Enhancing the efficiency of cabin heaters in emergency shelters after earthquakes through an optimized fuzzy controller

In just one and half minutes,more than fifty thousand died due to the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that struck Turkey’s southeast on February 6,2023;thousands of families who barely escaped struggled to survive in the freezing weather.A warm shelter was the most basic requirement of these *** buildings are a rapid and easy solution to this ***,there is a need for a more effective and safe heating option than a wood fire for these *** this study,cabin heaters,which allow truck drivers to warm up when they park their vehicles to sleep,are specially optimized for emergency shelters after an *** optimized fuzzy controller was developed to use in such buildings,which allows an air–fuel ratio in the combustion chamber of the cabin heater to be controlled adaptively based on system dynamics to get lower carbon emissions and fuel *** TRNSYS software was used to establish the transient simulation model of a cabin heater with a capacity of 4 kW for a typical 21 m^(2) shelter building in Turkey’s cold *** developed fuzzy controller carried out the heating process of this shelter from the 15th of November to the 15th of *** of using expert knowledge,the Gray Wolf Optimization(GWO)method was applied to optimize the fuzzy controller parameters developed for the cabin *** the optimized fuzzy controller,the fuel consumption at the end of the heating season was reduced by an average of 0.2 L/h,and the cabin heater’s efficiency increased by more than 13%.Our simulation results show that the intelligent controller we developed could improve diesel fuel combustion efficiency by up to 85%.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection for premalignant lesions and noninvasive early gastrointestinal cancers

AIM: To investigate the indication, feasibility, safety, and clinical utility of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in the management of various gastrointestinal pathologies. METHODS: The medical records of 60 consecutive patients (34 female, 26 male) who underwent ESD at the gastroenterology department of Kocaeli University from 2006-2010 were examined. Patients selected for ESDhad premalignant lesions or non-invasive early cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and had endoscopic and histological diagnoses. Early cancers were considered to be confined to the submucosa, with no lymph node involvement by means of computed tomography and endosonography. RESULTS: Sixty ESD procedures were performed. The indications were epithelial lesions (n = 39) (33/39 adenoma with high grade dysplasia, 6/39 adenoma with low grade dysplasia), neuroendocrine tumor (n = 7), cancer (n = 7) (5/7 early colorectal cancer, 2/7 early gastric cancer), granular cell tumor (n = 3), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (n = 2), and leiomyoma (n = 2). En bloc and piecemeal resection rates were 91.6% (55/60) and 8.3% (5/60), respectively. Complete and incomplete resection rates were 96.6% (58/60) and 3.3% (2/60), respectively. Complications were major bleeding [n = 3 (5%)] and perforations [n = 5 (8.3%)] (4 colon, 1 stomach). Two patients with colonic perforations and two patients with submucosal lymphatic and microvasculature invasion (1 gastric carcinoid tumor, 1 colonic adenocarcinoma) were referred to surgery. During a mean follow-up of 12 mo, 1 patient with adenoma with high grade dysplasia underwent a second ESD procedure to resect a local recurrence. CONCLUSION: ESD is a feasible and safe method for treatment of premalignant lesions and early malignant gastrointestinal epithelial and subepithelial lesions. Successful en bloc and complete resection of lesions yield high cure rates with low recurrence.

Palliation of malignant esophageal obstruction and fistulas with self expandable metallic stents

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of self expandable metallic stents (SEMS) in patients with malignant esophageal obstruction and fistulas. METHODS: SEMS were implanted in the presence of fluoroscopic guidance in patients suffering from advanced and non-resectable esophageal, cardiac and invasive lung cancer between 2002 and 2009. All procedures were performed under conscious sedation. All patients had esophagus obstruction and/or fistula. In all patients who required reintervention, recurrence of dysphagia, hemorrhage, and fistula formation were indications for further endoscopy. Patients' files were scanned retrospectively and the obtained data were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 for Windows. The χ 2 test was used for categorical data and was analysis of variance for noncategorical data. Patients' long-term survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: Stents were successfully implanted in 90 patients using fluoroscopic guidance. Reasons for stent implantation in these patients were esophageal stricture (77/90, 85.5%), external pressure (8/90, 8.8%) and tracheo-esophageal fistula (5/90, 5.5%). Dysphagia scores (mean ± SD) were 3.37 ± 0.52 before and 0.90 ± 0.43 after stent implantation (P = 0.002). Intermittent, nonmassive hemorrhage due to the erosion caused by the distal end of the stent in the stomach occurred in only one patient who received implementation at cardioesophageal junction. Mean survival following stenting was 134.14 d (95% confidence interval: 94.06-174.21).CONCLUSION: SEMS placement is safe and effective in the palliation of dysphagia in selected patients with malignant esophageal strictures.

Photonic crystal structures:Beam deflector and beam router

We investigate the optical characteristic,transverse magnetic（TM） and transverse electric（TE） band of twodimensional（2 D） square lattice photonic crystal structure,which is composed of cylindrical air regions positioned at the corners of the square shaped dielectric *** obtain the wide photonic bandwidths between TM1–TM2 and TM3–TM4 *** to the results,we demonstrate the band gaps close to each other in the TM and TE frequencies for proposed *** resulting photonic gaps are formed to be about 8% at the higher frequencies of TE modes（TE4–TE5）and TM modes（TM7–TM8 and TM9–TM10）.In addition,we examine isotropically generated structures for light guiding properties and observe that the light is directed in a particular route without using any *** also investigate the self-collimation effect with the designed *** obtained results reveal the influences of the radius of cylindrical air holes and the angle between these air holes on absolute and partial photonic band ***,we observe the TM and TE band gaps that *** is thought that the obtained band overlap will provide an easy way to produce the photonic crystals in practical applications like photonic insensitive *** is also believed that these results can provide the photonic crystal structures to work as a beam deflecting and beam router in integrated optical circuit applications.

A New Metaheuristic Approach to Solving Benchmark Problems: Hybrid Salp Swarm Jaya Algorithm

Metaheuristic algorithms are one of the methods used to solve optimization problems and find global or close to optimal solutions at a reasonable computational *** with other types of algorithms,in metaheuristic algorithms,one of the methods used to improve performance and achieve results closer to the target result is the hybridization of *** this study,a hybrid algorithm(HSSJAYA)consisting of salp swarm algorithm(SSA)and jaya algorithm(JAYA)is *** speed of achieving the global optimum of SSA,its simplicity,easy hybridization and JAYA’s success in achieving the best solution have given us the idea of creating a powerful hybrid algorithm from these two *** hybrid algorithm is based on SSA’s leader and follower salp system and JAYA’s best and worst solution *** works according to the best and worst food source *** this way,it is thought that the leader-follower salps will find the best solution to reach the food *** hybrid algorithm has been tested in 14 unimodal and 21 multimodal benchmark *** results were compared with SSA,JAYA,cuckoo search algorithm(CS),firefly algorithm(FFA)and genetic algorithm(GA).As a result,a hybrid algorithm that provided results closer to the desired fitness value in benchmark functions was *** addition,these results were statistically compared using wilcoxon rank sum test with other *** to the statistical results obtained from the results of the benchmark functions,it was determined that HSSJAYA creates a statistically significant difference in most of the problems compared to other algorithms.

Illumination of parameter contributions on uneven break： phenomenon in underground stoping mines

One of the most serious conundrum facing the stope production in underground metalliferous mining is uneven break （UB： unplanned dilution and ore-loss）. Although the UB has a huge economic fallout to the entire mining process, it is practically unavoidable due to the complex causing mechanism. In this study, the contribution of ten major UB causative parameters ha,; been scrutinised based on a published UB predicting artificial neuron network （ANN） model to put UB under the engineering management. Two typical ANN sensitivity analysis methods, i.e., connection weight algorithm （CWA） and profile method （PM） have been applied. As a result of CWA and PM applications, adjusted Qrate （AQ） revealed as the most influential parameter to UB with contribution of 22,40% in CWA and 20,48% in PM respectively. The findings of this study can be used as an important reference in stope design, production, and reconciliation stages on underground stoping mine.

Magnesium(Mg)stands out in temporary biomaterial applications due to its biocompatibility,biodegradability,and low Young’s ***,controlling its corrosion through next-generation polymer-based functional coatings is crucial due to the rapid degradation behavior of *** this study,the function of 2D lamellar Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)(MXene)in Hydroxyapatite(HA)and Halloysite nanotube(HNT)hybrid coatings in biodegradable poly-(lactic acid)(PLA)was *** morphological and structural characterizations of the coatings on Mg were revealed through HRTEM,XPS,SEM-EDX,XRD,FTIR,and contact angle analyses/*** in vitro corrosion tests(OCP,PDS,and EIS-Nyquist)were conducted for evaluate corrosion resistance under simulated body fluid(SBF)*** bioactivity of the coatings in SBF have been revealed in accordance with the ISO 23,317 ***,antibacterial disk diffusion tests were conducted to investigate the functional effect of MXene in *** has been determined that the presence of MXene in the coating increased not only surface wettability(131°,85°,77°,and 74°for uncoated,pH,PHH,and PHH/MXene coatings,respectively)but also increased corrosion resistance(1857.850,42.357,1.593,and 0.085×10^(-6),A/cm^(2) for uncoated,pH,PHH,and PHH/MXene coatings,respectively).It has been proven that the in vitro bioactivity of PLA-HA coatings is further enhanced by adding HNT and MXene,along with SEM morphologies after ***,2D lamellar MXene-filled coating exhibits antibacterial behavior against both *** and *** bacteria.

Anatomic and functional results of idiopathic macular epiretinal membrane surgery

AIM: To assess the impact of macular surgery on the functional and anatomic outcomes in patients with grade 2 epiretinal membrane(ERM), and the effect of internal limiting membrane(ILM) peeling on visual acuity and to analyze the long-term effect of pars plana vitrectomy(PPV) on intraocular pressure(IOP).METHODS: Pseudophakic eyes(62 eyes) diagnosed as idiopathic grade 2 ERM with at least 6 mo postoperative follow-up were included in this retrospective study. The fellow eye was nonvitrectomized. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1(29 eyes) treated with ERM and ILM peeling and group 2(33 eyes) with only ERM peeling. Preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), slit-lamp, and a dilated fundus examination was performed. IOP was measured with Goldman applanation tonometer before, day 1 and first week and each visit after surgery. The incidence of significant IOP elevation was compared between vitrectomized eyes and nonvitrectomized fellow ***: Visual improvement was statistically significant and similar in both groups(P=0.008 in group 1, P=0.002 in group 2, P=0.09 inter-group). The amount of decrease in central macular thickness was statistically significant and similar in both groups(P=0.005 group 1, P=0.008 group 2, P=0.37 intergroup). At the final follow-up(14.1±9.6 mo) the incidence of significant IOP elevation was 4% in vitrectomized eyes(three eyes) and 3%(two eyes) in the nonvitrectomized fellow eyes(P=0.12). Four eyes(12.1%) had recurrent ERM after a mean follow-up of 8.6±1.1 mo in group 2, there was no recurrence in group 1(P=0.01).CONCLUSION: Recurrence of ERM may be decreased by ILM peeling during ERM surgery. However, it seems that ILM peeling do not affect the functional outcome and 23-gauge PPV alone do not have a significant effect on IOP.
