Comparative Thermometery in Paediatric Age Group: Is the Non-Touch Infrared Thermometer (NTIT) Reading Comparable to Regular Mercury-in-Glass Thermometer (MIGT) Reading?

Background: Accurate temperature measurement is a critical step in evaluating health or disease especially in children and immmunocompromised subjects;inaccurate measurement may lead to improper diagnosis, wrong treatment or inappropriate intervention. Several methods of temperature measurements exist and comparing these gives room for choosing a near ideal method in terms of speed, safety and accuracy. The study aimed to compare the forehead non touch infra-red thermometer with the axilllary mercury-in-glass method of temperature measurement in the Paediatric age-group. Methods: Study was given ethical approval as part of a larger study. Four hundred and thirty seven children aged 1 to 24 months were studied at the well-baby/immunizationclinic of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital over a 6-months period. Both non-touch infrared and theregular mercury-in-glass thermometers were used to take the body temperatures. Data were analysed with SPSS version 21. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between the two methods of temperature measurements, while Bland-Altman method was used to test for level of agreement between them. Results: The mean age and SD was 5.81 ± 4.04 months. Pearson correlation showed a positive correlation between the axillary mercury-in-glass and forehead non-touch infra-red thermometry readings (r = 0.281, p o, Bland-Altman method revealed a good agreement between both methods of thermometry as 96% of the readings were within the limits of agreement. Mean difference was 0.09°C (95% confidence interval 0.05 - 0.13). Conclusion: Axillary mercury-in-glass thermometer and forehead non touch infra-red thermometers have a good agreement and can be used interchangeably.

DNA polymerase delta interacting protein 3 facilitates the activation and maintenance of DNA damage checkpoint in response to replication stress

Background:Replication stress response is crucial for the maintenance of a stable ***3(DNA polymerase delta interacting protein 3)was initially identified as one of the DNA polymeraseδ(Polδ)interacting proteins almost 20 years *** a variety of in vitro biochemical assays,we previously established that PoLDIP3 is a key regulator of the enzymatic activity of Polδ.However,the in vivo function of PoLDIP3 in DNA replication and DNA damage response has been ***:We first generated PoLDIP3 knockout(Ko)cells using the CRISPR/Cas9 *** then investigated its biological functions in vivo using a variety of biochemical and cell biology ***:We showed that although the PoLDIP3-Ko cells manifest no pronounced defect in global DNA synthesis under nonstress conditions,they are sensitive to a va-riety of replication fork ***,we found that PoLDIP3 plays a crucial role in the activation and maintenance of the DNA damage checkpoint in response to exogenous as well as endogenous replication ***:our results indicate that when the DNA replication fork is blocked,PoLDIP3 can be recruited to the stalled replication fork and functions to bridge the early DNA damage checkpoint response and the later replication fork repair/restart.

Seasonal variation for the antidiabetic activity of Loranthus micranthus methanol extract

objective:To determine the season in which the Eastern Nigeria mistletoe,Loranthus micranthus,parasitic on Persea americana possesses optimum antidiabetic activity and to determine the seasonal variation in the ***:The antidiabetic activities of the aqueous methanol extracts of the leaves of Eastern Nigeria mistletoe,Loranthus micranthus, harvested in two seasons of the year,the onset of rainy season(April) and the peak of rainy season(July) were *** tests were carried out on six(6) groups(A-F) of alloxaninduced diabetic *** A and B received 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the April sample extracts respectively while groups C and D received same doses of the July sample extracts. Group E and F which were the positive and negative controls received 10 mg/kg of glibenclamide and 2 ml/kg of 3%tween 20 *** blood glucose levels of the animals were monitored hourly with a glucometer for six *** phytochemical analysis of the plant extracts were also carried out by standard ***:The results showed that group A and B exhibited significant(Pon in the fasting blood sugar(FBS) level of the animals(38.9%and 39.2%respectively) with maximum reduction observed at the 5th and 6th hour respectively compared to glibenclamide(71.3%).Group C showed no significant (P>0.05) FBS reduction(15.9%) while group D exhibited highly significant(Pon (47.5%) with the maximum reduction occurring after 6 *** phytochemical analysis of the crude methanol extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates,glycosides,saponins, tannins,flavonoids,steroids,terpenoids,acidic compounds,resins and *** were present in different proportions in both ***:This study shows that there is a seasonal, dose-dependent variation in the chemical composition viz-a-viz the antidiabetic activity of the plant under *** activity is highest at the peak of the rainy season.

Some controversy surrounds the postoperative feeding regimen utilized in patients who undergo *** in practices during the perioperative period exists including the type of nutrition started,the delivery route,and its *** nutrition is essential for this patient population as these patients often present with weight loss and have altered eating patterns after surgery,which can affect their ability to regain or maintain *** of feeding after an esophagectomy include total parenteral nutrition,nasoduodenal/nasojejunal tube feeding,jejunostomy tube feeding,and oral *** evidence suggests that early oral feeding is associated with shorter LoS,faster return of bowel function,and improved quality of *** recovery pathways after surgery pathways after esophagectomy with a component of early oral feeding also seem to be safe,feasible,and cost-effective,albeit with limited ***,data on anastomotic leaks is mixed,and some studies suggest that the incidence of leaks may be higher with early oral *** risk of anastomotic leak with early feeding may be heavily modulated by surgical *** definitive data is currently available to definitively answer this question,and further studies should look at how these early feeding regimens vary by surgical *** review aims to discuss the existing literature on the optimal route and timing of feeding after esophagectomy.

The epidemic of the Ebola virus infection in West Africa in 2014 has become a worldwide *** to the nature of the disease,which has an extremely high mortality potential,this outbreak has received much attention from researchers and public health *** article entitled“Need of surveillance response systems to combat Ebola outbreaks and other emerging infectious diseases in African countries,”published in the journal Infectious Diseases of Poverty in August 2014,concluded that a good surveillance system to monitor disease transmission dynamics is essential and needs to be implemented to combat the *** regarding the limitation of the passive surveillance system have been raised by Professor Viroj Wiwanitkit,who emphasizes the need for an active disease detection system such as mass screening in this letter to *** different function between passive and active surveillance system in combating the disease outbreak has been agreed upon by ernest Tambo et *** have also been discussions between Wiwanitkit and Tambo et *** the following issues:(i)the extreme resource limitations in outbreak areas,(ii)new technology to improve the available *** recommendations echoed in this letter to editor by Wiwanitkit,who outlined the research priorities on the development of appropriate combined disease monitoring systems and good policy to allocate available tools and technology in resource-limited settings for epidemic *** journal’s editor,Professor Xiao-Nong Zhou,has therefore collated all parts of these discussions between authors in this letter to editor paper,in order to further promote research on a combined active and passive system to combat the present extending Ebola outbreak.

Temperature Measurements in Neonates: Assessing the Agreement of Two Methods

Background: Neonatal temperature response during illness is unpredictable. Whereas accurate temperature measurement is an important diagnostic step in Neonatal practice. Abnormalties in temperature pattern may be a pointer to a sinister condition especially in neonates, whose thermoregulatory mechanism is immature. There are several methods of temperature measurements and the search for a suitable thermometry method in neonates continues. This study compared the forehead non touch infra-red thermometer (NTIT) with the axilllary mercury-in-glass (MIGT) method of temperature measurement in neonates. Method: Four hundred babies aged 1 to 28 days were recruited from the immunization clinic of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital between August 2016 and May 2017. Temperatures were taken using both NTIT and MIGT in the standard way and recorded.?Result: The mean age and SD was 5.10 ± 4.28?days. Pearson correlation showed a positive correlation between the Axillary Mercury-in-Glass and Forehead Non-Touch Infra-red thermometry readings (r?=?0.426, p??0.001). Bland-Altman method revealed a good agreement between both methods of thermometry as 95.5% of the readings were within the limits of agreement. Conclusion: Axillary Mercury-in-Glass thermometer and Forehead Non touch Infra-red thermometers have a good agreement and can be used interchangeably in neonates.
