Vasoactive intestinal peptide,a promising agent for myopia?

AIM： To investigate the role of vasoactive intestinal peptide（VIP） in form-deprivation myopia（FDM）.METHODS： FDM was created in three groups of eight chicks by placing a translucent diffuser on their right *** injections of saline and VIP were applied once a day into the occluded eyes of groups 2 and 3,*** and axial length（AL） measurements were performed on the first and 8^th days of diffuser *** retina mR NA levels of the VIP receptors and the ZENK protein in right eyes of the three groups and left eyes of the first group on day 8 were determined using real time polymerase chain reaction（PCR）.RESULTS： The median final refraction（D） in right eyes were-13.75（-16.00,-12.00）,-11.50（-12.50,-7.50）,and-1.50（-4.75,-0.75） in groups 1,2,and 3,respectively（P〈0.001）.The median AL（mm） in right eyes were 10.65（10.00,11.10）,9.90（9.70,10.00）,and 9.20（9.15,9.25） in groups 1,2,and 3,respectively（P〈0.001）.The median delta-delta cycle threshold（CT） values for the VIP2 receptors were 1.07（0.82,1.43）,1.22（0.98,1.65）,0.29（0.22,0.45） in right eyes of groups 1,2,and 3,and 1.18（0.90,1.37） in left eyes of group 1,respectively（P=0.001）.The median delta-delta CT values for the ZENK protein were 1.07（0.63,5.03）,3.55（2.20,5.55）,undetectable in right eyes of groups 1,2,and 3 and 1.89（0.21,4.73） in left eyes of group 1,respectively（P=0.001）.CONCLUSION： VIP has potential inhibitory effects in the development of FDM.

52-year-old man presented with a history of angina .pectoris over 3 months. He had a history ofhypertension and hyperlipidemia. His physical examination, blood chemistry, ECG, chest X-ray were normal. A treadmill exercise ECG test was performed using the Bruce protocol. Owing to 1 mm ST segment depressions at derivations DⅡ, DⅢ, aVE V4-V6, and typical chest pain at third stage the test was evaluated as ischemia-positive test. Therefore, he was scheduled fox diagnostic coronary angiography.

＜正＞Fault-tolerant motor drives are required in various safety critical applications. Using special motor design and inverter topology, brushless permanent magnet AC motor drives can have a fault-tolerant capability. In this paper, a dual motor drive configuration has been proposed which offer high robustness and reliability. This paper studies various critical performance characteristics of the dual motor drive including drive loss and system efficiency. The paper aims to address some of important performance issues in the motor drive, which has not been addressed previously. The paper presents the details of the experimental setup and explains the measurement methods for the motor parameters and for the open-circuit torque loss. The efficiency prediction method and corresponding results are also presented and verified by the computer simulation study both under healthy and various faulty conditions.

The inflammatory response of the pulp after direct capping with platelet-rich plasma and enamel matrix derivative:A controlled animal study

Aims: To evaluate the inflammatory response of the exposed pulp of incisor teeth in rats after direct pulp capping, using platelet rich plasma (PRP), enamel matrix derivate (EMD), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Methods: The study was conducted on 36 Wistar albino rats with a total of 144 incisor teeth. The pulps of 96 teeth of the rats were perforated and capped with different agents. Serving as the positive control group, the pulps of 24 teeth were only perforated and capped without capping agents, whereas the pulps of 24 teeth were used as the negative control group without being perforated (without any process). The research was ended with the extracting of the teeth on the 7th day-28th day. The teeth were taken to the routine and histological follows;cross sections were prepared and painted with hematoxylen & eosin. All of the sections were evaluated in terms of inflammatory reaction by histologic analysis taken by light microscope. Statistical analysis was used. The normal distribution of all data was tested with the Mann Whitney U and the differences between the groups were analyze dusing Kruskal Wallis test at 0.05 level. Results: There are no statistically significant differences in terms of inflammation type and necrosis among the treatment groups on 7 days’ post capping. However, improved inflammatory cell accumulation, hyperemia and lowest necrosis were observed from the samples treated with PRP (p < 0.05). Conversely, the EMD group indicated that the criteria of inflammation scores and hyper- emia were higher in the 28th day (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Most of cells accumulating in the PRP group and most necrosis were seen in the EMD group. These new PRP materials might serve as pulp capping biomaterials to induce initial healing response in the future.

A case of sarcoidosis associated with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia

A 78-year-old woman was referred to our university hospital due to dry cough, fever, and weight loss. Laboratory revealed blood eosinophilia, high ESR, CRP and LDH. Rheumatologic markers were negative. Chest X-ray showed ground glass opacities in upper lobes. Uveitis developed in the left eye 1 week after admission. Thorax CT revealed ground glass opacities, reticular appearence in the upper lobes, enlarged axillary and mediastinal lymph nodes. Bronchoalveolar lavage CD4/CD8 was 2.1 and had 48% eosinophils. Histopathologic examination revealed eosinophilic infiltration and non-caseating epitheloid granulomas in the lung and mediastinal lymph nodes without vasculitis. Symptoms, blood eosinophilia and initial thorax CT findings improved after two months of methylprednisolone treatment. Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia is a rare disease characterized by systemic and pulmonary manifestations. It may be associated with other diseases.

The Detection of STAT1 Gene Influencing Milk Related Traits in Turkish Holstein and Jersey Cows

The main purpose of this study was to detect an association of cytoplasmic signal transducers and activators of transcription-1 （STAT1） with milk production traits in 472 Holstein and 283 Jersey cattle breeds of Turkey. This gene, located on chromosome 2, was chosen due to its role on development of mammary gland. A polymorphism of selected 314 bp allele fragment was detected by the restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragments （PCR-RFLP） method and also confirmed by DNA sequencing. The association tests were conducted between STAT1 genotypes and some economically important dairy traits. The genotypes for C/T as a single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） were identified at interval 60 cM to 63 cM. The effects of STAT1 gene on milk production traits were not significant in Holstein cows, although animals with CT genotypes showed fairly close to significant value for the corrected 305 d milk yield. However, Jersey cows with/7＂ genotype were 2.07 kg higher for test-day milk yield （P 〈 0.05）, 0.13 kg for fat yield （P 〈 0.01） and 0.07 kg for protein yield （P 〈 0.05） compared with animals having CC and CT genotypes. Definitely, the further research should be conducted to search this gene intensively with larger samples to identify polymorphism and any association between the economically important traits and genotypic class in Holstein cows. Finally, based on the findings, it was concluded that STATI gene might be used as a potential candidate gene to improve milk yield and milk fat and protein contents in dairy cows breeding programs.

Analysis of Mad Honey (Grayanotoksin) Cases Admitted to Duzce University School of Medicine Emergency Department

Background: Mad honey is the type of honey made by bees that are nourished from the plants of Rhododendron (Rh.) family, and it contains grayanotoksin (GTX). The most significant types of Rh family, which contain GTX, are Rh. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cases which came to the emergency room because of GTX intoxication in detail in order to help diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and prognosis in daily emergency medicine practice. A total of 36 patients with the symptoms and diagnosis of intoxication after consuming mad honey, were included in the study. Ten healthy individuals who did not have a history of taking mad honey were included in the control group. The study is designed as a prospective case control study. The average GTX level of the group who ate mad honey (studygroup) was 7.88 ng/ml (min: 0.00/max: 30.47). At control group, GTX level was 0 ng/ml. There was no statistically significant relationship between the symptoms (dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, deterioration, angina) and blood GTX level in the study group. Also statistic value reflects relationship between kidney function tests, troponin and control troponin levels in case group. The patients who have absolute decrease in blood pressure and pulse should be questioned by emergency medicine doctors about consuming mad honey. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the relationship between symptoms and GTX poisoning.

Thiol/disulphide homeostasis in celiac disease

AIM To determine dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis in celiac disease and to examine the associate with celiac autoantibodies and gluten-free *** Seventy three patients with celiac disease and 73 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. In both groups, thiol/disulphide homeostasis was examined with a new colorimetric method recently developed by Erel and Neselioglu. RESULTS In patients with celiac disease, native thiol(P = 0.027) and total thiol(P = 0.031) levels were lower, while disulphide(P < 0.001) level, disulphide/native thiol(P < 0.001) and disulphide/total thiol(P < 0.001) ratios were higher compared to the control group. In patients who do not comply with a gluten-free diet, disulphide/native thiol ratio was found higher compared to the patients who comply with the diet(P < 0.001). In patients withany autoantibody-positive, disulphide/native thiol ratio was observed higher compared to the patients with autoantibody-negative(P < 0.05). It is found that there is a negative correlation between celiac autoantibodies, and native thiol, total thiol levels and native thiol/total thiol ratio, while a positive correlation is observed between disulphide, disulphide/native thiol and disulphide/total thiol *** This study is first in the literature which found that the patients with celiac disease the dynamic thiol/disulphide balance shifts through disulphide form compared to the control group.

Macro-and Microelement Contents of Fruiting Bodies of Wild-Edible Mushrooms Growing in the East Black Sea Region of Turkey

Eleven different wild-edible mushroom species growing in the Black Sea region of Turkey were analysed for their metal content. Specimens of mushrooms were gathered in Trabzon, Giresun and Ordu and analyzed for 31 minerals, four of which (Be, Sb, Te and Ti) were not detected. Whereas some minerals including Ag, As, Cd, La, Mo, Pb, Se, Y and Zr were detected in just a few mushroom species, another 18 minerals were found in all 11 species. All metal concentrations were expressed on a dry weight basis (d.w.). With regard to nutritionally important amounts of essential and trace minerals, the metal content (μg/g d.w.) of mushroom samples ranged from 21,800-39,800 for K, 2590-14,000 for P, 268-1600 for Ca, 561-1210 for Mg, 74-829 for Fe, 11.2-321 for Cu, 36.2-241 for Zn, 14.1-76.5 for Mn and 0.13-2.85 for Co. Small amounts of toxic metals such as As, Cd and Pb were found in all 11 mushroom species. L. laccata contained a large amount of As (145 μg/g d.w.). These results show that the investigated mushrooms can be a useful component for human diets because of their high content of many essential minerals and trace elements and low content of toxic metals.
