Analysis of Mad Honey (Grayanotoksin) Cases Admitted to Duzce University School of Medicine Emergency Department

Background: Mad honey is the type of honey made by bees that are nourished from the plants of Rhododendron (Rh.) family, and it contains grayanotoksin (GTX). The most significant types of Rh family, which contain GTX, are Rh. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cases which came to the emergency room because of GTX intoxication in detail in order to help diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and prognosis in daily emergency medicine practice. A total of 36 patients with the symptoms and diagnosis of intoxication after consuming mad honey, were included in the study. Ten healthy individuals who did not have a history of taking mad honey were included in the control group. The study is designed as a prospective case control study. The average GTX level of the group who ate mad honey (studygroup) was 7.88 ng/ml (min: 0.00/max: 30.47). At control group, GTX level was 0 ng/ml. There was no statistically significant relationship between the symptoms (dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, deterioration, angina) and blood GTX level in the study group. Also statistic value reflects relationship between kidney function tests, troponin and control troponin levels in case group. The patients who have absolute decrease in blood pressure and pulse should be questioned by emergency medicine doctors about consuming mad honey. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the relationship between symptoms and GTX poisoning.

Acute intoxication cases admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to describe the clinical and socio-demographic aspects of acute poisoning in 2010 in Duzce City, Northwest Anatolian Region of ***: Acute poisoning was due to the intentional ingestion of drugs in young and adult people(≥16), who were treated at the Emergency Service of Duzce University Medical Hospital, Turkey from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. In this retrospective and descriptive study, 95 patients were diagnosed with intoxications and 30 of them intentionally ingested drugs to commit suicide. Records of the patients diagnosed with intoxication were obtained from the Clinical Archive of the hospital. Their diagnoses were established according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Codes X60-X84 of this classification were used to classify self-infringed drug injuries and drug ***: In this series, 35(36.8%) patients were male and 60 patients(63.2%) female. The male/female ratio was 1.0/1.7. The mean age of the patients was 33.1±14.2 years; 17(17.9%) patients were below 20 years old and 9(9.5%) were older than 50 years. Of these patients, 29(30.5%) were single, 7(7.4%) divorced or separated, and 59(62.1%) married. Their mean time for admission to the emergency service after the incident was 208±180(15–660) minutes. The mean time for admission to the emergency service for patients with food intoxication after the incident was 142±160 minutes, for those with drug intoxication 173±161 minutes, for those with carbon monoxide(CO) intoxication 315±209 minutes, and for those with undefined intoxication 289±166 minutes(P=0.005). Most of the intoxication cases occurred in winter(41.1%, 39 of 95 patients). Admissions to the emergency service were most common in December and April(21 and 16 of 95 patients, respectively). Energy use, CO2 emission and foreign direct investment： Is there any inconsistence between causal relations？

In this study, the causal relations between inward foreign direct investment （FDI）-energy use per capita and inward FDI-CO2 emission per capita were analyzed and the inconsistency between the causal relations was investigated via bootstrap-corrected panel causality test and cross-correlation analysis. In this direction, data from 76 countries including the period of 1980-2009 was processed. No supportive evidence was found for changing causal relations to country group which was classified into income level. The findings indicated that while the pollution haven hypothesis was supported for Mozambique, United Arab Emirates and Oman, the pollution halo hypothesis was supported in the case of India, Iceland, Panama and Zambia. For other countries, energy use and CO2 emission were neutral to inward FDI flows in aggregated level. Furthermore, this study urged that increased （decreased） energy use due to the inward FD1 flows did not necessarily mean an increase （decrease） in pollution level, and vice versa. For policy purpose, FDI attractive policy should be regulated by taking into account this possibility.

Analysis of the forest fires in the Antalya region of Turkey using the Keetch–Byram drought index

We investigated the correlation of large fires（[300 ha） from 1992 to 2013 within the borders of the Antalya Regional Directorate of Forestry using the Keetch–Byram drought index（KBDI）. Daily KBDI values were calculated for each year, and values for the period before the year 2000 differed significantly from those after2000. After 2000（large fires occurred in 2004, 2006, 2007,2008, 2010, and 2013）, when KBDI values increased, the KBDI, but not the number of fires, was inversely correlated with the natural log of the burned area（NLBA）. While there were both high and low KBDI values when the NLBA was small, only high KBDI values were associated with high NLBA values. Particularly for logarithmic values of 4 and higher, KBDI values increased in parallel with increases in NLBA values. On the basis of a Mann–Whitney U test done in addition to a Pearson correlation test, we found that when the burned areas were grouped according to small and large areas, the KBDI could be used to distinguish the two groups. Using a conditional probability analysis, we found that 4th, 5th and 6th class KBDI values may lead to large fires at the 60 % ***, the possibility of large fires greater than the median burned area in any given 6 years was found to be48 %. In addition, while the mean value of KBDI is 390.51 for the period from May to September for these 6 years, it is 359.93 for the other years. Consequently, the area burned also increased as the KBDI classes（Class 0： 0–99, Class 1：100–199, Class 2： 200–299, Class 3： 300–399, Class 4：400–499, Class 5： 500–599, Class 6： 600–699, and Class 7：700–800） increase.

An enhanced damage plasticity model for predicting the cyclic behavior of plain concrete under multiaxial loading conditions

The complex dielectric permit tivity (ε* =ε′-jε″ ) and ac conductivity (σac) of Au/SnO_(2)/n-Si(MOS) structures are studied using capacitance (C) and conductance (G(ω) ) measurements in a wide temperature range of 125-400 K for six different frequency *** is observed that the C and G(ω) values decrease with the increasing frequency,while they increase with the increasing *** observed nature of the C is due to the inability of the dipoles to orient in a rapidly varying electric *** experimental values of the dielectric constant ε′,dielectric loss ε",loss tangent tanδ and σac are found to be strong functions of frequency and *** values of the ε′ and ε″ are found to decrease with the increasing frequency and increase with the increasing *** σac is found to increase with the increasing frequency and *** energy (Ea),from the Arrhenius plot,is studied to discuss the conduction mechanism in a MOS structure.

Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura

AIM:To compare the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hpylon)infection in autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP)patients with that of nonthrombocytopenic controls, and to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment in H pylori(+) and H pylor(-)AITP patients. METHODS:The prevalence of gastric H pylori infection in 38 adult AITP patients(29 female and 9 male;median age 27 years;range 18-39 years)who consecutively admitted to our clinic was investagated. RESULTS:H pylori infection was found in 26 of 38 AITP patients(68.5%).H pylori infection was found in 15 of 23 control subjects(65.2%).The difference in H pylori infection between the 2 groups was not *** count of H pylori-positive AITP patients was significantly lower than that of H pylori-negative AITP patients(P<0.05). Thrombocyte recovery of H pylori-positive group was less than that of H pylori-negative group(P<0.05). CONCLUSION:H pylori infection should be considerecd in the treatment of AITP patients with H pylori infection.

Analysis of EST-SSRs in silver birch(Betula pendula Roth.)

Simple sequence repeats（SSRs） defined as sequence repeat units between 1 and 6 bp occur abundantly in both coding and non-coding regions in eukaryotic genomes and these repeats can affect gene expression. In this study, ESTs（expressed sequence tags） of Betula pendula（silver birch） were analyzed for in silico mining of ESTSSRs, protein annotation, open reading frames（ORFs）,designing primers, and identifying codon repetitions. In ***, the frequency of ESTs containing SSRs was 7.8 %with an average of 1SSR/4. 78 kb of EST sequences. A total of 188 SSRs was identified by using MISA software and dinucleotide SSR motifs（65.9 %） were found to be the most abundant type of repeat motif followed by tri-（27.1 %）,tetra-（4.8 %）, and penta-（2.2 %） motifs. Based on ORF analysis, 175 of 178 sequences were predicted as ORFs and the most frequent SSRs were detected in 50 UTR（58.43 %）,followed by in ORF（31.46 %） and in 30UTR（8.43 %）. 102 of 178 ESTs were annotated as ribosomal protein, transport protein, membrane protein, carrier protein, binding protein,and transferase protein. For a total of 102 SSRs（57.3 %）with significant matches, a set of 102 primers（100 %） with forward and reverse strands was designed by using Primer 3 software. Serine（Ser, 19.6 %） was predominant in putative encoded amino acids and most of amino acids showed nonpolar（35.3 %） nature. Our data provide resources for *** and can be useful for in silico comparative analyses of Betulaceae species, including SSR mining.
