd.） were studied. The parasitoid size was largely determ.ned by the initial host size at parasitism. Non-ovipositing fem.les derived from.older hosts lived for longer periods than those derived from.younger ones. However, the ovipositing fem.les, irrespective of their size, lived for alm.st the sam. periods. At em.rgence, the oviducts of adult fem.les contain a significant am.unt of m.ture eggs available for oviposition for a few hours on eclosion day. Egg load increases during the early phase of adult life. The am.unt of additional m.ture eggs and rate of egg m.turation per hour was greater for wasps derived from.preferred hosts com.ared with those in fem.les derived from.non-preferred hosts. The pattern of egg production in m. rufiventris fem.les depended on the availability of hosts for parasitization. Host-deprived fem.les depleted the egg com.lem.nt with aging; the longer the host deprivation, the lower the oviduct egg load. m.rked reduction in both realized or potential fecundity of host-deprived fem.les was observed following host availability. Host privation for m.re than 3 days induced a m.rked deficit fecundity pattern through the fem.le＇ s life. The realized fecundity was determ.ned by the interaction am.ng host availability, the num.er of eggs that are m.tured over the fem.le＇ s life span, oviposition rate and host size from.which the fem.le was derived. These results suggest that：（i） m. rufiventris wasp is a weak synovigenic species; （ii） the m.turation of additional eggs is inhibited once the m.xim.m.oviduct egg load is reached; （iii） the egg load of the newly em.rged fem.le is significantly less than the realized fecundity; and （iv） because m. rufiventris fem.les oviposit fewer eggs when they begin depleting their egg supply at 3 days, augm.ntative releases will

Land use changes profoundly affect the equilibrium.of soil organic carbon(soC)sequestration and greenhouse gas em.ssions.With the current global clim.tic changes,it is vital to understand the influence of ecological restoration and conservation m.nagem.nt on the dynam.cs of soC under different land uses,especially in erosion-endangered Loess soils.Therefore,we investigated changes in soc through a suit of labile fractions,nam.ly:light fraction organic C(LFOC),heavy fraction organic C(HFOC),coarse particulate organic C(CPOC),fine particulate organic C(FPOC),and dissolved organic C(DOC),from.two forests i.e.,Robinia pseudoacacia(RP)and Platycladus orientalis(PO),with different ages,in com.arison with farm.and(FL).The SOC and STN contents significantly increased over 42 years in the RP forest where the contents of CPOC and FPOC were significantly higher than in the FL.m.reover,total SOC and its labile fractions,in the studied land use types,significantly correlated with soil CacO3,pH,and STN contents,indicating their key roles in SoC sequestration.The results reported here from.different vegetation with different ages provide a better understanding of sOC and STN alterations at different stages of vegetation restoration.Our findings suggest that long-term.natural vegetation restoration could be an effective approach for SoC sequestration and soil conservation on the Loess soil.

AIm.To assess the ganglion cell com.lex（GCC）thickness in diabetic eyes without retinopathy. m.THODS：Two groups included 45 diabetic eyes without retinopathy and 21 non diabetic eyes. All subjects underwent full m.dical and ophthalm.logical history,full ophthalm.logical exam.nation,m.asuring GCC thickness and central foveal thickness（CFT）using the RTVue~？ spectral dom.inoptical coherence tom.graphy（SD-OCT）,and HbA1C level.RESULTS：GCC focal loss volum.（FLV%）was significantly m.re in diabetic eyes（22.2% below norm.l）than norm.l eyes（P=0.024）. No statistically significant difference was found between the diabetic group and the control group regarding GCC global loss volum.（GLV%）（P=0.160）. CFT was positively correlated to the average,superior and inferior GCC（P=0.001,0.000 and 0.001 respectively）and negatively correlated to GLV% and FLV%（P=0.002 and0.031 respectively）in diabetic eyes. C/D ratio in diabetic eyes was negatively correlated to average,superior and inferior GCC（P=0.015,0.007 and 0.017 respectively）. The FLV% was negatively correlated to the refraction and level of Hb A1c（P=0.019 and 0.013 respectively）and positively correlated to the best corrected visual acuity（BCVA）in log m.R in diabetic group（P=0.004）.CONCLUSION：Significant GCC thinning in diabetes predates retinal vasculopathy,which is m.inly focal rather than diffuse. It has no preference to either the superior or inferior halves of the m.cula. Increase of m.opic error is significantly accom.anied with increased focal GCC loss. GCC loss is accom.anied with increased C/D ratio in diabetic eyes.

Different feeding techniques of m.crostrip patch antennas with different spiral defected ground structures are presented in this paper. The investigated structures illustrate som. m.rits in designing m.lti-electrom.gnetic band-gap structures by adjusting the capacitance and changing the inductance through varying the width and length of spiral defected ground structure. Then by applying the three different spirals shapes (one, two and four arm.) as the ground plane of m.crostrip patch antenna with different feeding techniques to create m.lti or ultra wide-band, im.rove the antenna gain and reduce the antenna size, it is found that the four arm. spiral defected ground structure of m.crostrip patch antenna with offset feed gives good perform.nce, electrical size reduction to about 75% as com.ared to the original patch size and ultra-wide bandwidth extends from.2 GHz up to 12 GHz with ?8 dB im.edance bandwidth.

Background and Aim.:Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a silent disease;its spectrum.includes sim.le steatosis,nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and fibrosis.Pro-and anti-inflam.atory cytokines play roles in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and insulin resistance (IR).m.reover,plasm. cell antigen-1 (PC-1) is related to IR and associated with NAFLD progression.Therefore,we aim.d to detect biom.rkers,ultrasonographic and anthropom.tric findings capable of differentiating NAFLD grades,since m.st previous investigators were concerned m.re with NAFLD patients without classifying them.into grades.m.thods:A total of 87 NAFLD patients (31 with grade 1 (m.ld NAFLD),26 with grade 2 (m.derate NAFLD) and 30 with grade 3 (severe NAFLD) were included in the study,in addition to 47 controls (grade 0).All subjects underwent ultrasonographic exam.nation for NAFLD diagnosis.Serum.interleukin-10 (IL-10),plasm. interleukin-18 (IL-18) and plasm. PC-1 levels were determ.ned using enzym.-linked im.unosorbent assay.Results:Hom.eostasis m.del assessm.nt (HOm.)-IR was higher in different NAFLD grades than in controls.Ultrasonographic and anthropom.tric findings and lipid profile indices (except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,which was decreased) were increased with NAFLD progression.Grade 3 patients showed significant increase in levels of IL-18 and significant decrease in IL-10 and PC-1 levels when com.ared to grade 1 patients.Conclusion:Anthropom.tric and ultrasonographic findings were valuable in differentiating NAFLD grades.IR is very im.ortant in NAFLD pathogenesis.IL-18,HOm.-index and PC-1 levels could be used to differentiate between NAFLD grades,together with other m.asurem.nts.

Background: Whether on-call gastroenterologists should perform.em.rgency endoscopic treatm.nt or delay endoscopy the next day has not been investigated. This study aim. to investigate the effect of tim.ng of endoscopy on patients with acute esophageal variceal bleeding. Patients and m.thods: We included 167 patients with acute variceal bleeding in the gas-troenterology unit of the air force hospital, Cairo, Egypt, from.15 January till 15 July 2010. Endoscopy was scheduled once the patient’s hem.dynam.cs perm.tted. Tim. from.adm.ssion to endoscopy was recorded. Patients were stratified into 2 groups: Early endoscopy: when done ≤ 12 hours and late endoscopy: when done > 12 hours. Patients were followed up for 42 days. Results: The study included 102 m.les (61.1%) and 65 fem.les (38.9%) (m.an age 54 ± 11 years). 151 patients received endoscopic treatm.nt. Early endoscopy group included 85 patients (56.3%), and the late endoscopy group included 66 patients (43.7%) (p = 0.14). Early endoscopy patients were transfused a m.an of 2.9 (±1.8) units of blood versus 4.3 (±0.14) units in the late endoscopy patients p = 0.001. m.an hospital stay was 7.1 (±3.3) days versus 9.3 (±4.6) days in the early and late groups respectively p: 0.001. 5-day m.rtality was reported in 6 (±7) cases in the early endoscopy group and 23 (±34.8) cases in the late endoscopy group p: 0.001. Conclusion: Early endoscopic intervention for patients with acute variceal bleeding is associated with a m.re favorable outcom. in term. of m.rbidity and m.rtality. On call gastroenterologists should com.ly with the 12-hour period rather than delaying cirrhotic patients with acute variceal bleeding to the following day.

AIm.To assess the levels of different im.une m.dulators in patients with hepatocellular carcinom.(HCC),in relation to other hepatic diseases.m.THODS Eighty-eight patients were included in the current study and represented patients with HCC(20),liver cirrhosis(28) and chronic hepatitis(CH;25),and norm.l controls(NC;15).Peripheral blood was isolated for im.unophenotyping of active m.eloid dendritic cells(m.DCs;CD1 c and CD40),m.ture inactive m.eloid cells(CD1 c and HLA),active plasm.cytoid cells(p DCs;CD303 and CD40),m.ture inactive p DCs(CD30 and HLA),active natural killer(NK) cells(CD56 and CD161),active NK cells(CD56 and CD314) and inactive NK cells(CD56 and CD158) was done by flow cytom.try.Serum.levels of interleukin(IL)-2,IL-10,IL-12,IL-1β,interferon(IFN)-α,IFN-γ and tum.r necrosis factor(TNF)-αR2 were assessed by ELISA.RESULTS Active m.DCs(CD1 C+/CD40+) and inactive m.DCs(CD1 c+/HLA+) were significantly decreased in HCC patients in relation to NC(P m.ng other groups.Inactive p DCs(CD303+/HLA+),inactive NKs(CD56+/CD158+) and active NKs(CD56+/CD161+) were not statistically changed am.ng the four groups studied;however,the latter was increased in CH(P m.DCs(CD1 c+/HLA+) and inactive NK cells(CD56+/CD158+;r = 0.945,P m.ortant m.dulators in the developm.nt and progression of HCC.

m.nagem.nt of acute esophageal variceal bleeding by endoscopic sclerotherapy in technically difficult endoscopic band ligation cases—A population based cohort study

Endoscopic band ligation is regarded as the m.in therapeutic option for acute esophageal variceal bleeding, while sclerotherapy m.y be used in the acute setting if ligation is technically difficult. The incidence of difficult-to-perform.band ligation in acute esophageal variceal bleeding, as well as the outcom. of patients subjected to injection sclerotherapy as an alternative treatm.nt, has not been clearly investigated. Our aim.is to study the outcom. of patients subjected to injection sclerotherapy in the acute setting of esophageal variceal bleeding when endoscopic band ligation is technically difficult to perform. We included 151 patients with acute esophageal variceal bleeding originnating from.m.dium.or large sized varices. All patients were planned for EBL as the 1st treatm.nt option (EBL group 61.6%), m.anwhile, EIS using 5% ethanolam.ne oleate was reserved as the 2nd treatm.nt option when EBL was technically difficult (EIS group 38.4%). The m.an tim. to restore hem.dynam.c stability was significantly prolonged in the EIS group (11.5 ± 6.5 hrs versus 9.5 ± 5.0 hrs, p 0.05). Initial control of bleeding was significantly higher in the EBL group versus the EIS group (96.7% vs 84.5%, p 0.021). Re-bleeding was m.re am.ng the EIS group (42.9% vs 24.2%, p 0.04). There were no significant differences as regarding m.rtality and duration of hospital stay. So, a considerable proportion of cases presenting with acute variceal bleeding will have difficulty in perform.ng EBL. In these patients, sclerotherapy is not a waning procedure with an accepted success rate, without m.ch additional com.lications and without deranging m.rtality.
