Urban development and industrialization impacts on semiaquatic bugs diversity: A case study in eastern Amazonian streams

Landscape changes have caused the decline of biodiversity and affected the integrity of aquatic *** this study,we assessed the influence of industrialization associated with urban development on aquatic environments and the biodiversity of semiaquatic bugs(Gerromorpha)at different scales(water quality,habitat,and landscape).Using the simple buffer method,we evaluated nine streams assessing water quality variables,habitat structure,and linear features(radius¼300 m,length¼600 m)for the percentage of land use and land *** results found that species composition of Gerromorpha was mainly affected by primary forest cover,habitat integrity,leaves substrate,and water temperature(29%explanation),and the species richness was mostly influenced by the habitat integrity index(HII)and phosphorus *** model that best explained the variation in species richness showed a positive relationship with phosphorus concentrations and HII(43%variation).Therefore,our results show that those human activities are the main factors altering aquatic biodiversity from local to regional ***,the retention of riparian forests–even in urban and industrialized areas–can maintain the diversity of semiaquatic insect species by providing suitable environments for the habitat,feeding,and reproductive requirements of these aquatic ***,our results also show that the management of riparian vegetation in urban areas and industrial complexes promotes aquatic biodiversity conservation in regions under development in the Amazon.

Auriculotherapy in primary health care: A large-scale educational experience in Brazil

Auriculotherapy consists of physical stimuli applied to the outer ear and is commonly associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The authors present and discuss the development of a course that offers a semi-on-site auriculotherapy course for Brazilian primary health care (PHC) professionals. The course was funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and developed at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in 2015 by a team of experts in auriculotherapy. It consisted of 75 h of distance learning (five sequential modules) and 5 h of on-site learning. The modules included the following items:(1) introduction to integrative practices;(2) ear reflexology;(3) introduction to TCM;(4) biomedical view of auriculotherapy;and (5) auriculotherapy in PHC. The teaching material in eluded a workbook for each module, 14 video lectures and an interactive ear(on line resource) to study location and application to the main auricular points. The on-site lectures follow a structured script of ear palpation techniques, auricular seed insertion practice and clinical case discussions, under the supervision of trained instructors. The course was offered in 2016 and 2017 and on-site lectures took place in 25 cities, covering all Brazilian regions, in coordination with municipal or state boards of health. A total of 4273 health professionals concluded the training and their evaluation of the course was highly positive. The Brazilian experience of large-scale training shows the potential to disseminate auriculotherapy in the context of PHC, given that its practice is fast, easy to learn, safe, effective for different health problems and well accepted by the patients.

Transition metal sulfide(TMS)anodes exhibit the characteristics of phase stability and high capacity for lithium/sodium-ion batteries(LIBs/SIBs).However,the TMS anodes often suffer from poor electronic conductivity,low ionic diffusion and large volume expansion during Li/Na-ion intercalation significantly impairing the Li/Na-storage ***,a long chain heterostructure composed of the Co_(9)S_(8) and SnS are first reported,which can generate rich phase interfaces,and small crystal *** unique structure can facilitate the properties of reactivity,conductivity and ionic *** addition,the heterostructure surface is modified by the N-doped carbon(N-DC@(CoSn)S),successfully improving the structural *** synergistic effects of Co_(9)S_(8)/SnS heterostructure and coated carbon layer effectively increase the capacity and cycling *** N-DC@(CoSn)S anode delivers enhanced high specific capacities of 820.6 mAh·g^(−1) at 1.0 A·g^(–1) after 500 cycles for LIBs and 339.2 mAh·g^(–1)at 0.5 A·g^(–1) after 1000 cycles for SIBs,*** work is expected to provide a material design idea for preparing LIBs/SIBs with high capacity and long cycling life.

Tako-Tsubo Cardiomyopathy—The Role of Physical and Emotional Stressors:Two Case Report

Introduction: Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy describes a form of acute and reversible left ventricular dysfunction with a clinical presentation, ECG and cardiac biomarkers that makes it indistinguishable from acute coronary syndrome. Case Presentation: The authors present two cases of tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy in postmenopausal women, the first case following an emotional stressful event and a second case following a blood transfusion and probably associated with intravenous catecholamine perfusion. Both had unobstructed coronary arteries and regional wall-motion abnormalities typical of this syndrome. Conclusions: Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy is a condition often misdiagnosed. A clinical presentation suggestive of acute coronary syndrome in a postmenopausal woman without history of coronary disease and in whom a precipitating stressful event can be found should lead the physician to suspect the diagnosis of tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. This syndrome associated with blood transfusion has rarely been described.

A New Approach for Assessing the Drought Risk Management Capacity at the Municipal Level in Brazil

Long-term drought has occurred in all regions of Brazil, and its effects have been more intense in recent decades. Poor management of drought can exacerbate significant consequences, severely compromising water, food, energy, economic security, natural systems, and high fire risk that can affect biomes. It also slowly and indirectly affects the society living on vulnerable geographic space. This article discusses a methodology for assessing the drought risk management capacity at the municipal level in Brazil, and this new approach is statistically based using environmental data provided by the municipalities, from observational networks to data banks and remotely sensed data. It presents a method to indicate the steps of priority actions for the phases of drought management. It also characterized the long-term drought in Brazil (hydrological drought) between 1982 and 2022. The proposed approach provides a better understanding and the use of various drought indices to develop the most appropriate action steps for mitigation and adaptation. The final goal is to increase the resilience for those affected by drought. The work was developed based on the actions defined by the Brazilian Federal Government (Preparation, Prevention, Mitigation, Response, Recovery, and Restoration). This aims to improve the management of risk and disaster typified as drought in Brazil and to contribute with scientific knowledge to legislators regarding adaptation and resilience policies to drought extremes in parts of the country. At the end, we expect to highlight to managers and decision-makers the critical points in the government’s proactive and reactive actions to drought that need to be better managed.

Social responsibility requires a set of duties and obligations, whether individuals or firms in relation to society and to the communities in which the organization is operating. The tradition of social intervention in Portugal dates from the fifteenth century and the founding of Mercy. However, environmental issues have never been felt in a sensitive position in responsible business, given the weakness of industrial development which lasted until the 60＇s. In Brazil, the corporate social responsibility is still particularly a big challenge, since the actions of social responsibility have not contributed effectively to improve the living conditions of society and the transformation of existing social reality. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the perspective of environmental sustainability that underpins the more general concept of social responsibility and, through the case study Caixa Geral de Dep6sitos, assess the strengths and weaknesses of the development of measures of social responsibility in this area in Portugal, and present the case of the company Vale, carrying out business in Brazil

Antiulcerogenic Effect of Brazilian Propolis Formulation in Mice

Propolis is a natural resin used around the world to treatment of several diseases. We evaluated the effect of Brazilian propolis (P1) in guinea pig isolated trachea in vitro contracted with hista-mine, in paw oedema induced by histamine in mice and anti-ulcerogenic effect of propolis formulation in mice. We used a P1 extract from South of Brazil to produce a formulation containing sodium bicarbonate and propolis dry extract (2%). In the guinea pig trachea Brazilian propolis extract (10 μg/mL) produced a non-significant inhibition in the cumulative response curve for histamine. However, the dose of 100 μg/mL shown had a significant inhibitory effect on the contraction induced by histamine (51% ± 5%). In the mouse paw oedema induced by intraplantar injection of histamine (50 μg/paw), the results showed that the treatment of the mice with P1 (10 or 100 mg/Kg (p.o) or 1 or 10 mg/Kg (i.p)), 0.5 h beforehand, significantly inhibited the paw oedema with maximal inhibition (MI) of 25% or 42% by p.o. route or 22% or 37% by i.p. route, respectively. Finally we have pre-treated mice with P1 formulation (20 mg/Kg or 40 mg/Kg, p.o, one time) or vehicle (powder) in animals submitted to diclofenac-induced ulcer, after 8 h P1 formulation inhibited of 43% or 83% of ulcers scores, respectively. Results showed that P1 formulation inhibited the ulcerogenic effect induced by diclofenac. Results suggested also, at least in part, the antiulcerogenic effect of formulation containing standardized extract of propolis can be due to the antagonistic action on the histaminergic system.

Liver Histology after Chronic Use of Alcohol and Exercise Training in Rats

Objectives： To investigate the effects of physical training on the liver morphology and morphometry after chronic use of alcohol in rats. Methods： Twenty-four Wistar rats were housed in cages with controlled environment and randomly divided into four groups according to treatment received. In the initial treatment, alcohol was administered to SA （sedentary alcohol） and EA （exercise alcohol） groups. After four weeks, physical training program was held on a treadmill with EA and EC （exercise control） groups. Area, perimeter, maximum and minimum diameter and form factor of nucleus and cytoplasm of hepatocytes were analyzed. Key findings： Micro-vesicular fatty degeneration, predominantly pericentrolobular, of mild to moderate intensity, was found especially in animals treated with alcohol. EC group showed nucleus area greater than the nucleus area of EA and SA groups. The form factor was lower in the EC group than in the EA group. EA group showed maximum cytoplasm diameter is smaller than in SC （sedentary control） group. Conclusions： Physical training for two weeks was not enough to suppress histopathologic changes in the liver caused by chronic use of alcohol in rats. Chronic use of alcohol seems to have minimized the beneficial effect of physical training in the nucleus area of hepatocytes.

The Amazon basin has experienced an extreme drought that started in the austral summer of 2022-23 and extends into 2024. This drought started earlier than other previous droughts. Although some rain fell during the austral summer, totals remained below average. Higher temperatures during austral winter and spring 2023, which affected most of Central South America, then aggravated drought conditions. This coincided with an intense El Niño and abnormally warm tropical North Atlantic Ocean temperatures since mid-2023. Decreased rainfall across the Amazon basin, negative anomalies in evapotranspiration (derived from latent heat) and soil moisture indicators, as well as increased temperatures during the dry-to-wet transition season, September-October-November (SON) 2023, combined to delay the onset of the wet season in the hydrological year 2023-24 by nearly two months and caused it to be uncharacteristically weak. SON 2023 registered a precipitation deficit of the order of 50 to 100 mm/month, and temperatures +3˚C higher than usual in Amazonia, leading to reduced evapotranspiration and soil moisture indicators. These processes, in turn, determined an exceptionally late onset and a lengthening of the dry season, affecting the 2023-2024 hydrological year. These changes were aggravated by a heat wave from June to December 2023. Drought-heat compound events and their consequences are the most critical natural threats to society. River levels reached record lows, or dried up completely, affecting Amazonian ecosystems. Increased risk of wildfires is another concern exacerbated by these conditions.

Quali-Quantitative Analysis of Brazilian Environmental Licensing of Hydropower Plants

The use of the extraordinary hydroelectric potential of the Amazon Basin originated an increase in the offer of renewable energy in Brazil, which, in its turn, leads to conflicts and a lack of consensus among different players owing to the potential negative impacts related to the construction and operation of large hydroelectric power plants in relatively well preserved areas. In this context, environmental licensing is one of the national environmental policy’s main instruments for making decisions regarding the use of the hydroelectric potential, especially the rivers of the Amazon Basin. Nevertheless, this significant instrument has its limitations and requires adjustments in order to better aid the decision making process regarding the use of water resources and land with the goal of increasing the offer of electric energy.
