Effect of capsular tension ring implantation on predicted refractive error after cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome

AIM: To investigate the effect of capsular tension ring(CTR) implantation on predicted refractive error after cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation(PEX) ***: This double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients with PEX syndrome referring to Imam Khomeini Hospital affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran, for undergoing cataract surgery. The study population was divided into two groups, namely CTR group(n=30) and non-CTR group(control group;n=30). The refractive error and anterior chamber depth(ACD) were measured 1 wk, 1 mo, and 3 mo after phacoemulsification(PE) ***: The results indicated no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of predicted refractive error(obtained by subtracting preoperative predicted refractive error from actual postoperative refractive error) 1 wk(P=0.47), 1 mo(P=0.30), and 3 mo(P=0.06) after the PE surgery. Regarding the CTR group, the changes of ACD was statistically significant 1 and 3 mo after the PE surgery, compared to those obtained 1 wk post-surgery(P=0.005).CONCLUSION: The CTR implantation in PEX cataractous patients without zonulysis has no statistically significant effect on the predicted refraction and ACD changes after PE. The predicted refraction error has a hyperopic shift in both groups. The results reveal the unnecessary of calculating modified IOL in CTR implantation.

Polymeric vs hydroxyapatite-based scaffolds on dental pulp stem cell proliferation and differentiation

AIM: To evaluate adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells(h DPSCs) on four commercially available scaffold biomaterials. METHODS: hD PSCs were isolated from human dental pulp tissues of extracted wisdom teeth and established in stem cell growth medium. h DPSCs at passage 3-5 were seeded on four commercially available scaffold biomaterials, SureO ss(Allograft), Cerabone(Xenograft), PLLA(Synthetic), and OSTEON Ⅱ Collagen(Composite), for 7 and 14 d in osteogenic medium. Cell adhesion and morphology to the scaffolds were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Cell proliferation and differentiation into osteogenic lineage were evaluated using DNA counting and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity assay, respectively. RESULTS: All scaffold biomaterials except Sure Oss(Allograft) supported h DPSC adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. hD PSCs seeded on PLLA(Synthetic) scaffold showed the highest cell proliferation and attachment as indicated with both SEM and DNA counting assay. Evaluating the osteogenic differentiation capability of hD PSCs on different scaffold biomaterials with ALP activity assay showed high level of ALP activity on cells cultured on PLLA(Synthetic) and OSTEON ⅡCollagen(Composite) scaffolds. SEM micrographs also showed that in the presence of Cerabone(Xenograft) and OSTEON Ⅱ Collagen(Composite) scaffolds, the h DPSCs demonstrated the fibroblastic phenotype with several cytoplasmic extension, while the cells on PLLA scaffold showed the osteoblastic-like morphology, round-like shape. CONCLUSION: PLLA scaffold supports adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hD PSCs. Hence, it may be useful in combination with hD PSCs for cell-based reconstructive therapy.

Youth Role in the Arab Spring

Middle East and North Africa （MENA） has been experiencing a unique demographic transition in the world especially after September 11, whilst, its social, political and economic structures have considerably remained inflexible and can hardly meet the increasing demands of employment among the youth whose expectations are raised through expansion in education. In spite of various common causes for the Arab uprisings, the paper spotlights the ＂Youth role＂ and its regarded issues of ＂Youth Bulge＂, ＂Education＂ and ＂Unemployment＂ with a glimpse to the overturned regimes of ＂Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen＂. According to published statistics these countries are among the countries with the highest rate of youth as working age population in MENA. Therefore, the paper is to present the importance and impact of youth as a social parameter in challenging political structure of the countries in the MENA and leading to topple their political systems. Thus, the paper reasons the MENA political upheavals, in general, and the mentioned countries＇ uprisings, in particular, can not be well understood disregarding to natural tensions between economic, population structures, and political demographic challenges. This is to be done drawing on data from different international institutions. The intervened variables such as ＂ethnicity, race, religion and sexuality＂ and international parameters have not been considered.

Microstructure,mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of Al-Si-Cu-Zn-X(X=Bi,Sb,Sr) die cast alloy

The microstructure evolution, mechanical and corrosion properties of Al-11Si-2Cu-0.8Zn die cast alloy treated with Bi, Sb and Sr additions were investigated. The results of mechanical testing showed that all additions increased impact toughness, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the alloy as a result of change in eutectic Si morphology. The analysis of fracture surfaces revealed that with addition of Sr and to lesser extent Bi and Sb, the alloy exhibited a predominantly ductile fracture rather than quasi-cleavage brittle fracture. Moreover, with the additions of Sr, Bi and Sb, the quality index increased to 164.7 MPa, 156.3 MPa and 152.6 MPa respectively from 102 MPa for the base alloy. Polarization corrosion tests conducted in sodium chloride solution showed that the corrosion potential shifted to more negative values with additions of Sb, Bi and Sr, respectively. Corrosion immersion tests also revealed that the element additions have a detrimental effect on the corrosion rate of alloys, due to the increase of boundaries between the Al and eutectic Si phases.

Single Beam Z-Scan Measurement of Nonlinear Refractive Index of Crude Oils

Nonlinear properties of two different crude oils from west-south Iran reservoirs have been investigated using the single beam Z-scan technique. The nonlinear refractive indices of the samples were measured by use of diode laser in the CW regime and at the wavelength 660 nm. The experiment results showed that the samples have large and negative refractive index nonlinear refraction coefficient. These results showed that the crude oil has significant nonlinear properties and it could be a candidate for photonic and nonlinear optical devices and also this information can be used in petroleum science and oceanology and etc.

＜正＞This paper proposes two algorithms for the simultaneous identification of time-delay and rational transfer function of continuous time systems. The algorithms, which include the projection algorithm with momentum term and the least-squares algorithm with momentum term obtained from different cost functions, are simple and derivative-free for practical realization. The identification scheme can be applied to the systems with variable time delay. The simulation results demonstrate the proposed methods can successfully estimate the unknown time delay and rational dynamics of the systems even in the presence of disturbance noise.

Stable state of serum inflammatory cytokines during induction of benign prostate hyperplasia in dogs

Objective:To monitor serum inflammatory cytokines during induction of benign prostate hyperplasia in ***:This research was designed as a case-control *** were 20 adult mixed-breed intact male dogs,which were divided into the normal group(n=10)and the benign prostate hyperplasia group(n=10).In the benign prostate hyperplasia group,benign prostate hyperplasia was induced by injection of testosterone(75.00 mg/dog,i.m.)and estrogen(0.75 mg/dog,i.m.)on day 0(day of the first injection),day 21,day 42,and day *** doses of testosterone were doubled on days 21,42,and *** normal group did not receive any *** sampling was performed from the jugular vein at days 0,21,42,and *** concentrations of interleukin-8,interleukin-10,and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***:The levels of interleukin-8,interleukin-10 and TNF-αwere not significantly different between the normal group and the benign prostate hyperplasia ***,concentrations of the pro-inflammatory cutokines were not significantly different between the normal group and the BPH group in each day of ***:In spite of the induction of benign prostate hyperplasia,changes in the concentration of blood serum inflammatory cytokines were not significantly different with that of the normal group and between the days of induction of benign prostate hyperplasia during two *** reveals that there is a stable state of serum inflammatory cytokines during induction of benign prostate hyperplasia in dogs.

The Relative Deprivation Theory and Yemen＇s Uprising

The political upheavals in the Arab world during 2011 challenged the political status quo and have irrevocably paved the way toward transformation in the Middle East and North Africa （MENA）, The longstanding structural impediments to equitable growth and social justice afflicting the Arab world came to a head through a combination of persistently poverty, high unemployment, particularly among educated youth, rampant corruption, deficit of democratic governance, and essential freedoms. Yemen is the third country of the Middle Eastern countries which turmoil sparked in. All the uprisings connote of social, political and economic discontent and frustration. The main question and issue of this paper is to answer： What conditions breed change to Yemen？ The paper spotlights ＂relative deprivation＂ of Ted Robert Gurr as the most relevant theory to illustrate roots of the Yemen uprising. Relative deprivation theory holds that instead of an absolute standard deprivation, a gap between expectations and reality leads men to political violence. Therefore, this study is to utilize relative deprivation theory to explain how socio-economic shortages （such as high unemployment and education, along with poverty） and political inefficiencies of the Yemen＇s authoritarian regime led to public and collective discontent and upheaval. The intervened variables such as ＂ethnicity, race, religion, and sexuality＂ and international parameters have not been considered,
